“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a 1   way that people in the United States meet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very  2   question. It’s a question that often 3  have an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “  4 ”, even though the person’s friend isn’t fine, 5   “How are you?” isn’t really a question, and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” and “ 6 ”.

Sometimes, people also don’t say just what they 7 . For example, when someone asks, “Do you agree?” the other person might be thinking, “No, I don’t agree. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk  14 , but it isn’t very polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s 15 .

Most people in the U.S. speak only one language, English. They do not learn to speak a second language. High schools teach languages, but very few students learn to speak well. Why don’t Americans speak other languages?

First, most Americans never travel to other countries. The United States is a very large country. Americans can travel a long way and not leave the United States. They do not need to learn a second language.

Second, one of the countries next to the United States is Canada. Most people in Canada speak English. Some Americans live near Canada. They travel there often. But they do not have to learn a new language.

Third, many people in other parts of the world speak English. If Americans travel to other countries, they can speak English there, too.

Some Americans think that it is a mistake to speak only English. They believe it is very important to learn a second language. Maybe someday other Americans will agree. Then more people will speak a second language in the United States.

It’s important to learn how we can protect the environment. Here are 5R rules for us.

Reduce(减少) If you want to reduce waste, you should use things more cleverly. A large number of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly, soon we would not have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to reduce the amount(数量) of waste we produce.

Reuse You should always think of reusing things before throwing them out. For example, give the clothes you do not use or the ones that are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

Recycle Bottles, cans(罐头) and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so we save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat and melted. The metal can be used to make new coke cans.

Recover When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐烂的) ones. You have two choices: one is to throw the apples away; the second is to throw the rotten ones and keep the good ones. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

Repair If one of the legs of your table is broken, you should repair it. If you want to buy something newer and better, it is better for you to sell the old thing, or give it to people who can use it after repairing it.

Learn the rules to protect our environment. Let’s try our best to make the earth cleaner and more beautiful.

6.The “Reduce” rule mainly asks us ______.

A.to use things more cleverly      B.to cut down lots of trees

C.to use a lot of paper         D.to throw away your old clothes

7.What should you think of before you throw things out?

c.smash them flat

d.send them to a factory

  A.a, b, c, d     B.a, d, c, b C.b, d, c, a D.c, a, b, d

9.The “Recover” rule mainly asks us________.

Friends are very important in people’s lives. No one can live alone in the world without friends. I think it’s easy to make friends with other people and build a friendship(友谊) between each other. However, it is not easy to get true friendship, I think.

So what is true friendship? In my opinion, true friendship includes(包括):

First of all, true friendship must treat their friends loyally(忠诚地) and help each other. In other words, you must not take advantage of (利用) your friends, and you mustn’t cheat(欺骗) them. For example, some unfriendly people make friends in order to cheat money and feelings, or get a certain secret and so on. I don’t think these are true friendship.

Second, true friends must try their best to help each other. For example, if a friend is indeed in need of money to escape from some trouble, true friends might lend it and help him or her.

Third, friends must share their happiness and sadness. One of the greatest men once said, “If you tell your happiness to your friend, you will get double happiness. If you tell your sadness to your friend, you will get half.”

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

11.Are friends very important in people’s lives?

12.Is it easy or difficult to get true friendship?

13.Why do some unfriendly people make friends?

14.What should true friends do if a friend is indeed in need of money?

15.What is true friendship?

A possible version:

Dear Peter,

I have been here for half a year. I’d like to tell you something about Ningbo and London.

In our country cars are driven on the left side of the road, but here on the right side. Many people go to work by car in London, while most people in Ningbo go to work by bus or by bike. The weather in Ningbo is better than ours. It is fine most of the time. The workers work five days a week just as those in London. Students here work hard at their lessons and a lot of people can speak English. It’s a pity that students in our country don’t make full use of their time and few know Chinese.

Please write to me soon.

Yours,
