第三部分:阅读理解 共两节,满分40

第一节 选择题(共17小题,每小题2分,满分34分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Remember when a trip to the supermarket was nothing more than a boring thing requiring little or no specialized knowledge? You could send your kids into a cart while you did shopping. You always bought the same brands, usually the brands your mother bought. You didn't know about unit pricing, and furthermore, you didn't care. It never occurred to you to read the labels on anything. After all, you'd bought these things a hundred times.
But now, I really look on those days with a feeling of yearn (怀旧). How innocent(清白的) we were! How carefree were those trips to the supermarket. No worries. Today a trip to the supermarket is filled with social influence. Every time I buy pork chops I think about the years I'm shaving from my life. I keep a careful eye on the freshness date and examine the tamper - proof packaging. I am a victim of that most dangerous social disease: shoppers' panic.
I didn't realize how serious my condition had become until the last time I needed laundry soap. It seemed simple enough. Just run into the market, grab a box of the old reliable and pay for it. I hadn't planned on discovering Ecover, a new brand of laundry soap. It sat quietly on the shelf right next to my old reliable. "Healthy, gentle but effective. "My respect for it deepened with each new claim as I read the entire package. Then I looked at the price: $ 5.69 for 2 pounds. $ 5.69 ! I cast a quick glance at the old reliable, still on sale for $ 1.39.
Six bucks for laundry soap! These people must be crazy! Who's going to pay six bucks for laundry soap? It's not as though I can't afford it. See, it's concentrated use less, get more. BUT SIX BUCKS! And the box is made from recycled materials. . . . This act went on for a solid half hour, after which I left the shelf without any soap at all.
Surely the meat department is most threatening place. Remember when protein was good for you? That's all over. Every bite you take kills you. I won't even mention meat's moral influence.
When all is said and done, we still must eat. I gather up my healthy cooking oil and my recycled paper towels and head to the checkout counter.

56. In the first paragraph, the author mainly wants to tell us that in the past________.
A. it was convenient to go shopping in the supermarket
B. shopping in the supermarket was very boring
C. we never read the labels of commodities in the supermarket
D. we used to buy the same brands of products in the supermarket

57. Recalling the old days' shopping in the supermarket, the author thinks it was_____
A. pleasant B. fresh C. dangerous D. crazy

58.Eating pork chops will mean that ______.
A. you must have a shave after that      B. you should think of the old days
C. you are killing yourself slowly D. you must go on diet after that

59. In the supermarket, the author was attracted by a new brand of laundry soap for its _____.
A. price B. claims C. package     D. shape

60. What's the author's problem?
A. She is too poor to afford the new brands in the supermarket.
B. She cannot not find the right laundry soap in the supermarket.
C. She has to use the most healthy things because of her poor health.
D. She is greatly affected by social influences.

B

Everyone agrees that it’s necessary to reduce carbon

emissions (排放物) around the world. There is less agreement

over exactly how nations should go about achieving a more

carbon - free planet. Thus, the environmental equivalent:

cap – and – trade carbon emissions, or place a carbon tax on

all users?

With cap – and – trade programs, governments limit the level of carbon produced by an industry. Companies that hold their emissions below the limit can sell their remaining allowance on a carbon market, while companies that go beyond their limit must purchase credits on that market. Carbon taxes are more straightforward: a set tax rate is placed on the consumption of carbon with the idea that raising the price will encourage industries and individuals to consume less. At the moment, cap – and – trade has the upper hand, but doesn’t defeat the tax just yet.

Supporters of the tax argue that a cap – and – trade system would be too difficult to administer – and too easily gamed by industries looking to sidestep emissions caps. Cap – and – trade advocates contradict that like all other flat taxes, a carbon collection would relatively burden lower – income families, who spend a greater percentage of their income on energy than rich households.

So which system will have a larger effect on carbon consumption? A 10% carbon tax might reduce the demand for carbon about 5 % or less, according to an analysis by the Carbon Tax Center, an environmental advocacy(倡导者) group. That may not be enough. Businesses and governments haven’t figured out how the two competing systems can work together, but in the end, the world may need both.

61.The passage focuses on .

A.programs of collecting taxes B.systems of reducing carbon emissions

C.reasons for reducing carbon emissions D.contradictions between the two systems

62.According to the cap – and – trade program, companies      .

A.are forbidden to produce carbon emissions

B.are allocated the same amount of carbon consumption

C.can sell their remaining allowance within their limits

D.can sell the extra amount of carbon at a higher price

63.Carbon taxes work by       .

