We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim, as a friend, really feel good about it? Or did he envy my luck?” “And was Paul friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad.

But when we look back, it is too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends, or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings. And if we do not really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog!” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy!” that is being friendly. But “a lucky dog”? There is a bit of envy in those words. What he may be saying is that he does not think you deserve(应得)your luck.

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem. But this phrase contains the thought that your problem is not at all important.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Is what he says shown by the tone of voice? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save your another mistake.

More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third-floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to £50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.

However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing(倒开)your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid(有效)medical certificate(证书)which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these facts request you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.

60. Wearing a seat belt in a vehicle ______.

The Taj Mahal(泰姬陵) is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian architecture. It is at Agra in northern India. It lies beside the River Jumna in the middle of gardens with quiet pools.

The Taj Mahal was built by the Mogul emperor Shah Jehan, who ruled India in the seventeenth century. It is in memory of his favorite wife, Arjumand Banu Bagam, known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by a local Muslim architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori. The whole building, with gardens and gateway structures, was completed in 1643. The Taj Mahal stands at one end of the garden tomb with a marble path. The room is softly lit by the light that passes through double screens of carved marble set high in the walks. The building now is kept in good condition.

The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build. Shah Jehan planned a similar building, but in black instead of white, to lie on the other side of the river. But before it could be build, Shah Jehan was imprisoned(监禁) by his son and buried next to his wife in the Tai Mahal.

One of the most simple and beautiful practical jokes(恶作剧) ever performed was the brain-child of the prince of practical jokers, William Horace de Vere Cole. Armed with a ball of string(细绳), Cole went up to a man in a London street and said, “Excuse me, sir, I am carrying out some survey work. Would you mind holding the end of this piece of string for a moment, while I take some measurements?”

The man said that he would be happy to help him. Cole handed him the string, unwound(展开)it, and vanished(消失) round a corner. He then raised his hat to another passer-by and repeated the question. The man agreed. Cole thanked him and made off.

Goodness knows how long the two men were left holding the string. It may have been for hours, though one doubts it. Cole was unable to enjoy their embarrassment(尴尬), but he may have congratulated himself that he had created the very model of a successful practical joke.

Rather more elaborate(精心设计的) in Cole’s list of handsome tricks was a type of joke which seems to be rare these days-taking up the road. Early one morning, he arrived in Piccadily(a main street in central London) dressed as a workman. He spent several hours digging a large hole in the center of the street. Then he walked off.

Nobody questioned him, and the hole remained for several days before the local council decided that it might be a good idea to fill it in.

Some time later, a party of Oxford undergraduates moved in on Oxford Street. By the end of the day, they had taken up a hundred yards of roadway without being challenged. At the time, it seemed to be a record, but it was not to stand for very long. A few weeks later, a rival(对方的)party worked hard for six days, digging Throgmorton Street in the city of London. Nobody, at any time, asked to see their credentials(证件). And, once they had departed, another ten days passed before a representative from the City Surveyor’s Department came along to investigate.

But these things happened many years ago, when roads were built from wooden blocks and were much easier to take to pieces. Nowadays, you would need a pneumatic drill(风钻), a compressor(压缩机) and Heaven knows what else.

68. According to this passage, a practical joke is a joke that ________.

A. is played on someone to make him look amusing

B. is being practised before being used

C. requires a lot of practice

D. is simple to carry out

69. In Paragraph 6, the word “it” can be replace by ______.

    A. The two men holding the string.

    B. The digging in Oxford Street.

C. Cole’s digging in Piccadily Street

D..The digging in Throgmorton Street.

71. Why did the two men agree to hold the ends of the piece of string?

    A. They thought that they were helping Cole to measure something.

    B. They thought that they were obliged to do so.

C.They were very well-mannered men.

D. Each man thought that he was playing a joke on the other man.

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sport.” Progress in this direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part realize the cruelty and destruction.

The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper judgments through independent thought are led along way away by their gunning parents. They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and guncarrying as a way of putting redder blood in the veins (血管). They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun.
Wildlife is disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wildlife and habitat (栖息地). Habitat loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? There doesn't seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our birds is not improved.

Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most people do not shoot they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.

Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through the agony of dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human-character, then perhaps we should encourage war.

72. According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting-because      .

A. they have little knowledge of it

B. it helps to build human character

  C. it is too costly to stop killing wildlife

  D. they want to keep wildlife under control

73. The underlined word "agony" in the last paragraph probably means .

A. form      B. Condition C. pain      D. sadness

74. According to the text, the films children watch at school actually       .

  A. teach them how to deal with guns safely

B. praise hunting as character-building

C. describe hunting as an exercise

 D. encourage them to have guns of their own

75. It can be inferred from the text that the author seems to       .

  A. blame the majority of people

  B. worry about the existence of wildlife

 C. be in favour of war

  D. be in support of character-building

Dear friends,

In my opinion, it is harmful for senior-school students to visit Internet bars. Firstly, instead of searching for useful information on the net, some students ply network games or chart with strangers. Sometimes, some games are too violent and online friendship is seldom worth trusting. Secondly, just like smoking, once we form the habit of going to net bars, it’s difficult for us to get rid of it. Some students even stay there day and night, which is harmful for their study and health. Last but not least, because of these bad effects, our parents are especially worried. In a word, senior-school students shouldn’t visit Internet bars.
