Nineteen South Korean students had spent 10 days working as volunteers in a leper(麻疯病) village in Lianjiang, Guangdong Province, the Southern Metropolitan News reported Monday.
Most of the students had to work part-time for their airfares and other expense before they went to Guangdong. The cost for each was about 4,000 yuan(US$ 480), the report said.
Together with other Chinese volunteers, the South Korean students lived in the leper village, helping the villagers repair houses.
They also taught children singing and dancing, as well as telling them about South Korean customs.
Although they could not speak Chinese, the South Korean volunteers did not think language was a trouble. “We used body language to communicate with the children and the Chinese volunteers also helped us in translation,” a Korean student said.
They planned three dancing and singing parties for the villagers but only one was held because of continuous rain.
“As 90 percent of the 100-odd leper villagers are senior citizens, we could not hold parties outdoors when the weather was not suitable,” a volunteer said.
They finally had a party after putting up a huge tent. “We had wonderful time during the two-hour performance,” they said.
An interesting experience was that they learned how to cook with firewood as they all came from cities where gas cookers are popular. “The villagers taught us a lot of useful knowledge and brought us delicious food,” a volunteer said.
The leper village is a place where recovered leprosy patients live. Guangdong had several leper villages in Qingyuan, Chaozhou, Maoming and Lianjiang, the report said.

六 书面表达
Dear Editor,
I’m a Senior Two student. I’m writing to tell you my opinion on whether middle school students can go to school with mobile phones. I think they can do that, because students can stay in touch with their friends and families wherever they are. Besides, the mobile phone is a way to have fun.
However, there are some problems with using the mobile phones. The ring of phones can disturb teachers and students in the classroom. Another problem is that some students spend too much time and money on phone calls and sending messages.
In a word, I suggest students not use phones in the classrooms. In addition, as it is expensive, the owner should take good care of it.
