Computers can help many workers. They can also help thieves. There was a thief who worked in a bank in the USA. He paid for everything he needed by writing a check. Then he told the computer not to take any money from his account for the checks he wrote. The bank’s computer did what he said. And it did not take any money from his bank account. One day the computer broke down. People had to do the computer’s work. They soon found out what was happening.

Another thief who worked for a bank saw people filling in deposit forms(存款单). Many of these people did not know their account numbers, so they wrote only their names on the forms. They left the place empty for their account numbers. The thief wrote his own account numbers in the place. When the computer read these forms it looked only at the account numbers. It did not look at the customers’ names. It paid the money on these deposit forms into the thief’s account.

Then there was a bank worker who told the bank computer to take ten cents off every customer’s account each month and put it into his own account. For a long time the bank’s customers did not notice that they were losing ten cents every months. But then someone did notice and told the bank. That was the end of that little game!

No one really knows how much computer crime is costing the banks, but some people believe it is millions of dollars a year.

It’s sometimes reported that strange objects have been seen high up in the sky. These unidentified flying objects (UFOs不明飞行物) have made a lot of people interested. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe, some have been explained in scientific ways, and others have never been explained.

It’s not easy to decide whether a report is true or not. One report of UFOs came from a British plane on its way from New York to London in 1954. The British plane was flying over an island at 19,000 feet when the captain noticed that something was on their left and a little lower than their plane. It’s about five miles away.

“It was not one object but several,” the captain said. “We saw one large and six smaller objects. I sent out a radio to report about them and I received the answer that the other planes were coming out to meet us. Before the planes arrived, the smaller objects entered the big object. The big object then became smaller and moved away fast.”

Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have been strongly asked to break the habits which you might have. Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions:

1. Do you move your lips when reading silently?

2. Do you point to words with your finger as you read?

3. Do you move your head from side to side as you read?

4. Do you read one word at a time?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once to break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you will not have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin(下巴) in one hand, and hold your head still. If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance(一瞥) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.

36. You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading so as to ______.

It looks like a mobile phone, but the service is much cheaper .It acts like a mobile phone, but only in your own cite .Beyond the city walls, it’s useless.

“Little Smart”, also called “xiaolingtong” has always been compared to the mobile phone. But in fact it is more like one of those cordless phones(无线电话) used around the home. The only difference is that this one reaches much further than from the bathroom to the living room. It can travel across a whole city.

Cheap costs are the main reason for the success of Little Smart. It costs 25 yuan a month for the line and about 0.1 yuan per minute to use. A mobile phone, on the other hand, can cost four or five times as much. What’s more, unlike mobile phones, there’s no fee for incoming calls. So these low charges have attracted many users.

But, Little Smart is not really that smart. Users often complain about its bad voice quality(质量). And there are not as many questions to pick up its signals as there are for mobile. “I couldn’t receive a photo call if I was on a bus,” said Li Ping, a user in Hang Zhou. “It worked fine when I stood still, but there were breaks in signal when I was moving.”

Scientists are trying to make Little Smart more easy to use. Messaging and Internet even has a colour screen.

One day, when my mother came home from work, she realized that she had lost her new necklace which she had bought the day before. She was very worried. She wondered where she had been just then. She thought that perhaps the man who lived next door had stolen her necklace. We planned to call the police at once. Just then, someone was knocking at the door. It was the young man, our new neighbour. I was shocked that my mother’s necklace was in his hand. He told us that he found it at the doorway. And he thought it must be my mother’s. so he came to return it.

Yes, that’s true. It is the necklace my mother lost. My mother was very thankful. She told our new neighbour that we could be good friends later.
