This August has seen athletes doing their sweaty part in the "Good Luck Beijing" sports events. Some foreign athletes have commented on the passion of Chinese spectators(观众).

Not all the spectators, however, came out looking exactly good. Girls holding umbrellas on beach volleyball stands. Spectators crying sharply during the hockey matches. These can be unintended disturb. To avoid them, we'd keep in mind some special manners:

Beach volleyball

1. Dress down for beach volleyball. It's also a good time to show off your colorful top and sexy shorts.

2. Use protective cream for your skin. Wear sunglasses and bring something to drink. But don't carry something that blocks others' view.

3. Look all you want at the body shapes around you, but save some attention for the players' skills.

Archery & shooting

1. Sit at the back or on either side of the field. For safety's sake, do not risk out of there.

2. Above all, keep quiet during the match. Put your cellphone on vibrate or turn it off.

3. Do not use the flash on your camera, because it can disturb the athletes.

4. When the athletes are aiming at the target, keep your voice down.

4. If you easily get nervous, bring some snacks. Keep your mouth moving to calm you down.

Cycling & marathon

1. Spectators should keep off the track. Control your pets.

2. Cyclists or runners might look tired, sweaty and thirsty, but, do not hand them a bottle of water, a cool towel or anything else. Any help from spectators can disqualify(剥夺资格)an athlete.

3. Again, if a cyclist or runner falls, do not rush over to help. The best thing to do is to contact medical personnel.

Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain's most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe——the business tribe.

You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn't wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.

This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.

"Ties offer a point of indifference," says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers." They give a chance to say something about their own personality."

So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.

Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to rare amongst the new bread of entrepreneurs (创业者) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people——but not the people wearing ties.

Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the Western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Kennedy never wore a hat——in fact his nickname was "hatless Jack". Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to, either. Hats simply vanished across the Western world. Perhaps "tieless Tony" (UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as "hatless Jack".

55. In Britain, ties were first used as a sign to show a person's ________.

A. personality B. social position C. wearing style D. favorite hobby

56. In the business world, wearing a tie was necessary because ________.

A. it showed you used your brain B. it showed you got a good salary

C. it showed you were an employer D. it showed you were well-trained

57. The writer may hold the opinion that ________.

A. Blair is the best leader in the world B. Kennedy is the best leader in the world

C. millions of people will go to work without a tie D. people will wear hats instead of ties

58. The underlined word "vanished" in this passage may mean ________.

A. sold B. washed     C. appeared     D. disappeared

C

People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It's something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it's a waste of time. I don't mean that we should do nothing about it; quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.

Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往) with different people every night, in front of a national audience. Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be, not just a talk show host, but a legend (传奇) among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.

I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感)and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.

59. In the author's view, shyness can be explained as ________.

A. a disease that can be easily cured      B. a not very normal mental condition

C. an emotional disability          D. something we pick up after birth

60. Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?

A. He has delt with shyness very successfully.

B. He has done away with his shyness carefully.

C. He is described as a hero in some legend books.

D. He failed to become a good talk show host.

61. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was ________.

A. proud all the time B. impolite when young

C. shy in her early years           D. close to Jane Fonda

62. The author thinks that our shyness is there because ________.

A. we are not open enough          B. we don't feel secure at heart

C. we try to reach out to others all the time D. we lack some social skills

D

The Italian island of Sardinia recently lost its oldest citizen. Family members say Antonio Todde died in his sleep early this month. Mr Todde was 112 years old. He was less than three weeks away from his 113th birthday. Record-keeping experts say he was the world's oldest man.

His long life and that of other very old Sardinians are the subjects of a scientific project called Akea. Luca Deiana of Sassari University is directing the study. He says the name Akea comes from a traditional greeting on Sardinia. It means “health and life for 100 years." Professor Deiana and his team started to collect information for the study in 1997, They identified(确定) more than 220 Sardinians who were centenarians——100 years old or older. His team required three documents to confirm a person’s age. They were a government birth record, a church record and a statement by a close family member.

The Akea study has produced two major findings. The first is Sardinia's extremely high number of centenarians. The island has about 135 centenarians for every one million people. In other Western countries, the average is about seventy-five centenarians for every one million people. The second major finding was an unusual rate of female to male centenarians. Sardinia has two women centenarians for every male centenarian. In central Sardinia there are equal numbers of female and male centenarians.

Studies in other parts of the world have shown a much higher percentage of female centenarians. The Akea study collected information about the health and diet of about 140 of the centenarians. About ninety percent of those in the study also agreed to provide blood for scientific testing. The study team hopes to identify genetic material in the blood that can be linked to successful aging. Study leaders say there is no single reason why people on Sardinia live so long. They believe the answer is a combination of genetic and environmental conditions.

63. Centenarians are people who are ________ years old.

A. 200 B. 100 C. 300 D. 400

64. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

A. Why people on Sardinia live so long. B. The world's oldest woman.

C. The world's oldest man. D. A scientific study on centenarians.

65. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Other parts of the world have a higher rate of female centenarians than Sardinia.

B. There are equal numbers of female and male centenarians on Sardinia.

C. Sardinia has an unusual rate of male to female centenarians.

D. There are about seventy-five centenarians for every one million people on Sardinia.

Chat rooms and messaging can be great fun, but remember, you never really know who you are talking to online. It could be someone trying to trick you, some kind of weirdo(古怪的人),or someone really dangerous. Here are some tips to help you keep safe:

● Never use your real name in chat rooms—pick a special online nickname.

● Never tell anyone personal things about yourself or your family—like your address or

telephone number,or the school or clubs you go to.That goes for sending them photos as well (that way if you don’t want to hear from them again, you only have to log off.) Remember, even if somebody tells you about themselves, never tell them things about you.

If you arrange to meet up with someone you’ve only spoken to once, remember that they

might not be who they said they were,so only meet people in public places and take along an adult—they should do this too, because they don’t know who you really are either!

●Never respond to nasty(淫秽的)or rude messages, and never send any either! If you feel

suspicious or uncomfortable about the way a conversation is going,or if it’s getting really personal, save a record of it and stop the conversation. That way you can show someone and ask what they think.

● Be careful with any email attachments or links that people send you, they might contain

nasty images,or computer “viruses” that could ruin your PC.So if____________, don’t open it.
