Success Is Not a Destination

Should people stop once they have achieved something? No! In life, they are always trying to make things better or have more of the same success.

Athletes are constantly striving to shorten time for races, increase heights or distances.

The world of medicine has had its series of successes, too. Christian Barnard performed several successful heart transplants. Other medical experts have achieved organ transplants. Throughout the ages, mankind has found treatment and cures for cancer and other diseases. A cure of AIDS might soon be discovered.

Age does not seem to slow down achievers. Tina Tuner at 54 is still singing in abundance and attracting sell—out crowds wherever she goes.

Comedian George Burns, in his 90s, wants to perform at Caesar’s Palace when he turns 100.

Success does not belong only to the rich and famous. It should be the goal of everyone. Many successful people have had humble beginnings.

Would you believe that actress Michelle Pfeifer of Cat was a super—market checkout girl?

At work, we strive for achievement too. Success may mean organizing a conference more effectively and efficiently each year. Sometimes, it is not a pat on the back or the promotion that makes it worthwhile.

Often, it is the inner thrill and satisfaction of achievement, no matter how small it may be.

Aiming for success doesn’t mean you are greedy or dissatisfied. It is all part of gaining new experiences. It ultimately makes you a more interesting and useful person in society.

The journey to success has its road blocks, discouragement and distractions. It takes great resourcefulness and achievement to overcome obstacles and setbacks to move on successfully.

 A. any small success will make us excited

C

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches(串)of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life.“Banana 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira.”He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn’t have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.

When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it’s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.

I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. “What’s up?”I asked him.“I…I don’t have money to buy books for school.”I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills.“Will this help?”I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir,”he said.“Thank you very much!”

When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for school—books. What if he’s a cheat(骗子)?And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I realized that I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.

Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.

“Oh, gosh! Long time.”

“Are you in school now?”I asked.

He nodded.

“That’s good,”I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. “Here, I held out a 500 naira bill. “Take this.”He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt.“What’s wrong?”I asked.“It’s a gift.”

He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat(汗水). He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said,“I’ve been waiting to give these to you.”

64. What was the author’s first impression of the boy?

  A. He seemed to be poor and greedy. B. He seemed to have suffered a lot.

C. He seemed younger than his age. D. He seemed good at bargaining.

65. The second time the author met the boy, the boy .

  A. told him his purpose of selling fruit and nuts B. wanted to express his thanks

C. asked him for money for his schoolbooks. D. tried to take advantage of him

66. Why did the author give his money to the boy?

  A. Because he had enough money to do that.

B. Because he had learnt to help others since childhood.

C. Because he held a higher position in the society.

D. Because he had been asked by the news agency to do so.

67. Which of the following best describes the boy?

 A. Brave and polite. B. Kind and smart. C. Honest and thankful. D. Shy and nervous.

D

“Come in, Kim. Have a seat, please,”said Bill Williams, the manager. This was Kim’s first experience with an assessment. After only six months he was due for a raise if this assessment was satisfactory.

“Kim,”began Bill Williams,“I am very pleased with the quality of your work. I have nothing but praise for your devotion and your hard work. My only concern is that you are not active enough in putting forward your suggestions.”

“But,”replied Kim,“I have always completed every assignment you have given me, Mr. Williams.”

“I know that, Kim. And please, call me Bill. But what I expect is for you to think independently and introduce new ideas. I need more input from you, more feedback on how things are going. I don’t need a‘yes-man’. You never tell me what you think. You just smile as though everything is fine.”

“But,”said Kim,“I feel that since you are my superior, it would be presumptuous of me to tell you what to do.”

“I’m not asking you to tell me what to do, but what you think we could do. To make suggestions, I employed you because I respect your experience in this field, but you are not communicating your thoughts to me.”

“Yes, I see. I’m not accustomed to this, but I will try to do as you say…Bill.”

“Good, then. I expect to hear more from you at staff meetings or at any other time you want to discuss an idea with me.”

Oldest, Youngest, or in the Middle?

Were you the first or last child in your family? Or were you a middle or only child? Some people think it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means.

Some people say that oldest children are smart and strong-willed. They are very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child. They give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason.

What happens to the other children in a family? Middle children don’t get so much attention. So they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle ones sometimes get lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. He or she is the“baby.”Often this child grows up to be funny and charming.

Do you believe these ideas about birth order? A recent study saw things quite differently. This study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn’t mean so much to later children in a family. They went out and followed their own ideas.

They took chances. And they often did better in life. Which theory about birth order do you believe? Look at your own family or your friends’ families. Decide which idea fits what you see.

