IV:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort (不舒适). So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops because the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen (氧气) which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

56. Some birds like to sit on a sheep because _____.

  A. they depend on the sheep for existence

B. they enjoy traveling with the sheep

C. they can eat its parasites

D. they find it most comfortable to sit on the sheep’s back

  A. birds and parasites B. birds and sheep

  C. parasites and sheep D. sheep, birds and parasites

58. It can be learnt from the passage that the coral depends on the plant for _____.

  A. comfort B. light C. food D. oxygen

59. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

  A. Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence.

  B. Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.

  C. Some plants depend on each other for food.

  D. Some animals live better together.

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman. I once read a saying: “If somebody wants something of your, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider his an exaggeration(夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.

You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn't been a salesman. You needn't stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn't listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn't always keep patience and a smile; you needn't repeat the same sentences over again; you needn't talk to somebody you dislike…

I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. Apart from the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don't think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost.

Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study.

Most students don't see the relationship between study and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn't must for financial经济的 reasons, students should think carefully about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation.

A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower.

62. The writer thought _____ .

A. to do part-time job was unnecessary

B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study

C. it hard to plan study and work correctly

D. part-time jobs were good for students

63. Who should take part-time jobs according to the text above?

   A. Every college student. B. Those who want to get study experience.

   C. Those in great need of money. D. Those from very rich families.

One of the greatest struggles for parents is trying to help their children eat healthy foods. Parents play a big role in shaping children’s eating habits. For example, when parents eat a variety of foods that are low in fat and sugar and high in fiber, children learn to like these foods as well. Don’t give up if your child does not like a new food right away. It may take a little while. With many parents working outside the home, child-care providers also help shape children’s eating and snacking habits. There are some ways for parents to help their children eat better.

Offer your child a wide variety of foods, such as grains, vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy products and lean meat(瘦肉)or beans.

Let your child decide whether and how much to eat. Keep serving new foods even if your child does not eat them at first.

Cook with less fat!! Bake, roast or poach(煮)foods instead of frying.

Limit the amount of added sugar in your child’s diet. Choose cereals(谷物)with low or no added sugar. Serve water or low-fat milk more often than sugar-sweetened sodas and fruit-flavored drinks.

Choose and prepare foods with less salt. Have fruits and vegetables on hand for snacks instead of salty snack foods.

Involve your child in planning and preparing meals. Children may be more willing to eat the dishes they help prepare.

Have family meals together and serve everyone the same thing.

Make sure your child eats breakfast. Breakfast provides children with the energy they need to listen and learn in school.

64. The passage is written mainly for ______.

A. children B. child-care providers C. teachers D. parents

65. According to the passage, if children don’t like a new food right away, parents should

_____.

A .criticize the children B. stop asking the children to eat it at once

C. ask experts for advice D. use as much time as needed without hurrying

66. The following ways are useful for children’s healthy eating EXCEPT _____.

A. putting more salt into food B. making sure children have breakfast

C. limiting the amount of added sugar in children’s diet

D. encouraging children to prepare meals

67. We can infer from the passage that ___________.

A. parents play a big role in shaping children’s eating habits

B. foods which are baked, roasted or poached contain less fat than fried foods

C. children cannot be healthy if they don’t follow parents’ advice

D. teachers should play a more active role in shaping children’s eating habits

D

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most bout. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun----see a great movie perhaps----and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience. E-mail is also an inexpensive way stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t eliminate(排除)any of the old ways.

68. The purpose of this passage is to ______.

A. explain how to use the Internet

B. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology

C. tell the merits(价值)and usefulness of the Internet

D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet

69. The use of E-mail has it possible for the writer to __________.

A. spend less time working B. have more free time with his child

C. work at home on weekends D. work at a speed comfortable to him

70. According to the writer, E-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one ____.

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently

B. keep one’s communication as personal as possible

C. pass on much more information than the later

D. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the later

71. The best title for this passage is ___________.

A. Computer: New Technological Advances

B. Internet New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship

C. Computers Have Made Life Easier

D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication

Saving Our City

It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish must be treated properly, otherwise it may cause problems. It may pollute the air and water. If people breathe the polluted air or drink the polluted water, they may get ill.

Our city has begun to pay attention to the problem. For example, rubbish is sorted. Some rubbish, such as newspapers and glass, is recycled. The rest, which is believed to be harmful, is sent to a certain place and buried. Laws have been passed to protect the environment, so waste water should be and is treated before it is poured into rivers.

We've been trying, but there is still a long way to go. We should do our best to fight against pollution.
