Shanghai’s primary and secondary schools began to reduce class hours and introduce more exercise when the new term started on Monday, hoping that students would get more sleep and improve their health.

Some schools in Shanghai’s Hongkou District axed(消减) a morning study session and put off the time that students are expected to arrive at school from 7:30 to 8:00.

In the Luwan District First Central Primary School, students are required to arrive no later than 8:30 and do at least 15 minutes of exercise before classes that begin at 8:45.

“Morning exercises, which give students a boost for the whole day, are most important.” Said Wu Rongjin, a teacher from the school.

In Shanghai, the rate of fatness among students is higher than the national average and the city has the highest percentage of students with bad eyesight, according to a recent Shanghai Education Commission’s report.

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore.

His mother in the house looking out of the window saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling(大喊) to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock(码头), the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred(撕裂) by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches(抓痕) where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma(灾难), asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn’t let me go.”

Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. These two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their separate houses.

One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t returned home. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie didn’t show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.

Curiously, Spotty showed up at Brownie’s house alone, barking and generally pestering (纠缠)Brownie’s human family. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored it. Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was steadily disturbed by the determined, angry little dog. Spotty followed Ted about, barking continuingly, then rushing toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me! It’s urgent!” Eventually, Ted followed Spotty to a deserted spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his hind legs crushed in a steel leg-hold trap. Shocked, Ted now wished he’d taken Spotty’s earlier appeals seriously. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable.

Spotty had done more than simply led Brownie’s owner to his trapped friend. Around the injured dog, Ted found a circle of dog food and table scraps which were later identified as the remains of every meal Spotty had been fed with that week! Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly to keep his friend alive by giving up his own comfort. Spotty had evidently stayed with Brownie to protect him from danger, snuggling (偎依) with him at night to keep him warm and playing with him to keep his spirits up.

Brownie’s leg was treated by a veterinarian and he recovered. For many years later, the two families watched the faithful friends playing and chasing each other down that well worn path between their houses.

64. Which of the following statements is right according to the passage?

 A. Spotty is a determined, royal and angry little dog.

 B. Brownie’s family paid no attention to the dog’s missing.

 C. Spotty appealed for help by pestering Brownie’s family.

 D. Brownie was found finally in a deserted spot far away from the house.

65. The writer mentions “ the worn path” twice in the passage to imply that_____.

 A. the two dogs were so naughty that they trampled the grass

 B. the dogs hated the grass because they thought it blocked their visits.

 C. the friendship between the two dogs are very close

 D. the distance between the two houses are very short.

66. Spotty kept his friend from being starved by_______.

 A. stealing food from his owner. B. visiting him regularly

67. From the passage we can infer that_____.

 A. A friend in need is a friend indeed B. if you love a dog, a dog will love you

 C. dogs always help each other       D. friendship comes first in one’s life

                  D

We’ve all met people that we instantly “like” and want to get to know more, or do business with for that matter. Most of the time these people are following a few basic rules that make their first impression a strong one.

Dress to impress. The key here is to dress modestly and appropriately for the gathering you will be attending. There is no need to wear the latest Brioni suit, but do make sure that your clothing is clean and fits well. If you look untidy, people will assume that you and your business are disordered as well.

Speak clearly. Focus on speaking at a moderate pace with a well-adjusted voice. Also, using proper grammar when speaking and avoiding slang are expected if you are to make a good first impression. Remember: If people can’t understand what you are saying, they will disregard you and your organization. Furthermore, be polite and courteous at all times.

Use the person’s name frequently. This shows the other person that you are paying attention from the very beginning and that you give him enough importance to memorize his name. A bonus(意外收获) is that by using his name immediately, you will be more likely to remember it and impress him even more when you run into him for a second time.

Avoid jokes. I suggest avoiding jokes on the first counter. If you really must make a wisecrack(俏皮话),go with something short so as not to make anyone feel unpleasant. You don’t want to be remembered as “ that offensive fellow.”

Let the other person be the center of attention. Perhaps the most important rule when making a first impression to follow is to avoid hogging the spotlight. Let the other person be the center of attention. The worst mistake you can make is talking continuously about yourself. You will be shown as a selfish person who is only interested in himself, rather than appearing as someone who could help others further their business.

68. The main purpose of the passage is to discuss_______.

A. how to get along well with others.

B. how to make a good first impression.

C. how to make your business successful

D. how to make friends in business

69. Which of the following statements is NOT right according to the passage?

A. People will judge you by your dressing before you open your mouth in the first counter.

B. People will pay no attention to you if you can’t communicate clearly with them.

C. You’d better not use the person’s name frequently in conversation for it is considered impolite.

D. You are supposed to ask the other person about himself and let him be in the spotlight.

70. The underlined word “ appropriately” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”

A. fashionably B. suitably C. comfortably D. well

71. The author advised that jokes should be avoided because________

A. jokes show that you are not serious enough

B. it is hard for everyone to like your joke

C. jokes may waste a lot of time

D. you may make others annoyed when telling jokes

               E

I first heard the term “EQ” in the fall of 1995 when the book “Emotional Intelligence”, by Daniel Goleman, was widely covered by the American press. The extensive(广泛的) research presented in the book supported my own observations and doubts about life and emotions, and told me that I was on the right track in my pursuit of happiness. The research continues to confirm what I had concluded on my own: These feelings are extremely important to individual health, happiness, and social harmony. This might seem a bit obvious, but it was not always obvious to me.

