四、阅读理解:(16×232

   A.

Each year, millions of people go abroad to work, study, or travel. It’s a great way to find out what life is like in another part of the world! You are probably hoping to make new friends and learn about the culture in your host country: everything from attitudes and beliefs to social customs and popular foods. But constantly having to deal with new situations can be frustrating(令人沮丧的), even stressful.

Homesickness ,stress, fear, and confusion are all symptoms(征兆)of “culture shock”. At first, you may feel like getting on the plane and heading home . It’s OK to have those feelings but the following are some tips that help to handle the challenges that you will face.

Don’t expect to be perfect. You may feel frustrated that you have culture shock, especially since you probably spent so much time preparing for your trip. No matter how much information you read, or how well you speak the host language, it is natural to feel overwhelmed(无法抵抗的)sometimes. If you give yourself some time, things will gradually get easier.

Have an open mind. While it’s certainly OK to feel frustration or confusion in your new surroundings, try not to form an opinion about the new culture too soon. Don’t think of the host culture as better or worse, just different ---you will be more willing to try new things.

Participate. This is obvious, but everybody needs to be reminded. Just watching life go on around you isn’t good enough. You really need to try things for yourself. Don’t worry about making a mistake; people in your host country will generally be very understanding and willing to help if you have questions.

Your study-abroad experience is a unique and special time in your life, one that you will never forget. If you follow our suggestions, you’ll be able to handle it well, and have a wonderful time. Good luck!

56. Which one doesn’t belong to culture shock?

A. Homesickness B. Stress C. Fear D. Sleeplessness

57. What should you do when you feel depressed (frustrated)?

A. Go back to your homeland. B. Talk to someone about your problem.

C. Give yourself some time to get used to it. D. Stop thinking of it at once.

58. What is the main idea of this article?

A. How to overcome culture shock? B. Why do people have culture shock?

C. Who might have culture shock? D. When will you have culture shock?

B

Alex Harley was born in the northeast of New York in 1921, but he spent most of his early life with his mother’s family in Southern Tennessee. His grandmother told him stories about their family. Their history, she said, began with Toby. He was a slave from Africa and his name was Kinta.

Alex Harley went to school and then to college. In 1939, he joined the U.S. coastguard. As he was a Black, his job was to wait on tables and wash dishes. In his spare time, he learned to write stories. He served in the coastguard for 20 years. After he retired,he put all his time into writing.

Alex Harley remembered the stories his grandmother told him. He began to study his family story. After a lot of research, Harley decided that Toby probably was Kinta Kinte for the West African Mandingo people. Kinta Kinte was caught near the Village of Juffure on the Gambia River. He was sold as a slave in Annapolis, Maryland in 1767. Then Harley made a trip to Gambia and talked with a history expert in Juffure. The African historian made his conclusion stronger.

Alex Harley wanted to tell the experiences of the Black people in 18th---and ---19th century America. He spent 10 years researching and writing his family story for the book “Roots”. It was published in 1976. It won a special Pulitzer Prize. A few years later, a film series based on Harley’s book was shown on American television.

MONTREAL(Reuters)----Crossing the US-Canada border(边界) to go to church on a Sunday cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security(安全)rules.

The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they stop, eat and go to church.

There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and US----which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings.

As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this area is closed on Sundays ,so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法地 ).

Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to make a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint.

Albert has requested the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison.” he said.

63. We learn from the text that Richard Albert is_________.

A. an American living in Township 15

B. a Canadian living in a Quebec village

C. a Canadian working in a customs station

D. an American working in a Canadian church

64. Albert was fined because he ________.

A. failed to obey traffic rules

B. broke the American security rules

C. worked in St.Pamphile without a pass

D. damaged the gate of the customs office

65. The underlined word “detour” in paragraph 5 means_____.

A. a drive through the town

B. a race across the fields

C. a roundabout way of traveling

D. a journey in the mountain area

66. What would be the best title for the text?

A. A Cross-country Trip

B. A Special Border Pass

C. An Unguarded Border

D. An Expensive Church Visit

D

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your recent letter, in which it is mentioned that travel has many disadvantages. I disagree with you. In my opinion, we can benefit a lot from travel.

It is very exciting to visit different places, and the experiences will remain in your mind all of your life. While traveling, you’ll see landscape different from your own homeland, witness different cultures, and meet people of different colors and races. Some day, you may draw upon those good memories and again have the pleasure of past experiences.

Travel can broaden a person’s perspective. Once you have had the pleasure of meeting people of other countries, your thoughts and decisions in the future will be affected. No matter how well-educated you may be, you will learn a lot during your travels.

                                  Yours,

                                  Li Hua
