The year was 1839. Vice President Richard M. Johnson was in New York City on his way to Philadelphia. He was expected at a meeting at 6:30 that evening. When did he begin his trip? At noon! In 1839, it took six and one-half hours by train and ferry (渡船) to get from New York City to Philadelphia. That wasn’t so bad. In 1817, the trip took three days!

If this were a cold winter day, Vice President Johnson would have started much earlier. The Delaware River might freeze over. There would be no ferry and he would have to walk across the ice.

Today, it’s possible to leave New York City on the 9:00 a.m. train and be in Philadelphia at 10:29 a.m. In fact, some people live in New York City and work in Philadelphia. They use the train schedule (时刻表) below.

How do you read the train schedule? Suppose you" re in New York City and you want to go to Princeton. Run your finger down the list of cities to find Princeton. Next, move your finger to the right. You will see the times that trains arrive in Princeton. Then run your finger up to the times listed across from New York. That’s when the trains leave New York. Make your choice and enjoy the ride!

Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students want them.

Mary Bluest said mobile phone use was a distraction (分心的事) to students during school hours and it also gave teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students

She said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn"t get in touch with their children.

Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school; they were easy to lose and were a distraction from studies.

Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There’s no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe (贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don’t see the need for presents.

Even friends may never exchange (交换) presents. When I go to foreign countries. I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn’t. I don’t often remember a friend’s birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I’d get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner--that kind from his or her homeland won’t go wrong, except to government employees (政府雇员) who can’t be given presents.

You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday present. You should only say, “It’s so nice. Thanks." when you get Christmas or birthday presents.

You may want to bring a bottle of wine or flowers to a dinner party, but you’re never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.

At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year--doorman, housecleaner, newspaper senders--anyone who has often helped us.

阅读短文,根据短文内容判断正误。正确的填A,错误的填B。

66. Americans don‘t usually open Christmas or birthday presents in front of the givers.

67. Americans also give presents to housecleaner at Christmas to pay them.

68. Government employees can get presents from a foreigner.

69. The writer of this passage must be an American.

70. The main idea of the passage is why the Americans don‘t like presents.

Have you ever done something stupid that made you feel so embarrassed that you wished you could just disappear? Well, that’s exactly how I felt, one cold Saturday morning last autumn.

I had gone to town to do some shopping, and as I was walking through the park on my way home to the stop, it suddenly began to rain. I ran into a nearby phone box as quickly as I could since I didn’t have an umbrella. It was raining heavily, but it was one of those short autumn showers that don’t last long, so I decided to stay in the phone box until it stopped.

A few moments later. I saw a young man walk up to the phone box, wearing a yellow raincoat and holding a tool box. I didn’t want to go out into the rain. so I picked up the phone and pretended I was talking to someone. I thought the man would go away, but he didn’t. He just waited patiently in the rain, watching me wave my hands about and act as if I was deep in conversation.

Luckily, the rain began to stop after about ten minutes. “OK, Mum,” I said loudly into the phone. “I’ll see you later. Bye!” I put the phone down. Picked up my shopping bag and stepped out of the phone box. “I’m sorry I took so long, ” I said to the man.

“Oh, I don’t want to use the phone, ” he replied with a smile. “I’ve just come to repair it. It’s out of order, you see. ” I felt myself go bright red in the face and I hurried away with my head down, feeling a complete fool. That was certainly one of the most embarrassing moments of my life!
