Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring 16 the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life 17 in the ocean.
In 1934 the scientist William Beebe 18 3,000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10,330 feet. In 1960 his son Jean dived to a 19 of 35,800 feet.
All these early divers were deep. But the divers could not stay down 20 . They 21 back up to the surface 22 a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study 23 below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman 24 keep man down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to s depth of 90 feet for a week.
Now scientists are 25 even better equipment. 26 this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days 27 even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau 28 a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then in 1964 he set up 29 station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station 30 without help from the surface.
Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor 31 the Virgin Islands. In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks. Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory. Next 32 other teams of men. All were there to 33 the ocean depths and to make plans for the use of its resources. Scientists 34 enough mineral, vegetable, and animal wealth there to 35 food for the entire world.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brine power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter.
This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changes by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.” Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the age of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “ Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
38. The underlined word “ bilingual” probably means________.
A. a researcher on language learning
B. a second language learner
C. a person who can speak two languages

A trip to Mars
By now, a rocket will have set off on its 35 million mile trip to Mars and scientists must be waiting anxiously for the results. The rocket will be traveling for six months before it reaches the planet. It contains a number of scientific instruments, including a television camera. Any pictures that are taken will have to travel for three minutes before they reach the earth. If the pictures are successful, they may solve a number of problems about Mars and provide information about the markings(条纹)on its surface which, nearly 100 years ago, the astronomer, Schiaparelli, thought to be canals.
It will be a long time before any landing on Mars can be attempted. This will only be possible when scientists have learnt a lot more about the atmosphere that surrounds the planet. If a satellite can one day be put into orbit round Mars, scientists will be able find out a great deal. An interesting suggestion for measuring the atmosphere around Mars has been put forward. A rubber ball containing a radio transmitter(无线电发报机)could be dropped from a satellite so that it would fall towards the surface of the planet. The radio would signal the rate at which the ball was slowed down and scientists would be able to calculate how dense the atmosphere is. It may even be possible to drop a capsule(容器)containing scientific instruments on to the planet’s surface. Only when a great deal more information has been obtained, will it be possible to plan a manned trip to Mars.
41. How soon can scientists expect to receive nay information concerning the nature of the surface of Mars?
A. Within a year of the rocket’s departure form earth
B. Not until a landing has been attempted
C. As soon as a radio transmitter has been dropped from a satellite
D. When certain scientific instruments have been landed on the planet
42. What might prevent scientists from trying to land men on Mars?
A. The discovery that Schiaperelli’s “canals” are not in fact canals
B. The failure of the plan to drop a ball containing a radio transmitter
C. Having obtained sufficient information from a satellite in orbit
D. Proof that its atmosphere lacks certain elements vital to man’s survival
43. Having successfully dropped the rubber ball, scientists would then calculate how dense the atmosphere is by________.
A. directing the ball towards the planet’s surface
B. slowing the ball down to a rate which could then be measured
C. measuring the rate at which the ball was falling
D. dropping another capsule with scientific instruments on to the surface
44. The picture will take three minutes ______ to the earth.
A. as well B. of travel C. on traveling D. to travel
45. With sufficient scientific information, a manned trip to Mars should be________.
A. obtainable B. potential C. considerable D. feasible

Listen carefully, working people. We would like to introduce you something that could save your precious time and money! Best of all, it is free!
It’s “no”.
What do you ask? We’ll say it again, “no”.
Sweet and simple “no”.
Say “no” in your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears.
“ Saying no to others means ,you see, saying yes to yourself,” said C. Leslie Charles, a professional speaker from East Lansing, Michigan.
“ Time is precious. People are spending money to buy time. And yet we are willing to give up our time because we can’t say no.”
Charles, a famous writer, said people who always say “yes” need to say “no” without guilt or fear of punishment.
“ I would rather have someone give me a loving no than an obligated(强制)yes, ” she said.
Susie Watson says she feels “no” obligation to give an explanation when she says “no” either socially or professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? “Not at all,” said Watson, who is director of advertising and public relations at Timex Corp in Middlebury, Conneticut. “Most people are afraid of saying no… My advice is to say yes only if you don’t mean no.”
Watson said “no” is the most effective weapon against wasting time. “ Every year there are more demands on you time… Other people are happy to use your time,” Watson said. Time saving appears to be “no’s” greatest friend.
“No” can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. “No” may even take you further in the business world than “Yes”.
“No” is power and strength. “No” now seems completely correct. “Saying no isn’t easy. But finally it’s greatly liberating,” Charles said. But, he added, a “no” project needs to be worked on every day because it is hard to change long-term habit.
But, he also warns, “Don’t go to extremes. Don’t find yourself saying no to everything. In return you should learn to hear no.”
46. The sentence “saying no to others means you are saying yes to yourself” means________.
A. you can have more time to play with others
B. you needn’t care about other’s feeling if you are happy
C. you are selfish and treat others rudely
D. you can deal with your business as you have planned
47. When you say no to others you should say it in a ________.
A. secret way B. polite way C. proud way D. guilty way
48. In Watson’s opinion, people can save much time on condition that_________.
A. they say “no” at a suitable time B. they say “no” as much as possible
C. they are afraid of saying “no” D. they make others angry at them
49. What does the sentence “saying no isn’t easy” mean?
A. It is difficult to change one’s language. B. It is difficult to refuse others’ demands.
C. It is difficult to say “no” correctly. D. It is difficult to find a person to say no to.
50. If a person says “no” to everything, the result he or she receives may be that he or she ________.
A. enjoys a wonderful life B. makes a lot of money
C. faces difficulty in life D. forgets to say “yes” in the end
