For years, children in the industrial areas of Europe and America seldom left their smoky cities to see the beauties of the countryside. This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but because they were too far from the city to permit people to make a day trip between morning and nightfall.
In 1907, a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small amount of money. The idea was a success. A few years later the schoolhouse was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. As a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Young Hostel.
Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other. When young people arrive at a hostel, they have only to show their card of membership in a hostel organization in their own country. This card will permit them to use the facilities of hostels all over the world for a very low price.
Often, at the evening meal, a group of boys and girls from different parts of the country or the world will happen to meet at the same hostel. They may put their food together and prepare a dinner with many kinds of dishes. Sometimes a program will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a question period. One can learn a lot of things about other places, just by meeting people who come from those places. For this reason, a few weeks spent “hostelling” can just as useful a part of one’s education as classes in school.

The hands, the eyes, and the brain work together to make human beings different from other animals. No other animals have all the three parts to work together. No animals can do what human beings can do. Humans can do many things and feel many things with the hand. The hand can hold onto things and make things because the thumb(拇指) works with the fingers. This fifth finger is strong. Most animals don’t have thumbs. The thumb can press against the other fingers. Without a thumb to press against the fingers, it is difficult to hold onto anything. The thumb and fingers can also fit the flat surface of a box and the curved surface of a pencil. We can feel that something is hot or cold, soft or hard, smooth or tough. The hand, with thumb and fingers, is one of the best tools we have. Most animals see a flat picture. Their eyes can only see how high and how wide something is. Some don’t see in color. Humans see one picture with both eyes working together. We can see how high and how wide something is. We can also see how far in front of or in back of something a thing is. The brain tells other parts of the body how to work. Some of the things the body does are automatic, that is we don’t have to think about them. For example, we don’t have to think to make our heart beat or our stomach work. The brain tells the eyes and hands how to make useful and beautiful things. That is how human beings become toolmakers and artists. That is how humans can have richer and better lives than other animals.
51. Human beings are different from other animals because _____.
A. human beings have the hands, the eyes, and the brains working all the time
B. other animals also have the hands, the eyes, and the brain
C. human beings work together with other animals

52. According to the passage, when you say you hold onto something, you mean _____.
A. you have it in your hand and keep it there by putting your fingers firmly round it
B. you have it in your arms and keep it there by putting your fingers firmly round it
C. you feel it with your hands
D. you press the fingers of your right hand against those of your left hand
53. The author tells us that no animals can do what humans can do. He gives several facts to support the idea. One of them is that _____.
A. most animals don’t see in color
B. the humans see a thing with both eyes working together
C. only humans can see how high and how wide a thing is
D. some animals can see only one picture
54. _____ is automatic.
A. Breathing B. Making tools
C. Driving a car D. Seeing a picture
55. People who make beautiful things are usually called _____.
A. toolmakers B. artists C. scientists D. drivers

People travel a lot with Bel Air because they know they will get what they want.
They want to go quickly and safely across the land, across the sea or across the world, and they know Bel Air will take them where they want to go. When they want to go, Bel Air flies all the newest and fastest planes to more towns and cities of the world tha any other airlines.
Do you want to go to Paris, Washington, Tokyo? Bel Air will take you there, at all times of the day or night, right through the week. But Bel Air flies not only to the biggest cities, also twice or three times a week to towns and cities in the very center of Asia, Africa and South Africa.
People fly with Bel Air because they know they will leave on time and arrive on time. They know that they will receive the best food and watch the vest films.
Bel Air is second to none.
