There is a common belief among parents that school are ho longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority (优先) it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling.
If spelling becomes the only point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will write only words within his spelling range (范围). That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: “This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes.” It may have been a sharp criticism(批评) of the pupils technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted (略过) to read me composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of me child’s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had entered on me child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with me presentation would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement

Few students would dream of getting a job as a shoeshiner working along the street. College students, in their own eyes and in me eyes of the public, are traditionally seen as God's chosen people. They are expected to get at least a proper job, if not working in a high-income, white-collar position.
Cai Yong’s decision to work as a shoeshiner shocked not only his parents, but his girl friend.
It’s right for young graduates to be ambitious. But they have to start in a solid and down-to-earth way, Cai said. Cai is not alone in making such a choice. The company has got 12 college students in all. Working as shoeshiner can mean a bright future, Cai said. Cleaning shoes is only part of the company’s business. It is a start for training me young. The business includes all cleaning services, changing from sofas to kitchens.
Not everyone can accept this job choice. Cai’s girl friend left him because she felt ashamed to be with a shoeshiner. And Cai accepted me fact. “This is the price to be paid for a career,” he said.
A former Baifen’s shoeshiner, Zhong Haibo, now works as .a sales manager for a medicine company. Recalling his days as a shoeshiner, the graduate from Nanjing University’s Medical School believes it was precious training for me rest of his life.
“There is nothing I can’t do after working as a shoeshiner,” Zhong said, meaning that hardships in early life are helpful in a future career.

Tens of thousands of couples across the United State are racing to get married by April 30. This is the result of a new law that makes illegal immigrants(移民) legal if they marry by then.
The law has sent marriages rising by 50 percent to 300 percent this year in immigrant-rich Los Angeles, Houston and New York. The new law, passed in the last days of the Clinton administration, contains a large number of measures to help immigrants and their loved ones become legal.
Critics say it also bring many marriage frauds(诈骗). A key aspect allows immigrant to look for houses while remaining in the USA-if they are married to a citizen or legal resident (居民) and submit applications (提出申请) by April 30. After the date, applications will have to return to their native countries to deal with their paperwork—a requirement that could take as long as 10 years.
Demand for marriage licenses (许可证) in Manhattan this year jumped from 100 a day to more than 300. The Los Angeles County registrar-recorder’s office supplied 12,997 marriage licenses during January and February, a 59 percent increase over last year.
Critics say me new law encourages false marriage. There are a lot of frauds as people rush to make use of this window. In the past, cases citizens or legal residents were paid US $ 10, 000 or more to many illegal immigrants in which immigration is concluded may be investigated for as long as two years after me lows.
“It’s not worth me risk to attempt an illegal marriage,” says INS spokesman Bill Strassberger.
