  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

40 years ago the idea of disabled people doing sport was never heard of. But when the yearly games for the disabled were started at Stoke Mandeville, England in 1948 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, the situation began to change.

Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who had been driven to England in 1939 from Nazi Germany, had been asked by the British government to set up an injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London. His ideas about treating injuries included sport for the disabled.

In the first games just two teams of injured soldiers took part. The next year, 1949, five teams took part. From those beginnings, things have developed fast. Teams now come from abroad to Stoke Mandeville every year. In 1960 the first Olympics for the Disabled were held in Rome, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games. Now, every four years the Olympic Games for the Disabled are held, if possible, in the same place as the normal Olympic Games, although they are organized separately. In other years Games for the Disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville. In the1984 wheelchair Olympic Games, 1064 wheelchair athletes from about 40 countries took part. Unfortunately, they were held at Stoke Mandeville and not in Los Angeles, along with the other Olympics.

The Games have been a great success in helping the progress of international friendship and understanding, and in proving that being disabled does not mean you can’t enjoy sport. One small source (来源) of disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games, however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic Committee (委员会) to include disabled events at the Olympic Games for the able-bodied. Perhaps a few more years are still needed to persuade those fortunate enough not to be disabled to understand that their disabled fellow athletes should be included.

56. The first games for the disabled were held ______ after Sir Ludwig Guttmann arrived in England.

   A. 40 years B. 21 years C. 10 years D. 9 years

57. Besides Stoke Mandeville, surely the games for the disabled were once held in _______.

Gary Finkle was seriously hurt in a swimming-pool accident seven years ago. A heavy-set, bearded man of 27, he is one of thousands of Americans who have lost actually all feeling and movement from their shoulders down. He lives with his wife, Micky, and a female monkey named Jo outside the village of Andes, New York.

Gary takes part in an unusual organization called Helping Hands: Simian Aides (猴子助手) for the disabled. The organization supplies the disabled with trained monkeys that reduce the disabled person’s dependence on family, friends and hired servants.

Using his mouth, Gary controls a small laser (激光)pointer fixed on his wheel-chair. With it, he directs Jo to change books or the tape-recorder. She brings him drinks from a refrigerator (冰箱) and clears away empty containers.

When asked, Jo will fetch the remote control (遥控器) for the TV and place it on Gary’s working table where he can operate it with his mouthstick. This mouthstick can be used for practically everything: turning the pages of a book, dialing the telephone, changing channels on TV, working at a typewriter or computer. If Gary’s mouthstick drops to the floor, Jo will pick it up and gently put it again into his mouth.

“I can’t imagine living without her,” Gary says. He will always need human assistance for such things as getting in and out of bed, bathing or changing his clothes. For a small town, Manhattan, Kansas has some big surprise. And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly family atmosphere.

The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the brightly lit restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.

Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she’s planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.

Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Your best friend is a good pair of shoes. She paid fifty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She’s discovered something else too. You don’t have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.

“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan”, she explains. “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can’t make up their minds. They look down the menu and say ‘What do you suggest?’ So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say ‘Not very’, ‘I suggest the salad bar, with soup, salad, bread and a fruit Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well, It’s very nice. Really good value.”

Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least she’s learning too much about people. She’ll probably make a good animal doctor, but if she finds she doesn’t like it after all, she can always become a psychiatrist (精神病专家) instead.

(Text10)

Harry came to his mother one morning while she was having her breakfast, and said to her, “No one at my school likes me, mother. The teachers don’t, and the children don’t. Even the cleaners and the bus drivers hate me.”

“Well, Harry.” His mother answered, “Perhaps you aren’t very nice to them. If a few people don’t like a person, he or she may not be responsible for that, but if a lot of people don’t, there is usually something wrong, and that person really needs to change.”

“I’m too old to change.” Harry said, “I don’t want to go to school.”

“Don’t be silly. Harry .”his mother said, going to the garage to get the car out. “You have to go. You’re quite well, and you still have a lot of things to learn. And besides that, you’re headmaster of the school.”
