They had shared a flat with Watson for two years, so they knew that he slept like a log. Any amount of noise in the flat quite failed to wake him up if he was sound asleep. Even if they rushed into his room shouting his name to the skies, the sleeping Watson would not move. Even so, they were surprised and amused when he told them about his holiday in Norfolk. He had spent nearly a week riding a bike slowly round the long coastline, sightseeing by day and camping out each night in different place. He slept in a sleeping bag in a small tent, which he put up usually in a corner of a field near the roadside, with his bike locked onto one of the tent poles. Well, poor Watson woke up on the fifth morning about ten o’clock and looked about to find not only his bike and the tent pole gone but also the tent and all his clothes. In the 19th century Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific Coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the “Great American Desert” in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.

The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat, sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.

In Arizona, man-made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch(拱) of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.

There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers(徒步旅行者) in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.

In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130-165 degrees Fahrenheit. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America-925 meters below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.

Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes, and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live underground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cactus(仙人掌) need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant colour.

61. In the 19th century. Americans moved from the east to the west because they ______.

Long before there wasn’t any Washington or any United States, while there were trader Indians on the shores of the river that flows by the place where the present Washington D. C. stands. These Indians paddled canoes(独木舟) up and down the river and traded with other Indians, swapping things they had for things they wanted—beads for furs, bows for arrows, corn for potatoes. In the Indian language the name for traders was Potomac, so now we call the river the Potomac River after these trader Indians. The Potomac separates two states—Maryland and Virginia. They are named after two English queens—Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I who never married and was called the Virgin Queen. The Potomac Indians paddled their canoes down the river until they came to a much broader body of water. The mental ability tests or intelligence(智力) tests used most often today are based on the work of a Frenchman, Alfred Binet. In 1905, Binet was asked by the French Ministry of Education to develop a way to decide those children in French schools who were too “mentally ill” to have ordinary schooling and who needed special education. The tests had to recognize clearly who were only behind in school from those who were actually mentally ill.

The items(项目) that Binet and his workmate Theophile Simon included on the test were chosen on the basis of their ideas about intelligence. Binet and Simon believed intelligence includes such abilities as understanding the meaning of words, solving problems, and making common-sense judgements. Two other important supposed points also shaped Binet’s and Simon’s work: (1) that children with more intelligence will do better in school and (2) that older children have a greater ability than younger children.

Binet’s first test is made of thirty tasks. They were simple things most children learn as a result of their everyday experiences. The tasks were arranged in groups, according to age. Binet decided which tasks were suitable for a given age group by giving them first to a large number of children of different ages. If more than half of the children of a given age passed a test, it was considered suitable for that age group.

71 The main purpose of this passage is to ______.

  A. tell us where intelligence tests came from

  B. explain the basic rule of intelligence tests

  C. describe the changes in the content of intelligence tests

  D. state the development of intelligence tests

72. The intelligence test was designed by Alfred Binet in 1905 ______.

  A. to choose top students B. to know who had received ordinary schooling

  C. to put students in a light order D. to make sure who required particular treatment

73. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. Intelligence includes word understanding and problem solving.

  B. More clever children usually do better in schools.

  C. The French Ministry of Education was charged with the development of first intelligence tests.

  D. Intelligence has something to do with age.

74. How did Binet decide which tasks to include on his first test?

 A. He first worked out thirty tasks for mentally-ill children.

  B. He first gave the tasks to many children he thought suitable.

  C. He first gave all the tasks to many children both younger and older.

  D. He first gave some of the tasks to different groups of children.

75. In the passage, the description of Binet’s intelligence test is developed in the order of ______.

  A. its purpose, basis and contents(内容) B. its purpose, items and tasks

  C. its purpose, method and results D. its background, basis and supposition
