My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my success. If I won a spelling contest(竞赛) at school, he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I got a promotion(提升), I'd call my father right away and he'd rush out to tell all his friends. In 1970,when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I don't know which of us was more excited.

Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their loves not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity ,nothing could have felt  more natural.

He was a curious man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown to buy a motorcycle. Unfortunately, my father and his motorcycle didn't get along too well. He fell off it so often that he got rid of it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again trusted any vehicle with less than four wheels.

Because of that motorcycle, I wasn't allowed to have a bicycle when I was growing up. Whenever I wanted to ride a bike, I had to borrow one from a friend. On the other hand, my father let me drive a car as soon as I turned sixteen.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard saw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly. "But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put communication(交际)first. 50.Language is used to ________.

A. express oneself B. practice grammar rules

B. talk with foreigners only D. learn lists of words

C. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules

D. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English

A. what they use will become right B. they are against the law

C. they should say sorry to others D. they will become heroes

54.When we speak a foreign language, we should ________.

A. speak in Chinese way B. speak by the rules

C. speak to native speakers D. not be afraid of making mistakes

               (D)

From age eight to eleven, I attended a small school in Bath, England. It was a small school of four classes with about twenty-five children in each class according to(根据) age. For the most part, one teacher had to teach all subjects to the children in the class. However, sometimes the headmaster, Mr Ronald Broches, would come in which he was especially interested. He was a large man with a very happy nature. He had a sense of humor and would delight in telling the children small stories that would make us laugh. He was a very fair man and had a great influence in many of the children. In my own case , I found that he took great interest me and he quickly found that I enjoyed puzzles(难题) . He would often stop me as I was going to class and take a piece of paper out of his pocket, often with a puzzle on it. The puzzles were usually mathematical or logical. As time went on, they slowly got more difficult, but I loved them. Not only that, they made me interested in math and problem solving that stays with me to this day. They also served to show me that intellectual(智力的) activity was rewarding when the correct answers were found, but perhaps more importantly it was great fun.

To this day, I can remember Mr. Broches’ cheerful cry of "Well done!"whenever I got a problem right. The simple communication with a man whom I loved greatly has had a deeply influence on my life. I shall forever be thankful that our paths crossed. Mr. Broches died just two weeks after I had won the 1993 Nobel Prize in physiology or Medicine. Unluckily, I had no chance to speak to him before he died. I learnt later that he heard of my success and I will always hope that he knew the deep influence he had made on my life.

I’m a senior student. I like English very much. Besides attending English lessons at school, I often go to the English corner in the park nears my home on Saturday morning. It was set up (formed) two years ago. Many high school students gather there. Sometimes, some college students and even foreign friends are present at the English corner. There, we practice our spoken English, talk about what we are interested in, exchange our experience in learning English and so on. I’ve learned a lot. I have greatly improved myself in English since I visited it. It is really a great help to me.
