Smart jobseekers need to rid themselves of several standard myths about interviewing before they start looking for a job. What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some tips to help you do your best at your next interview.

Myth 1: The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offer

Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don’t want! So before you do please an employer, be sure you want the job.

Myth 2: Always please the interviewer

Not true. Try to please yourself. Of course, don’t be hostile (敌对的) ─ nobody wants to hire someone disagreeable. But there is plainly a middle ground between being too ingratiating (逢迎的) and being hostile.

Myth 3: Try to control the interview

Nobody “controls” an interview. When someone tries to control you, you resent (怨恨) it. When you try to control others, they resent you. Remember you can’t control what an employer thinks of you, just as he cant’ control what you think of you. So be ready to give and take when being interviewed; never control the interview.

Myth 4: Never interrupt the interviewer

Study the style of the effective conversationalists (健谈的人); they interrupt and are interrupted! An exciting conversation always makes us feel free ─free to interrupt, to disagree, to agree enthusiastically (热情地). Just hang loose. Try being yourself for a change. Employers will either like or dislike you, but at least you’ll have made an impression. Leaving an employer indifferent is the worst impression you can make.

59. To be your natural self in a job interviewer will ________.

  A. make your interviewer angry

  B. please your interviewer

  C. leave an impression on the interviewer

  D. leave the interviewer indifferent to you

60. For jobseekers, efforts to control the interview are likely to _______.

  A. affect the interviewer’s opinion of them

  B. lead to the offer of a job

  C. enable them to express themselves fully

  D. help to create a favourable image of themselves

61. To ______ is one important thing to keep in mind when being interviewed for a job.

  A. try to obtain the job B. reject the job first

  C. qualify yourself for the job D. see if it is a job you want

62. The right attitude to a job interviewer is to be ________.

  A. angry B. hostile C. pleasing D. agreeable

63. “Hang loose” in the last paragraph means to ______.

  A. stay calm and relaxed B. become weak and passive

  C. take charge D. sit back comfortable

Polly Jones lived on a farm. She had lived there all her life, all twelve years of it. Her father, who managed the farm, had just lifted the potato crop. Prices were high; he wanted to sell the crops as quickly as he could.

Polly wandered over the rough field looking for the smaller potatoes that the pickers had accidentally missed. She found one, then another, then a handful. She was pleased. They were delicious once cooked. Then she caught sight of something else. It looked like a piece of colored stone. Polly picked it up and thought how pretty it was. She could see a pattern on it: a picture of a fish and a part of leaf. She scraped (擦去) the soil away around her feet and found that she was standing on what seemed to be a piece of pavement (铺石路). Stuck to another piece of stone was something small and round like a button. She realized it was an old coin.

The filed was busy the next morning though not with potato pickers. In front of the house where the farm machinery usually stood were several cars and a police car. A group of distinguished – looking men and women had appeared the morning after her father’s telephone call. The local television station had shown some pictures of the field with Polly pointing to the place where she had found her pavement. It was proving to be of Roman origin and was being described as the most exciting thing that had happened in the area since the end of the Second World War. In those days an American airbase had occupied the site of the potato field.

A week later about forty students arrived from the local university. That afternoon a truck with equipment arrived. The excavation (挖掘) was officially under way. Permission had been given and the “dig”, as it was called, was expected to last several months. Polly wondered how the everyday work of the farm would get done with so many strange people around and cars coming and going all day long. All the usual activity had mad the cows and sheep restless. The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is plagues (疫病) that flesh receives.

The most widespread fallacy (谬误) of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not.

They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold, and it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever, but they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mil dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches (战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.

In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp (奥斯维辛集中营), naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.

At the Common Cold Research Unit England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretched of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be dipped with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until does to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

In the cold we have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most pains- taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressor (止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms (症状).

72. The writer offered _____ examples to support his argument.

  A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 3

  C. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors.

  D. A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already has one.

  A. they are working in the isolated arctic regions

  B. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather

Text 10

There are many arguments about the strong points and weak points of examination, Some people think examination is the only way to test how well the students have mastered the knowledge. But on the other hand, some people think examination can’t test what the students have really studied. And examination is only a heavy burden for the students.

As for me, I think the result of the exam is just like a mirror for both teachers and students. Through examination, teachers can know well about what students have mastered and what they haven’t, As for the students, they car/check their study and get to know on which aspects they have not done well. So they will make much improvement in their study.

Examination can also inspire the students to improve their studying methods and to work together.

Although exam has so many strong points, we must use it reasonably, because too many exams will be burdens for both teachers and students.

七、书面表达

In recent years the number of private cars has been increasing rapidly in our country. In 1990, there were one million private cars. As time went on , the number of private cars went up to 5 million in 1999. Now there are more than 10 million cars in China.

As we know, a car is very convenient. We can go to any place more quickly. And it can also develop tourism. Besides, the increase of the number of private cars can help car industry to develop faster.

However, more cars may cause traffic accidents and more air pollution. What’s more, waste gases from cars can do great harm to our health. Parking is also a big problem.

In my opinion, I hope the government will control the number of the cars so that we can breathe fresh air/ save energy/ have less accidents ---.