A.burdening well – off families      B.encouraging industries to consume carbon

C.raising the price for carbon consumption

D.limiting the carbon consumption of industries only

64.We can learn from the passage      .

A.carbon taxes are difficult to carry out

B.cap – and – trade plays a greater role at present

C.cap – and – trade will be preferable in the future

D.carbon taxes will be preferable in the future

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.

Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper. The Beldon Post:

FIRE AT SEABREEZE

Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors: “Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire for five years.

The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:

   ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE

Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said, “An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.

What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel last August: that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes, we know that firemen went to the hotel.

Asian athletes have had a spare time in the first two days of the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England. But Chinese hurdler (跨栏运动员) Liu Xiang surprised everyone by taking the bronze medal in the men’s 60-meter hurdles.

Liu became the first Chinese male athlete to get a world indoor medal in the 18-year history of the championship and was the only Asian medalist this time.

“Karaoke (卡拉OK)! That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to get a big group of my friends together and sing. I love both Western and Chinese music but especially Michael Jackson,” said Liu after clocking 7.52 seconds in the final to take his place on the podium (领奖台).

“Frankly speaking, I didn’t think I was in the shape to win a medal,” Liu said. “On my arrival here, my aim was just to fight my way into the final. After I did that, I thought I might just get into the top six. I knew British hurdler Colin Jackson was going to be here and he’s the world record holder indoors and out.”

“There was also Cuba’s reigning (统治的) Olympic champion Anier Garcia and Allen Johnson, from the United States.” It was Johnson, the reigning world outdoor champion, who was successful in 7.47 seconds with Garcia second and Jackson finished back in fifth.

Now Liu will never underestimate his chances again and is aiming for glory in Paris later this year.

“There is the World Championship outdoors in the summer and I have now got to think that I can get a medal. I can never again think that I can’t get a medal,” he said. Liu’s success here marks his rapid transition into the senior ranks.

“The university gives me a lot of flexibility. My courses are very easy and the teachers are very helpful,” said Liu.

第二节 简答题(共3小题,满分6分)

阅读下面短文,根据第73至第75小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

Clothes play a critical part in the conclusions we reach by providing clues to who people are,who they are not,and who they would like to be.They tell us a good deal about the wearer’s background, personality, status, mood, and social outlook.

Since clothes are such an important source of social information, we can use them to manipulate people’s impression of us.Our appearance assumes particular significance in the initial phases of interaction that is likely to occur. An elderly middle-class man or woman may be alienated(疏远) by a young adult who is dressed in all unconventional manner, regardless of the person’s education, background,or interest.

People tend to agree on what certain types of clothes mean.Adolescent girls can easily agree on the lifestyles of girls who wear certain outfits, including the number of boyfriends they likely have had and whether they smoke or drink.Newscasters,or the announcers who read the news on TV,are considered to be more convincing, honest, and competent when they are dressed conservatively. And college students who view themselves as taking an active role in their interpersonal relationships say they are concerned about the costumes they must wear to play these roles successfully. Moreover, many of us can relate instances in which the clothing we wore changed the way we felt about ourselves and how we acted.Perhaps you have used clothing to gain confidence when you anticipated a stressful situation, such as a job interview or a court appearance.

In the workplace, men have long well-defined precedents and role models for achieving success. It has been otherwise for women.A good many women in the business world are uncertain about the appropriate mixture of “masculine” and “feminine” attributes they should convey by their professional clothing. The variety of clothing alternatives to women has also been greater than that available for men.Male administrators tend to judge women more favorably for managerial positions when women display less “feminine” grooming-shorter hair, moderate use of make-up,and plain tailored clothing. As one male administrator confessed, “An attractive woman is definitely going to get a longer interview, but she won’t get a job.”

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “moderate ”.

74.According to the passage, how do certain types of clothing help young adults? (回答词数不超过8个)

75.What is the passage mainly about? (回答词数不超过6个)

Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean .Now they are exploring below the surface ,too .They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean.

In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3,000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel .In 1935 August Piccard 10,330 feet IN 1960 his son jean dived to a depth of 35,800 feet

All these early dives were deep . But the divers couldn’t stay down for very long .They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds .Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface .Gradually they succeeded.

Now scientists are developing even better equipment .With this new equipment ,men can stay below the surface for days or even for weeks. In 1962 Cousteau ,a Frenchman ,was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week .Then in 1964 he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea .This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface.

Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea .The United States has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor off the Virgin Islands .In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks .Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory .Next came other teams of men .All were there exploring the ocean depths and making plans for the use  of its resources .Scientists now have found many ocean minerals ,vegetables and animal wealth there to provide food for the entire world