I grew up in a family where we didn’t talk about feelings. We talked about ideas, concepts and principles. As a result, I could tell you what I thought about everything, but I couldn’t tell you how I felt about anything. After several failed relationships, I took time off to reflect on my life and realized I had made many decisions which resulted in unhappiness for myself and others. After studying the literature on emotions and feelings, I concluded that most of my poor decisions could be directly attributed to (归因于) what is now called low emotional intelligence, or low EQ, for short. Previously, I struggled to find happiness through the traditional routes---- material success. Now, however, I realize that:

There’s not much point to have either wealth or relationships if you aren’t happy.

It is hard to be happy with others if you aren’t happy yourself.

It is hard to be happy alone if you don’t feel good about yourself, i,e. have high self-esteem(自尊)

It is hard to have good feelings about yourself if you don’t have good emotional management skills.

Emotional management skills, the main subject of EQ, are, therefore, one of the most basic elements of happiness.

72. According to the passage, we can infer that the author______.

A. has exactly the same ideas with Daniel Goleman

B. is good at thinking about feelings from the beginning

C. has many advanced ideas about life and emotions

D. is a person with high IQ and low EQ

73. We cab learn that the author’s family members_______

A. are wise and hard-working

B. are wealthy and strong

C. are not good at expressing their own feelings

D. get along badly with each other

74. A person who can’t feel happy himself______.

A. will feel happy with lots of friends

B. will not feel happy with others

C. has no self-esteem at all

D. should read the new book about EQ

75. Which of the following sentences is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The author knew how to attain real happiness after reading the book “Emotional Intelligence”

B. The author thought in the past if he possessed a large fortune, he would attain happiness.

C. The author realized he was a person with low EQ after he studied the relationships in the books.

D. The author lacked the skills to deal with relationships with others because of his parents’ parenting style.

W: Which do you like to live in, a modern flat or a traditional house?

M: Of course a modern flat, for it is large and comfortable.

Text2

W: Have you heard about the Bird’s Nest?

M: Yes. It covers 258,000 square meters and hold up to 91,000 people.

Text3

W: How many floors are there in your building?

M: There are twenty-four floors. My apartment is on the twelfth floor.

Text4

W: Spring has come and the weather is warm and bright. What about taking a picnic this weekend?

M: Good idea. But where shall we go, Garden Park or Woodland Park?

W: Garden Park sounds like a nice place to go.

Text5

W: It’s getting late. I guess I’d better leave.

M: Must you go so soon?

W: I’m afraid I really have to go. I’ll have to get up early tomorrow morning.

M: If so, we won’t keep you any longer. Bye.

Text6

W: New York Hilton. May I help you?

M: Mr Thomas Johnson Room 1245, please.

W: Hold on, please. Sorry, Mr Johnson isn’t in at the moment.

M: May I leave a message for him?

W: Certainly. What is the message?

M: Tell him to call Alex Jackson at 202-8669. It’s important.

Text7

M: I’d like to send this parcel to my mother in America. How can I do it?

W: How do you like to send it, by air or by surface?

M: How long does it take by surface?

W: About two or three weeks.

M: That’s too long. This is a Christmas gift. I want it to arrive in America before the Christmas mail rush.

W: If so, I suggest sending it by air. It will be there in 3 to 7 days.

M: That’s much faster. I’ll send it by air then.

Text8

W: Hi, Peter. I’d like to ask you for a small favor. I hope you don’t mind.

M: No, of course not.

W: You see, Helen and I are going to give a party for a lot of people. But our apartment really isn’t big enough. We wonder if it’s possible for us to have it at your place, just for the evening, you know.

M: Well, I’d love to, of course. But just now I’m having the house redecorated.

W: Oh, no. It wouldn’t be now. It’ll be in about two weeks.

M: Two weeks, I see. Unfortunately the job won’t be finished until the end of the month.

W: Oh, that’s a shame. I don’t know what we’ll do.

M: I’m sorry. I’d help if I could.

Text 9

M: Let’s go in. I can’t hear anything. This is a very noisy crowd.

W: What’s happening now? Why is everybody shouting?

M: Can you see that tall man on the opposite side of the field? He’s one of the best football players in Wales.

W: The man with the ball? Yes, but…

M: Goal! Have you ever seen a better goal than that one?

W: What do you mean?

M: Jones has scored. He’s the best player on the field.

W: Who is winning now?

M: Nobody. England has scored one, and now Wales has scored one. That was a very good goal. The English are playing very badly.

W: Look! Jones has got the ball. They’ve only 20 seconds but the Wales Team is going to score again! They’ve done it! The game’s over and they’ve won!

Text 10

Now I’d like to tell you something about my winter vacation. I spent my winter vacation at home happily from February 8th to February 28th.

During it, I paid a Spring Festival visit to my grandpa and grandma and wished them a long life. And they advised me to work hard at my lessons and serve our motherland better in the future. We had a good time with them when we stayed there.

During my holiday, I also had a good rest when I was not helping my parents to do some housework. My parents always praised me in front of others. I did physical exercises every morning and studied for 4 to 6 hours every day. When I went to visit the science museum with my friends, we learned a great deal. And I also decided to work hard in the future.

One Possible Version:

Recently a class meeting was held on whether students should make friends online. Different students have different views. Some students say yes. In their opinion, the internet helps them make many friends. On the other hand, they can more freely express their feelings and opinions by chatting online. What’s more, they can even get help with their foreign language studies.

Others, however, hold the different opinion. They think that making friends online is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. What’s worse, some students get cheated online.

It is my opinion that we students should put our minds on our study, health and safety. As for friendship, we can readily find it among our classmates and other people around us.
