One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that, ”and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that. ”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store (杂货铺 ) in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (箱子). Then he related an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work.

The Manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees inspecting (examining)some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely scolded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.

  B. would like to tell people never to be fooled by an egg sale

  C. has forgiven the manager for what he did to him fifteen years ago

D. expects the woman to say sorry to him for the mistake she made

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point, the woman asked: "So, how have you been?" And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old —replied. "Frankly, I've been feeling a little depressed (sad and discouraged) lately.''

This incident stuck in my mind because it proved my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed”(sad and discouraged) until we were in high school.

The sign of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike any more. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on inborn biological conditions, but also on social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another is usually related to learning the secrets of the new one. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret-showing machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加区分地), to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more lively moving pictures.  Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information which children get. Reading needs improving step by step. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

 72. According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.

A. a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child

B. something hardly to be expected in a young child

C. a sure sign of children's mental development

D. a mental scale present in all humans, including children

73. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ________.

A. through contact with society B. gradually and under guidance

 C. naturally and by biological ability D. through contact to social information

74. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?

A. It enables children to gain more social information.

B. It develops children's interest in reading and writing.

C. It helps children to memorize and practice more.

D. It can control what children are to learn.

75. What does the author think of the change in today’s children?

A. He feels amused by their pre-mature behavior.

B. He thinks it is a thing worthy of notice.

C. He considers it a positive development.

D. He seems to be upset about it.

Many of the earth’s plants and animals have already died out, and a hundred species become endangered every day. If nothing is done, we may find ourselves alone on the earth.

Wild animals live in forests which are being destroyed by people. As a result, the animals are losing their habitats. Without the trees, the animals are short of food. And many animals are dying out because of pollution.

I suggest that measures be taken to protect wildlife. The government should keep people from destroying forests and shut down the factories which pollute rivers and air. I think more wildlife centers should also be built.
