SYDNEY: As they sat sharing sweets beside a swimming pool in 1999, Shane Gould and Jessicah Schipper were simply getting along well, chatting about sport, life and anything else that came up.

Yet in Sydney next month, they will meet again by the pool, and for a short time the friends will race against each other in the 50-meter butterfly (蝶泳) in the Australian championships at Homebush Bay.

Gould, now a 47- year- old mother of four, has announced she will be making a return to the swimming pool to attend the one event, having set a qualifying (合格的) time of 30.32 seconds in winning gold at last year’s United States Masters championships. Her comeback comes 32 years after she won three golds at the Munich Olypics.

Schipper, now a 17- year- old from Brisbane with a bright future of going to Athens for her first Olympics, yesterday recalled (回忆) her time with Gould five years ago.

“I was at a national youth camp on the Gols Coast and Shame had come along to talk to us and watch us train,” Schipper explained. “It seemed as if we had long been good friends. I don’t know why. We just started talking and it went from there.”

“She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp, she told us stories about what it was like at big meets like the Olympics and what it’s like to be on an Australian team. It was really interesting.”

Next time, things will be more serious. “I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the Nationals, so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould,” said Schipper, who took second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly at last year’s National Championships.

Sometime in the next century, the familiar early-morning newspaper on the front porch(走廊) will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper , it will read to you. You will get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute (散布) stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer file if you like. These are among the predictions (预言) from communications experts working on the newspapers of the future. Many a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “ being a writer ” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “ You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “ not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor—paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿人), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

47.. The passage is meant to____________________.

  A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience

  B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer

  C. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame

  D. encourage young people to pursue a writing career

48.. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?

  A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.

  B. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.

  C. He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.

  D. He found his dream would never come true.

49.. “…people who die wondering. What if?” (Para.3, Line 4 ) refers to “ those _____________”.

  A. who think too much of the dark side of life

  B. who regret giving up their career halfway

  C. who think a lot without making a decision

  D. who are full of imagination even upon death

50.. “ Shadowland” in the last sentence refer to _______________.

  A. the wonderland one often dreams about

  B. the bright future that one is looking forward to

  C. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached

  D. a world that exists only in one’s imagination
