We're with the children every day.Listening to and encouraging them.We also advise parents, educate the public and send doctors overseas to study new cancer treatments. Our funding  has brought better equipment to the wards. And paid for special flats where children can recover in a hygienic, yet cheerful home setting.

We want to do even more. But to do it,we need your support. It will be money well spent. Many people already know the diamond is the hardest natural stone in the world. Diamonds can only be cut by other diamonds. However , they can be broken because diamonds are made by organized sheets of carbon that formed underground. This is the reason why diamonds have flat faces or sides.

Diamonds are sold by weight in carats. One carat equals 200 milligrams(0.007ounces). On average, diamond mines around the world find 90 million carats of rough diamonds every year. Half of these diamonds are not very good, so they can only be used as industrial diamonds for machines and machine parts.

Most diamonds on the market today come from Australia. Zaire is the second largest producer of diamonds, followed by Russia and South Africa.

The largest diamond in the world , the Cullinan diamond , was found in 1905. It was actually found in South Africa, but because this country was a British colony, the diamond was presented to King Edward VII of England. The diamond was then cut into several pieces to be used in the crown jewels.

The original Cullinan diamond weighed 3,106 carats. In comparison, the second largest diamond in the world, the Excelsior diamond, only weighs about 996 carats.

The largest diamond cut from the Cullinan diamond is the star of Africa. The cut diamond weighs 530.2 carats. Eight other large diamonds were cut from the Cullinan ,and these diamonds vary in size from 317 carats to 4 carats . 96 smaller diamonds were also cut from what remained of the Cullinan diamond . Thanks to the constant cutting done on the diamond, almost 60%of the original Cullinan diamond has been lost.

Have you ever heard an echo of your voice?

An echo is a reflected sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall, with nothing on the walls. Then sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. Then shout. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called “echoes”.

We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. It doesn’t travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard.

Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the tube to your ear.

A megaphone works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a bean which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.

We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for example. Among the animals, bats and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near them.