71. This passage is about .

 A. why the oldest children in a family usually succeed

B. why some children refuse to follow orders

C. ways in which birth order may affect how children grow up

D. how people have a lot of trouble agreeing about ideas

72. According to the article, some people think that youngest children grow up to be .

 A. babies B. not capable of doing anything

C. funny and charming D. strong leaders

73. If later-born children take chances rather than following rules, you might expect them to

be .

 A. jealous B. creative C. spoiled D. obedient employees

74. The statement that middle children“sometimes get lost in the crowd”means that     .

 A. they have a poor sense of direction B. they don’t get a lot of attention

C. they have a strong desire to be leaders D. they can’t get along with others

75. The underlined word“theory”means .

W: No, and if we’re ever invited there again, I shall refuse to sit next to Betty.

Text 3

M: My friend agreed to meet me at 11:30. It’s almost 12. Do you think we should try to call her or go to look for her?

W: It’s probably due to the traffic. Let’s give her a few more minutes.

Text 4

M: Excuse me. We’d like another table for our meal.

W: I beg your pardon?

M: We need another table. We have a lot to discuss. This table is too near the window.

Text 5

W: Do you know that Michael Owen has won France Football’s Golden Ball Prize?

M: Not a surprise. He has 20 goals this season.

Text 6

W: The house is beautiful. We are so lucky.

M: Tell me about it.

W: Well, it has a nice living—room, a dining—room and two large bedrooms.

M: It sounds wonderful. What about the kitchen?

W: It’s quite modern. It has a new fridge and an electric stove. It also has a very nice dishwasher.

M: Do you have furniture yet?

W: No. We’re going shopping tomorrow.

Text 7

M: Hello, Julie. Have you ever been to the new sports center?

W: Not yet, Peter. Where is it?

M: On Hill Road, you know, near Mill Street, behind the station.

W: Oh, is it good?

M: Yes, it’s great. You can do a lot of sports. I played table tennis last Thursday and watched the basketball match there.

W: What about swimming?

M: There is a very good swimming pool there. Do you want to go with me next week?

W: Sure. Any day except Wednesday.

M: Well, why don’t we go on Friday? Then we can stay late.

W: OK. Let’s meet after school.

Text 8

M: Excuse me. I work for the City Council. Would you have time to answer a few questions about the new concert hall?

W: Concert hall? Well, my bus won’t be here for a while.

M: Great. Well, first of all, could I have a few details for our records? Obviously, you live around here.

W: Yeah.

M: Well, what’s your occupation?

W: I’m in my second year at the technical college.

M: And do you like music, going to concerts, that sort of thing?

W: Well, I go out three or four evenings a week, but usually I go to the cinema or a disco. I go to a concert if there’s something good on.

M: And what sort of music do you like? Pop?

W: Yes, I like pop. But if you’re talking about concerts, I usually only go if it’s folk. It’s the atmosphere I like, you know, as well as the music.

M: Well, it’s been very interesting. Thank you for talking to me.

W: You’re welcome.

Text 9

M: Have you noticed a lot of differences between your country and ours?

W: Well, that’s a difficult question, but I can think of a few. People here dress quite differently, because the weather is warmer here. We wear winter clothes half the year—thick trousers and warm sweaters. Here people dress more fashionably. Everyone looks well dressed.

M: Is clothing expensive in your country?

W: Yes. It’s more expensive than here.

M: Do you find it easy to talk to people? Can you make friends easily?

W: Oh, yeah. It’s easy to meet people here, even if we speak a different language. People are the same everywhere. They worry about the same things. They worry about the cost of living and about the future of their children.

Text 10

It was time to go home. A doctor was going to call one of his patients. There was ice on the road and the doctor’s car hit a tree and turned over three times. To his surprise, he was not hurt. He got out of the car and walked to the nearest house. He wanted to telephone the garage for help. The door was opened by one of his patients.

“Oh, doctor,”she said.“I have only just telephoned you. You must have a very fast car. You got here very quickly indeed. There has been a very bad accident on the road outside. I saw it through the window. I’m sure the driver will need your help.”

Dear Editor,

In the countryside a lot of children are leaving school at an early age for various reasons. Some have to leave school because their families are too poor to pay for their education. Some find difficulties in study. Some have to help their parents to earn money. And some simply don’t like studying. In my opinion, the main reason that the children can not finish school is the poor living conditions of their families.

I think every child has the chance to receive education. As a student I can’t do much about it. But I would try my best and now, I would like to give them all my pocket money and hope it will help some children.

Yours sincerely

                                 Li Hua
