The year was 1839. Vice (副……) President Richard M. Johnson was in New York City on his way to Philadelphia. He was expected at a meeting at 6:30 that evening. When did he begin his trip? At noon! In 1839, it took six and one-half hours by train and ferry (渡船) to get from New York City to Philadelphia. That wasn"t so bad. In 1817, the trip took three days!

If this were a cold winter day, Vice President Johnson would have started much earlier. The Delaware River might freeze over. There would

be no ferry and he would have to walk across the ice.

Today, it"s possible to leave New York City on the 9:00 a.m. train and be in Philadelphia at 10:29 a.m. In fact, some people live in New York City and work in Philadelphia. They use the train schedule (时刻表) below.

How do you read the train schedule? Suppose you" re in New York City and you want to go to Princeton. Run your finger down the list of cities to find Princeton. Next, move your finger to the right. You will see the times that trains arrive in Princeton. Then run your finger up to the times listed across from New York. That"s when the trains leave New York. Make your choice and enjoy the ride!

They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school; they were easy to lose and were a distraction from studies.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? Back experts in the U. S.A. were worried that young students are having back and neck problems because they are carrying too much in their schoolbags.

"It hurts my back when I run," said Ebelin Reyes, a student in Virginia. "It"s hard to go upstairs with my schoolbag because it"s too heavy."

Students have to carry heavy schoolbags on their backs for a whole week"s study. Ebelin is one of them. They have schoolbags with two straps (带子) to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads (负荷) have switched to rolling schoolbags. The schoolbags have wheels (轮子) and can roll on the ground. Shirley Park"s schoolbag weighs (重) 10 kilos, and she said, "I"ll change to a rolling schoolbag because I am starting to have back pain."

How much is too much? Experts say that students should carry no more than 10 to 15 % of their own body weight. A few students have had a good idea to lighten the load: less homework.

Doctor" s suggestions :

Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There"s no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe (贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don"t see the need for presents.

Even friends may never exchange (交换) presents. When I go to foreign countries. I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn"t. I don"t often remember a friend"s birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I"d get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner--that kind from his or her homelandwon"t go wrong, except to government employees (政府雇员) who can"t be given presents.

You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday present. You should only say, "It"s so nice. Thanks." when you get Christmas or birthday presents.

You may want to bring a bottle of wine or flowers to a dinner party, but you"re never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.

At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year--doorman, housecleaner, newspaper senders--anyone who has often helped us.

阅读短文,根据短文内容判断正误。正确的填A,错误的填B。

71. Americans don"t usually open Christmas or birthday presents in front of the givers.

72. Americans also give presents to housecleaner at Christmas to pay them.

73. Government employees can get presents from a foreigner.

74. The writer of this passage must be an American.

75. The main idea of the passage is why the Americans don"t like presents.
