第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分 满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选

                 A

Most Chinese people don't understand why some westerners don't eat meat. In China, to eat meat is a sign of wealth. If a westerner doesn't take a bite of their Peking duck, there is something wrong.

But many people in Europe and America choose not to eat meat or fish — they are known as vegetarians. In the US alone there are 12 million vegetarians and 19,000 more people stop eating meat every week.

People often become vegetarians in order to lose weight or eat more healthily. A lot of research has shown that vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet. Fried chicken may be delicious to eat, but all that extra fat can damage your heart

There are many other reasons for "turning veggie". It could be that you cannot afford to buy meat. Or maybe you just don't like the taste of it.

A large number of vegetarians choose to give up meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food. They believe many animals are not allowed to live in comfort and, when they are killed, it is carried out in a very painful way.

While some vegetarians are happy not to eat animals, others take it one step further and refuse to eat any animal product. They are known as vegans and will not eat cheese, yoghurt and eggs, or drink milk. Neither will they wear clothes or shoes made from animal skin, such as leather. They say that if it is wrong to kill an animal for food, it is worse to kill it for clothing.

But there are some groups that go even further. Fruitarians believe it is wrong to kill any living plant or animal. Besides refusing to eat meat, they will only eat fruit and vegetables that have not been killed when harvested. This means they cannot take an apple from a tree: they must wait until the apple falls to the ground. Only then can it be considered dead.

56 A lot of ___ choose to give up meat because they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food.

A. vegans B. vegetarians   C. fruitarians      D. researchers

57 According to the text, "vegetarians" refer to people who ___.

A. choose not to eat meat or fish B. choose to eat meat or fish

C. choose not to eat protein D. choose to eat vegetables

58 According to the text, which one of the following is not mentioned?

A. Only in China, there are so many people eating meat.

B. There are many vegetarians in Europe.

C. Vegetarian diets are healthier than the average western diet.

D. There are many reasons for people turning vegetarians.

59 The main idea of the passage: _______.

A. Meat is harmful to health B. Vegetarian diets are popular

C. Food and health D. Meat and health

B

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble-----and was he? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP.

ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Here’s an example. A woman was ironing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a telegram came. The woman’s father died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this one on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what’s behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example------one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There’s room for one more.”The man felt the driver seemed dead, so he ran away. The next day, when the man was getting on a crowded bus, the bus driver said, “There’s room for one more.”

Then the man saw that the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!

Some people say stories like these are coincidences. Others, including some scientists, say that ESP is real. From studies of ESP, we may someday learn more about the human mind.

60. According to the passage, the author believes that the sixth sense is ______.

A. in existence B. imaginative C. not real D. impossible

63. This article is mainly about ______.

A. the human dream B. the sixth sense C. the human mind D. a crowded bus

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than nature and man’s present efforts cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire for a modern way of life. We make “increasing industrialization” our chief aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn’t it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, “I’ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’re making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we’re lost and don’t know where we’re going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when spoken of our modern society.

64.Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted mainly because______.

A. the population of the world is decreasing fast

B. people use too many man-made materials

C. we have more and more industry

D. we are producing more cars, trucks and buses

65. People crowd into the cities because ______.

A. they want very much to find well-paid jobs

B. they are anxious to enjoy the achievements of our society

C. they have become tired of their homeland

D. they have a strong wish to become industrial workers

66. According to the passage, what does man value most?

A. Industry.      B. Health. C. Clean air.    D. The future of the children.

67. The story about the airline pilot tells us that ______.

A. man knows where the society is going

B. people do not welcome the rapid development of modern society

C. man can do little about the problem of pollution

D. the writer is worried about the future of our society

                  D.

It is a matter of common observation that although incomes keep going up over the years, people never seem to become much better off! Prices are rising continuously. This is called inflation(通货膨胀). The money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. People have got used in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars. It seems that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value it lacks one of the qualities of a good money-stability(稳定) of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred(延期) payments. Nobody wants to hold a wasting possession, so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates people spending, and prevents people from saving.

68.From the passage, we can know inflation ______ .

A.seldom happens B.is very common at present

C.is a must D.has become less in recent years

69.According to the passage, if incomes and prices rise together______.

A.the business will become better B.money will hold its value

C.inflation won’t be a problem D.inflation will remain to be a problem

70.When money loses its value______.

A.it’s no longer stable B.the price of the goods will go down

C.foods will lose their value        D.income will keep rising

71.In a period of inflation, people are likely to ______.

A.put much money on the stock market B.stop spending money

C.hold on to money as a dependable possession D.spend money as soon as possible

                  E.

Those who plan to film a hostage(人质)scene might want to make it obvious to everyone around them that it’s a simulation and not the real deal.

That may be the lesson that an independent film crew learned in Larimer County, Colo, after policemen rushed to them during a shoot for a movie.

Members of the crew were at a campground near Lake Carter, shooting a scene where the lead actor takes a girl hostage and beats up on a good man who tries to come between so as to help the girl.

“It happened very suddenly after that. We heard, ‘Freeze! Police!’” said Director Eileen Agosta. They were in the middle of the scene when some policemen ran over, shouting orders to get on the ground, pointing rifles(步枪)at the crew, actor Chris Borden said. Members of the crew were cuffed(上手铐)and held on the ground until the situation was sorted out.

Borden said he believes the only reason the police didn’t shoot him was because they saw a cameraman.

Maj. Justin Smith, a police officer, said they received a call from someone at the lake and then raced to the park, blocking roads and came quietly up to the scene.

“The police didn’t rush into the situation and make a potentially bad situation worse,” said Cpl. Scott Shellhaas, spokesman of the county.

“It was complete ignorance on my part,” said Agosta. “I honestly thought you could tell what we were doing… I wouldn’t have chosen a state park at 3:30(p.m.) on Saturday if I was going to hurt somebody.”

Authorities said the scene they saw was realistic enough--- a woman handcuffed to a car, a man beating another man with a pistol(手枪), people injured and bloodied and someone with a small video camera filming the event.

“It is certainly not beyond belief there days that individuals do videotape crimes as they commit them,” said Smith. “Having a video camera there did not necessarily mean there was not a crime. They should have informed us about the filming and the fact that they would be using a false handgun during the shoot.”

72. The underlined word “simulation” most probably means ________.

A. a misunderstanding created during the course of communication.

B. the activity of producing conditions which are similar to real ones

C. an example of dealing with cruel criminals in a wise way

D. the scene of taking a hostage by one or several cruel criminals

73. The incident in the passage took place __________.

A. on a cold morning B. early in the evening C. on a weekday  D. at the weekend

74. What do you think of the police’s action in the incident?

A. They made the whole situation worse.

B. They were to blame for the misunderstanding.

C. They acted senselessly in the whole affair.

D. They were quick but acted calmly.

75. Which of the following tells the right order of what happened?

a. Some policemen arrived at the scene. b. Members of the film crew were handcuffed.

c. A crew of actors were shooting a film. d. The police received a telephone call.

e. The police sorted out the situation.

Written work.

My hometown is an economic-open-zone. It is a town on the sea with a population of three hundred thousand. Before the liberation it used to be a fishing village. Most people lived on fishing. There was no industry. And there were only few primary schools here.

Since the open-door policy, a lot of foreign businessmen invested here. A lot of factories have been built. Economics have developed rapidly and big port has also been built, which is connected with many ports of other ports both in and out of our country. A new university now has been founded. Three thousand students have already graduated from it. I am sure in the near future our hometown will become more modern.
