Enid's wedding(婚礼)dress arrived at five o'clock in the evening just seventeen hours before her marriage!
“I must try it on, Mother!” she cried, as she ran upstairs.
Three minutes later Enid's cries brought her mother in. The dress was much too big for her. It was baggy in the front, and the neckline looked all wrong. Enid was in tears.
“Take it back to dressmaker's,” Mrs Bale said. “She must alter it tonight. Hurry now. Take it off and go.”
The dressmaker's shop was closed. “CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK'S HOLIDAY” said a notice on the door. Fresh tears rose to Enid's eyes. She ran home again to her mother.
“This is unlucky, ”Mrs Bale said.” But what are we going to do? Shall I ask Mrs Peters to help? She was a dressmaker once. I'm sure she could alter it for you.”
Mrs Peters was brought in and began to work. She could see what was wrong. She had to take in a lot of material at the front, and that was a big job. Then she altered the neckline—in fact she made it again. At ten o'clock the work was finished, and Enid tried the dress on. It fitted her beautifully.
The three women were having a cup of tea when the doorbell rang. Mrs Bale answered it and looked into the worried eyes of a fat young woman. The woman was carrying a large, flat box.
“Does Miss Enid Bale live here?” she asked breathlessly.

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”
That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better.
Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don't touch!”means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.
If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!

A. Touching is helping us to see better.

Is there anything more important than health? I don't think so. "Health is the greatest wealth," wise people say. You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or stomachache, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high fever and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse (脉搏), test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicines. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about the doctor' s advice, I can' t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his diseases.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: "Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is." The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than
one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man. "But you know, doctor," he said, "it' s not easy to begin smoking at my age."

第二节 写作(满分25分)
Possible version:
In the letter, the writer expects his son to treat him patiently and try to understand him when he gets too old to look after himself.
Every one has a day when he becomes old, me, too. However, to be old doesn’t mean to away from society. Only when I can take a positive attitude to my life and try my best to learn as long as I can live, is it possible for me to catch up with the development of the times.
Just like the father in the letter, I also have some suggestions to my child. When I can not eat myself, drink myself, dress myself, making everything out of order, please don’t shame me or scold me. Don’t you remember how I taught you to do so many things when you are still a young boy? Therefore, please show me more patience. Please treat me as patiently as possible, which is your responsibility as a son. By the way, if I suffer from any hopeless disease, any treatment will be a waste of money, so you can let me alone.
All parents love their children. So do the children. The love between parents and children is so unselfish that we should treasure it.

W: Really? How was it?
M: I used public transportation. It took me more than two hours each day.
W: You’re kidding. I take a bus every day to work and it only takes me an hour.
M: First of all there weren’t any buses in my neighbourhood.
W: Well, why didn’t you drive?
M: Drive? It’s even worse than taking the subway. You know the rush hour traffic!
W: Where did you move to?
M: To an apartment right around here.
W: Really?
M: Yeah, it’s ten minutes’ walk.
W: That must be nice.
M: Well, but there’s a downside.
W: What are you talking about?
M: I’ve been spending too much money since I moved.
W: I don’t understand.
M: I’ve been drinking a lot because I work so close to home.

M:Next, Uh, your passport, please.
W:Okay.
M:Uh, what is the purpose of your visit?
W:I’m here to attend a teaching conference for the first part of my trip, and then I plan on touring the capital for a few days.
M:And where will you be staying?
W:I’ll be staying in a room at a hotel downtown for the entire week.
M:And uh, what do you have in your luggage?
W:Uh, well, just my personal belongings um, … clothes, a few books, and a CD player.
M:Okay … Uh, by the way, is this your first visit to the country?
W:Well, actually, I was born here when my parents were working in the capital many years ago, but this is my first trip back since then.
M:Well, enjoy your trip.
W:Thanks.

M: When do you want to leave for that
seaside town, Martha?
W: I’m not sure yet, but maybe we should leave Friday after work. It’s a long
drive, but I’d rather get there late Friday than midday Saturday. We have three
days off this time, after all.
M: How long is it?
W: Five or six hours.
M: So you leave at 4:30 right after work and you will be there around 9:00 or
10:00?
W: I suppose so. And we could still have a good night’s sleep.
M: What are you going to take?
W: Mostly shorts and T-shirts.
M: You don’t think it’s going to be a bit cold at night at the seaside?
W: Maybe. I’m going to take a sweater or a light coat ——just in case.
M: Hope you have a good time there.

听下面一段独白。 请根据题目要求,从所给的内容中获取必要的信息,填入答题卡标号为16—20的空格中。录音读两遍。你有90秒钟的作答时间。(请将该部分答案写在答题纸上)
Life today has many problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It,s bad for living things in the world.
We need to do a lot of things to fight pollution. Factories must clean their waste water before it flows away, and they must stop blowing dirty smoke into the air. We mustn’t throw waste things on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer cars on the roads, there will be less air pollution. Rules are not enough. Everybody must help to fight pollution.
