34 A Check

　　　　A poor peasant went into a restaurant in London for some coffee and a cake．When he received the check，he was very surprised.

〝What's this?"　he asked the waiter. 〝Ten pounds for coffee and a cake? There must be something wrong."

〝No," answered the waiter.

　　　 〝Just for coffee and a cake？There are some other things in it，〞 explained the waiter.〝For instance，do you see these works of art on the wall？And all the plates and bowls are the finest in the world．These desks and chairs are the most beautiful and nicest all over the country. In short，you are paying not Just for what you ate，but for all these things around you．〞

　The peasant paid the check slowly.〝Now let me have another cup of coffee and a cake," he told the waiter.〝And remember the other things I've paid for."
