It was last summer. My wife Elsa, our little monkey Katy and I were driving home to Greenwich Village in New York City. We had visited our friends in Washington D. C. It would take us about four hours to get home. Katy was not happy because she had to stay in the car all the way. She jumped here and three. ¡°Put her in the back seat and give her something to eat.¡± I said to Elsa. Just then she jumped on my right arm and there was a big bang at once. Our car crashed into the car in front and caught fire. A moment later, the police arrived and they got us out of the car. ¡°Oh, poor Katy is still in the car!¡± Elsa and screamed and ran back to the burning car before the policemen could stop her. She opened the door but found Katy wasn¡¯t there. While she was running back to us, there was a big explosion(±¬Õ¨). How dangerous! We looked everywhere but didn¡¯t find Katy. Most of you know this mathematical game, of course. You and your friend
draw crosses and circles on a sheet of paper. You do it one after another. The first pupil who gets three marks in a row wins. But do you know that you can play this game another way and it will become more interesting? You must try to make your friend win. If you get your three marks in a row, you don¡¯t win-you lose!
¡¡¡¡¡¡ It is more difficult to play this game the other way. The second pupil can always win (if he plays the right way), but he may not win if the first pupil begins with his mark in the center. Then, if the first pupil always takes a place on the other side of his friend¡¯s mark, nobody will win.
¡¡¡¡¡¡ If your friend does not know the secret which we have explained, you must play each time so as to leave him the greatest number of ways to win. You may try a few games and you will see how interesting it is to play the game this way.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Surtsey was born in 1963. Scientists saw the birth of this island. It began at 7:30 a.m. on 14th November. A fishing boat was near Iceland. The captain found the boat shaking. He noticed a strange smell. He saw some black smoke. A volcano(»ðɽ) was breaking out(±¬·¢). Red, hot rocks(ÑÒʯ), fire and smoke were rushing up from the bottom(µ×²¿) of the sea. The island grew quickly. It was 10 metres high the next day. On the 16th November, it became 60 metres high. Scientists flew there to watch it on 18th November. It was exciting, Smoke and fire were still rushing up. Pieces of red, hot rocks were flying into the air and falling into the sea. The sea was boiling(·ÐÌÚ) and there was a strange light in the sky. One day his father called him. He wanted to see Jack and asked him to meet him at the station on Sunday morning. Jack was very happy.
On Sunday morning, before Jack left, his wife gave him a piece of paper, She wrote something on it. She wanted him to buy some food. After two hours, Jack came back by himself with a lot of food. When he opened the door, he saw his father and his wife talking happily. At that time Jack remembered that he didn¡¯t go to the station to meet his father at all.

I¡¯m a middle school student. I¡¯m fifteen. I study hard and I want to be a nurse when I leave school. Because I think a person should always be ready to help others. And I will do my best to help others as a nurse. Though nursing is very hard, it is useful and important. Do you think so?

101. There is a river near my hometown. It is small but quite beautiful with tall, green trees on both sides. And we can see many different kinds of fish swimming freely in it. In the past, people used to come here to have a walk or to do morning or evening exercises. They all had a good time around here.
In recent years, many factories have been built, and most of them poured dirty water into the small river. The fish and other animals can¡¯t live and they begin to die. Now you can see the terrible, dirty water with much waste things on it. You can hear the noise of machines instead of the birds¡¯ sound. People no longer come here.
How I wish the river could be protected and its beauty would return! Dear friends, let¡¯s do something to protect the poor, small river together!
