Jack and Betty Williams are going through some difficult times. They were both laid off from their jobs last month. As the days go by, they’re becoming more and more worried about their futures, since Jack hasn’t been able to find another job yet, and neither has Betty.
The layoffs weren’t a surprise to Jack and Betty. After all, Jack’s company hadn’t been doing very well for a long time, and neither had Betty’s. However, Jack had never expected both of them to be laid off at the same time, and Betty hadn’t either. Ever since they have been laid off, Jack and Betty have been trying to find new jobs. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been very successful, and he hasn’t either.
The main reason they’re having trouble finding work is that there simply aren’t many jobs available (有用的) right now. He can’t find anything in the wanted ads, and neither can she. She hasn’t heard about any jobs opening, and he hasn’t either. His friends haven’t been able to help at all, and neither have hers.
Another reason they’re having trouble finding work is that they don’t seem to have the right kind of skills and training. He doesn’t know anything about computers, and she doesn’t either. She can’t type very well, and neither can he. He hasn’t had any special vocational (职业的) training, and she hasn’t either.
Despite all their problems, Jack and Betty aren’t completely discouraged (失意). She doesn’t have a very pessimistic (悲观的) outlook on life, and neither does he. They’re both hopeful that things will get better soon.
61. Who can’t find the new job?
  A. Jack. B. Betty. C. Neither of them. D. Both the two.
62. The main reason of Jack who hasn’t been able to find the job is ___________.

  B. If they want to find another job, they must have some special training.
  C. Jack and Betty are both discouraged.

Everyone uses their own special words to show their feeling. Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years. Others are popular for just a short time. One such American expression is "Where's the beef?" It's used when something isn't as good as it's said to be. In the early 1980s "Where is the beef?" was one of the most popular expressions in the United States. It seemed as if everyone was using it at their time.
Beef, of course, is the meat for a cow, and no food is more popular in American than a ham burger made from beef. In the l960s a businessman named Ray Kroc began buildings small restaurant that sold hamburgers at a low price. Kroc called his restaurant "McDonald’s". Ray Kroc became one of the richest businessmen in America.
Other business people watched his success. Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants. One company called "Wendy’s" said its hamburgers are bigger than those sold by McDonald's or anyone else. The Wendy’s company began to use the expression "Where’s the beef?" to make people know that Wendy's hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy's television advertisement showed there were old women eating hamburgers. The bread that covered the meat was very big, but inside there was only a bit of meat. One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger with such a little piece of beef. "Where's the beef?' she shouted in a funny way. The advertisement for Wendy's hamburger restaurants was a success. As we said, it seemed everyone began using the expression "Where’s the beef?"
64. Why did other people want to open hamburger restaurants?
  A. Because hamburger was very delicious. B. Because people liked Kroc.
  C. Because it could sell beef.           D. Because people wanted to copy Kroc.
65. What does "Where's the beef?" mean according to the passage?
  A. They want to find the beef. B. Something isn’t good as one said.
  C. They want to buy the beef. D. It is very good.
66. Why did the expression become popular?
  A. Every people liked it. B. It’s so good. C. The advertisement helped it. D. Wendy helped it.

International Classmates,

Hi there. I’m Liu Wei. I’m a Chinese teacher at an international school in Beijing. We have kids from all over the world here. In some ways our school is a little different from other schools in China. For example, the pupils don't wear uniforms. Let me tell you about my favorite junior high school students.

Matt comes from New York. He loves rap music. When he walks between classes he always wears headphones. His c1assmates are afraid of him because he's big for his age and he's really noisy! In his free time he watches action films and practices Kung Fu. Today he’s entering a Kung Fu competition. Good luck, Matt!

Brad is one of Matt's classmates. He is a very quiet boy. He was born in Sydney, but his parents are from Poland. He likes speaking Polish and English when he's at home. Brad gets very angry when people can't understand him! Brad's favorite sport is swimming. He wakes up early and trains every day before school.

Lucy is another of my favorite students. She's a tall, beautiful girl from London. She's a good student and she's always studying. Sometimes she can't sleep because she thinks too much about her lessons! Lucy loves Beijing, but she doesn't 1ike the summer. She says it's too hot! She wants to study medicine when she leaves school. I hope she's successful!

The Baiji River Dolphin

Population numbers don't always go up, sometimes they go down. This is the story of the Baiji River Dolphin that makes its home in the Chengjiang River. Over 20 million years ago, the Baiji River Dolphin left the ocean, swam up the Changjiang and has lived there ever since. They have smaller eyes than other dolphins because the Changjiang has many small pieces of earth in it. (73)小的尺码可以帮助保护它的眼睛. However, because they have such small eyes, they can't use their eyes to find food. Instead, this dolphin uses echolocation which is sound waves that hit something and go back to the dolphin to show it where the food is. This is one thing that makes this dolphin so unusual.

About 200 B.C., there were some stories that told of thousands of dolphins in the Changjiang River. But today, not many people see the dolphins. Their population has gone from thousands to about l50. (74) Scientists say that the dolphin population has gone down because the population of the people living on the Changjiang has gone up. They also say that the new dam on the river is also making the dolphin die because it doesn't have enough of the river now to find food in. Scientists have tried different things to try to save this ''panda in the water," but nothing has helped. (75) What would you do to save this dolphin if you had a chance?
