The Mississippi is a romantic river whose relationship with man goes back beyond its discovery by the Spaniards in the 16th century. Indians used the river as a highway and as a source of food, and it was they who gave it its name—“misi” ,meaning “great” and “sipi” meaning “water”.

When the length of its great tributary(支流), the Missouri ,is added to it ,the Mississippi becomes the third longest river in the world. From the source of the Missouri to the tip of the delta(三角洲),it is 2,480 miles long. Its head waters have been compared to a healthy, thick—branched tree, healthy because its main branches ,or tributaries, are navigable for most of their length.

The Indians paddled up and down the river in their canoes. The first streamer was launched in 1810. It had a single great paddle—wheel at the stern ,and was known as a “paddle—wheeler.” Throughout the 19th century these unique ships were queens of the Mississippi. They have become part of American history and American literature . When someone has deeply hurt you ,it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible—and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy ,better appetite and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”

So when someone has hurt you ,calm yourself first .Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize ,you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love ,beauty and kindness around you .Finally ,try to see things from the other person’s perspective(视角). You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance ,fear—even love. To gain perspective ,you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.

73.The text is mainly written to explain .

A.how to keep yourself from being hurt

    B.how to stay mentally healthy

C.how and when to remain calm

D.why and how to pardon others

74.According to the writer ,what is the right way to calm down after being hurt?

A.Try to figure out why you get hurt.

B.Write a letter to the person who hurt you.

C.Persuade yourself to accept what others have done to you.

D.Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt.

75.Dr. Luskin advises us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because .

    A.we are not patient enough

B.we’d feel worse accepting others’ apology

    C.people seldom want to apologize

D.people don’t mean it when they apologize

Respecting Parents Programme

Showing respect to parents is one of the Chinese traditional moral values .As most of the students today are “the only child” in their family, they often regard themselves as the “center” of the family, without caring much about their parents. Our school started a programme. It is “Respecting Parents Programme”. 10 “do’s” have been worked out for the students to follow clearly and easily, including:

“Remember your parents’ birthdays and express your good wishes to them; say ‘hello’ to your parents when you see them returning home; and tell your parents where you go when you leave home.”

Since then the programme has been successful winning praises from parents and other sides of the society. People say this is what we should have done earlier!

the great ship "Titanic" set off for America in April 1912 on its first trip. It was carrying more than 2000 people. The "Titanic" was the largest and finest ship at that time. People thought it was safe to be on the ship because it had 16 compartments with it. Four days later, when the "Titanic" was crossing the sea, the man on watch suddenly saw a very large iceberg aheaD.The great ship turned quickly in time, but before long there was a sound from below. The captain saw the ship go down. To his surprise, he found the ship went sinking fast because five compartments had been broken! Hundreds of people jumped out into the water. As there were not enough lifeboats, about 1500 lives were lost.

Oh, not very well. I've got a bad cold.

    Have you got a temperature?

   Yes, I've got a fever.

   Are you coughing?

Yes, especially at night, quite serious. And I can't go to sleep.

Oh, I see. I can understand that. Urn, I think you've got the flu. I suggest that you go home now. Don't go to work. And take an aspirin every four hours.

How about yesterday and the day before yesterday?

Well, I came by taxi yesterday and.. .

And you were still late! And Tuesday?

Tuesday I went to see the doctor and I waited for my turn for about two

    And tomorrow, Miss Smith?

We've been here five days, and we haven't seen a London fog yet.

Well, it's not the foggy season.

The fall is the real foggy season, isn't it?

Yes, the autumn. But there really aren't any fogs anymore!

Has the weather changed that much?

No, we've learned to control the smoke.

And without smoke there's no fog?

Right. And we've cleaned all the old monuments.

   We noticed that.

Now that London's air is clean, the monuments can stay clean.

We have just moved into a house .

    Really? Congratulations!

Thank you, and we want to buy a new television.

What kind of television do you want to buy?

A color TV, of course, but I'm not sure about the size. Maybe we should buy a bigger one. If we buy a smaller one ,we might have to change it in a few years' time for a bigger one .That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion?

In my opinion, I don't think it's necessary to buy a very big one.

    Any reason?

Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn't big enough. If you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, and smaller size TV can also pick up good programs.

Mum, that's quite true. I'll think about it.

You'd better make a quick decision because the price may go up now.
