Macao,also called Macau,is on the western side of the Pearl River entrance, at the head of which is the Chinese port of Guangdong,and it stands opposite Hong Kong, which is on the eastern side of the entrace.It is made up of a small narrow peninsula(半岛)sticking out from Guangdong province and includes the islands of Taipa and Coloane,with a total area of 17 square km.The city of Macao takes up almost the entire peninsula.The name comes from the Chinese Amango,or "Bay of the Goddess for A-ma".The total population in 1998 was about 429,152.
　Both the peninsula and the islands are made up of small rock hills surrounded by limited areas of flatland.No part of Macao is of any great heigtht;the highest point, 174m, is on the island of Coloane.There are no permanet(永久的)rivers,and water either is collected during rains or is brought into from mainland China.
　Macao lies just within the tropic(热带). Each year four-fifths of Macao's total rain-fall of between 1,020 and 2,540 mm falls within the summer rainy season,when the south-west monsoon(西南季风)blows from April to ptember.Besides being rainy,the summer months are also hot,wet and unpleasant.Winters,on the other hand,can be delightful.
