第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

Some time ago, I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there was a lot of antique(古董)shops near my home. So I left home one morning, carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop, expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man didn't even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth ---so I decided that my approach(way) must be wrong.
I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that. It's nothing.”
Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I'll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I'm sorry. I'll give you twenty -seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’ ” “I wouldn't have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver(five dollars )?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

Mark felt that it was time for him to take part in his community, so he went to the neighborhood meeting after work. The area’s city councilwoman(女议员) was leading a discussion about how the quality of life was decreasing. The neighborhood faced many problems.
Mark looked at the charts taped to the walls. There were charts for parking problems, crime, and for problems in vacant (空置的) buildings. People were supposed to suggest solutions to the councilwoman.
It was too much for Mark. “The problems are too big,” he thought. He turned to the man next to him and said, “I think this is a waste of my time. Nothing I could do would make a difference here.”
Mark thought some more on his way to the bus stop. “People should just take care of themselves,” he decided. “That’s enough to do. I can’t take on all the problems of the world.”
As he neared the bus stop, Mark saw a woman carrying a grocery bag and a baby. She was trying to unlock her car, but she didn’t have a free hand. As Mark got closer, her other child, a little boy, suddenly darted into the street. The woman tried to reach for him, but as she moved, her bag shifted and the groceries started to fall out. Mark ran to take the boy’s arm and led him back to his mother. Then he picked up the groceries while the woman smiled in relief. “Thanks!” she said. “You’ve got great timing!”
“Just being neighborly,” Mark said. As he rode home, he glanced at the walls of the bus. On one of them was “Small acts of kindness add up.” Mark smiled and thought, “Maybe that’s a good place to start.”

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind is founded in nature, such unhappy person would be the more to be pitied. the intention of criticizing (批判) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others. Nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step of speaking a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend of excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
63. People who are unhappy ________ .
A. always consider things differently from others
B. usually are affected by the results of certain things
C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
64. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “________”.
A. have a good taste with social life
B. make others unhappy
C. tend to scold others openly
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
65. We can conclude from the passage that ________ .
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people can not understand happy person
66. If such unhappy person insists on keeping the habit, the author suggests people should ________ .
A. prevent any communication with them
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
D
Having watched a number of international friendlies(友谊赛) between Chinese teams and touring Europeans and Latin Americans, some people called the game a disappointment for the Chinese. I would think that they should be happy about the loss, because it could open the eyes of some Chinese fans, and give a strong push to Chinese soccer(足球), helping the national programme to catch up with the rest of the world. It is true that Chinese nationals have played some good games, but on the whole, I think, Chinese soccer is still in its infancy(初期). Whether one likes it or not, this is a fact the Chinese have to recognize. It calls for painstaking(不辞辛劳) efforts by the coaches and the players to produce a world-class team in China.
As we see it, there are a lot of very talented(有天才的) football players in China, but they need polishing(磨练) in skill, in physical conditioning and general culture.
We soccer experts have to teach players, in the first place, to enjoy the play of football, because the public expects their favorites to give them the pleasure of watching and enjoying the art of play.
The Chinese players seem to be running wildly without purpose or just to tire themselves out. Their ball control seems poorer.
To bring China’s soccer to new highs, new training methods and strategies(策略) have to be introduced, personal skills and team work have to be improved and players’ ability to deal with confrontation(对抗) must be bettered.
Last but not least, the Chinese must have a clear idea of what level Chinese soccer is at. Will it be possible for the Chinese to start to improve themselves. Only by realizing that there is room for improvement,
67. The first sentence tells us ______ in the friendly matches with touring foreign teams.
A. Chinese teams have been beaten
B. touring foreign teams have been beaten
C. Chinese football team was beaten
D. Chinese football teams have always won
68. The passage tells us that the writer ________.
A. felt disappointed about Chinese soccer
B. felt sad about Chinese soccer
C. agreed with some people on Chinese football teams
D. think the loss is good for some Chinese football fans and Chinese soccer teams and officials
69. The Chinese players and coaches have to _______ to produce a world-class team.
A. make painstaking efforts
B. learn useful things from other countries
C. recognize the place of Chinese teams in the world
D. All of the above
70. It seems to the writer Chinese soccer __________.
A. is still in a beginning or early period of soccer
B. is the best in the world
C. is the worst in the world
D. is impossible to catch up with the rest of the world

A. Chinese soccer fan B. foreign soccer expert
C. Chinese soccer expert D. student

Nowadays when we need a surgical(手术上的) operation or dental treatment, we are usually given an anesthetic (麻醉剂). There are two kinds of anesthetic: one stops the patient feeling the part of the body being operated on, and the other puts the patient to sleep so that they don’t feel anything. The first kind is called a local anesthetic and the second is called a general anesthetic.
Modern anesthetics are complex chemicals, but in the past, doctors and dentists used simpler chemicals, like alcohol. In 1799 Sir Humphry Dary, the British chemist and inventor, discovered that a chemical called nitrous oxide ( often called laughing gas) could reduce pain and make people feel sleepy. For some years people used it at parties for fun, but doctors showed little interest in it. The first person to use a general anesthetic was probably the American dentist, William Morton. He used a chemical called ether in October 1846.
The problem with these early anesthetics was that they often made the patient feel ill and doctors could accidentally give their patients too much, causing them to die. They were also difficult to give, as they had to be poured onto a piece of cloth, which was then held over the patient’s nose.
Modern anesthetics are very safe. They are more easily controlled, and there are expert doctors called anesthetists who specialize in giving them. There have also been great developments in the use of local anesthetics, such as the introduction of an anesthetic that is injected into the patient’s back to stop them feeling the lower half of their body. This is often used to reduce the pain of giving birth.
One of the oldest forms of anesthesia is acupuncture. This has been used in China for many thousands of years and is now being used increasingly in Western nations to treat many different health problems. In acupuncture, special needles are stuck into the skin at particular points, and sometimes electricity is passed through them. This causes certain pain-killing chemicals, already in the body, to be released into the blood.
72. The story is about____________.
A. the history of anesthetics B. complex chemicals
C. the danger of pain-killers D. the history of alcohol
73. The two types of anesthetic are ____________.
A. local and general B. complex and simple
C. ether and alcohol D. nitrous oxide and acupuncture
74. The name of the chemical first used as a general anesthetic was _________.
A. laughing gas B. ether C. complex chemicals D. nitrous oxide
75. The Chinese have used _________ as an anesthetic for a long time.
A. alcohol B. ether C. electricity D. acupuncture

Dear Editor,
I’m a senior two student. I’m writing to tell you my opinion on whether middle school students can go to school with mobile phones. I think they can do that, because students can stay in touch with their friends and family wherever they are. Besides, the mobile phone is a way to have fun.
However, there are some problems with using mobile phones. The ring of phones can disturb teachers and students in the classroom. Another problem is that some students can spend too much time and money on phone calls and sending messages.
In conclusion, I suggest students not use phones in the classroom. Also, as it is expensive, the owner should take good care of it.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
