Net Library is a library that lends out digital(数字化的)books. It treats a digital book like a paperback copy. It charges libraries per book per copy and gives publishers a cut of the total income.
From the consumer’s(消费者)point of view, this means that if more than, say, five people want the latest Danielle Steel romance novel, other people who request that book will get a message saying the title is unavailable.
It’s a model many publishers seem to have embraced. More than 350 gave the company rights to hand out their digital works, and McGraw-Hill Corporation and Houghton Mifflin Corporation have put money in the company. The California public libraries and about 1, 800 others across the US are trying out the Net Library service.
Some librarians criticize the New Library model. Stanford University librarian Michael Keller argues that the company is creating an unnatural fear of digital works, which is contrary to the ideas of the Internet.
Keller and some other librarians argue for the e-book vision set forth by EBrary. EBrary is starting a service that lets us users read books for free.
But it will charge about 25 cents a page when a person tries to print out material or copy and paste it into a different file or tries to download a copy onto a computer.
Christopher Warnock, chief executive of EBrary, believes most consumers won’t want to buy entire books, only the parts that interest them.
“There’s not really a lot of good in owning an electronic file and having to store it and manage it. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.
59. How do publishers get money from the Net Library?
A. They get money from selling their books to the Net Library.
B. They share the money with the Net Library.
C. They get money by cutting the cost of the books.
D. They get the money from the readers.

A. don’t care if they are charged money
B. enjoy the service of the Net Library

D. complain about the limited number of the new books
62. What does the last paragraph mean?
A. Net Library is not a good way for the consumers.
B. There is no need for consumers to have a whole book.
C. EBrary is not a good library for the consumers.
D. It’s reasonable to charge the consumers money for copying some pages.
C
The people responsible for the pop revolution were four Liverpool boys. They joined together in a group and called themselves The Beetles. They played in small clubs in the back streets of the city. At the time, the famous stars had their songs to join in and dance to the “beat” of the music.
Because a lot of people take part in them, they formed the essential characteristic of pop culture. The Beetles won the love and respect of people of all ages. As they developed, their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but of death and old age and daily life. They were respected by some serious musicians. Largely thanks to The Beetles, pop music has grown into a great and money-making industry. In 1970—71 the group broke up. They still write and record songs separately. But whatever happens to their music, The Beetles will surely have a lasting place in the social history of Britain.

There are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket , making you believe that they are worth a try . How ? Packaging (包装)is the silent but persuading salesman .
There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that he is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.
Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.
Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and
peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart.
That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young
and old.
This new consumer response(反应)to
the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy
to satisfy both body and soul.
67. According to the passage, ______ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to
buy
the product.
A. the pleasing color of the
package B. the special taste of the product
C. the strange shape of the
package D. the belief in the
product
68. If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ________.
A. bring excitement to the
consumers
B. attract the consumers’
attention
C. catch the eye movement of the
consumers
D. produce a happy and peaceful
feeling
69. “And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up.” This sentence
suggests that
consumers today are ________.
A. starting to notice the
importance of new food
B. enjoying the beauty of nature
more than before
C. beginning to like green
vegetables
D. paying more attention to their
health
70. It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ________.
A. vegetable dish B.
healthy juice C. iced drink D. red vegetable
E
“It hurts me more than you.” And “This is for your own good .” are what my mother used to say years ago when I had to learn French, clean my room, stay home and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them computers, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on holiday.
Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, come to know that we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students--“so passive” and believes their passivity has something to do with television. “We’re talking about a generation children who have never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will do it for them. Instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes great energy to say no to a child.”
Yes, it’s time for parents to end their holidays and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.
71. When the writer was a child, his mother_____.
A. was strict with him B. took a let-alone policy
C. offered him enough time for play D. didn’t take good care of him
72. By “the permissive period in education” the writer means a time_____.
A. when every child can be educated
B. when everything can be taught at school
C. when children are permitted to receive education
D. when children are permitted to do what they wish to
73. Now children are becoming less active in their studies mainly because_____.
A. they have to do housework B. they watch TV too often
C. they have little time for play D. the homework is too difficult for them
74. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Today’s children are quite different from those 15 years ago.
B. Children should be encouraged to do what they can do.
C. Computers are of great help to children in their studies.
D. It is a bad thing for children to depend on their parents too much.
75. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Parents should leave their children alone.
B. Parents should leave the teaching to the teachers.
C. Parents should always say no to their children.
D. Parents should care for their children’s studies.

Computers in China
According to a recent investigation, about 30% of the city families have computers. Besides, many village people are more and more interested in computers and some of them even have bought computers. About 70% of the parents bought computers for their children to study, and some for their work. And even some people bought them for entertainment. The fact how the middle school students use the computers really surprises us. Only about 30% of them use computers to find out useful information. About 60% of them use computers to chat with other people on the Internet. What is worse, about 60% use computers to play games and 20% use computers to watch VCDs or listen to music. In my opinion, we should make better use of our best invention—computers.
