Every evening at six o’clock an old man named Bill went to a restaurant near his house. He ate at the restaurant. After dinner he drank coffee and talked to people. He ate there every evening because he was lonely. His wife died, and he had no children.

Later the police called Jack at the restaurant. “Bill died in his sleep,” the police told him. Bill was 82 years old. A week later, a man came to the restaurant and gave Jack $500,000. The money was from Bill. “But … why?” Jack asked the man. “Bill liked you,” the man said. “You were kind to him.
