Now we talk about ways the government plans to follow foreign students inside the country. One way is by using a new computer security system called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System or SEVIS. All the schools will enter information about their foreign students into this eomputer network.
SEVIS will link about seventy-four thousand American colleges, universities and technical
schools to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (移民归化局). It will give the I-N-S and the
Justice Department (司法部) detailed information about each student. The government will be able
to tell if the student is attending classes or if the student leaves school. The government will also use the system to let the schools know that a student has entered the country. The new rules require
schools to tell the I-N-S within thirty days if the student is attending classes.
SEVIS is one of a number of ways that government officials are getting more control over foreign students. In early 2002, officials said they might not approve requests from foreigners who want to study some kinds of science or technology subjects. These include subjects that could provide knowledge about how to make dangerous weapons. And the Justice Department has begun a new system to follow foreign visitors entering and leaving the country.
The program involves fingerprinting a small percentage of foreign visitors. The fingerprints will be studied to see if they are the same as those of known criminals or terrorists. The fingerprinted visitors also must tell the government from time to time where they are living and what they are doing in the United States. They must also let officials know when they leave the country.
56. The SEVIS aims at _____.
A. protecting the US from the terrorists
B. recording students'school life in the US
C. providing the safety for the foreign students
D. helping foreign students enter the US universities
57. "A small percentage of foreign visitors" in the last paragraph refers to _____.
A. those who come from the Middle East
B. those who study science and technology
C. those who are likely to be criminals or terrorists
D. those who know how to make danerous weapons
58. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. it’s easier to enter the USA
B. many foreign students are terrorists
C. some of the terrorists may enter the Us as students

In the 120Os, an Italian mathematician named Fibonacci read AI-Kwarismi's book. At that
time in Italy, most people did math with Roman numerals. Soon Fibonaeci wrote his own book about the "Hindu-Arabic" number system. He taught people that the Hindu-Arabic number system was much easier than the Roman sustem.
Fibonaacci also discovered an interesting number pattern. Can you tell what it is? 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21...Each number in the series is the sum of the two numbers before it.
During the Renaissance (文艺复兴) in the 1400s and 150Os, Europe experienced a time of
rebirth. Many new discoveries in the areas of science, math, and the arts were made. Scientists invented telescopes. Artists painted in new ways. Composers created new kinds of music. There was also a renewed interest in mathematical theories and concepts. Some of that interest came from the development of commercial activities, which created a need for math.
During this time, one German artist named Albrecht became interested in magic squares. A
magic square is a grid (格子) of numbers in which each column, row, and diagonal (对角线) adds up to the same number. People believed that magic squares had special powers that could protect people from sickness.
Another great European mathematician was Isaac Newton, an Englishman. Many people consider his discoveries to be the beginning of modem math. In addition to being a mathematician,
Newton was also an inventor. Like one of his idols, Archimedes, he found clever ways to solve problems. One of his most famous inventions was a wooden clock that kept accurate time! As an adult, Newton invented a simple way of solving complicated mathematical problems. He called this method calculus. Newton also tried to explain the motion of the planets in our solar system.
59. Following the number pattern “1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,…..” , the next number is ______.
A. 2b B. 29 C. 34 D. 41
60. Which of the following is a magic square?

For many young people, now is the time of year for job hunting. As everyone knows, CVs are essential (必要的) for this task.
To write the best CV, you must understand what a CV is.
First, a CV is a marketing document used to impress prospective employers. It must, then, appeal to the reader, and give them only what they need to know.
Second, the term CV comes from the Latin" curriculum vitae," which means" the course of a
life. ” A CV then, is a history of yourself, and like all good histories, it should be based on facts.
Opinions and ideas have no pace on one.
Four categories must be included on all CVs:
1. Personal details
This category includes such essentials as your name, date of birth, address and contact details. It may also include your nationality.
2. Education mad qualifications
In this section you need to consider what parts of your educational history are relevant ( 有关的) to the reader. Obviously, the university (or universities) you went to is relevant, as they are
the qualifications you have or expect to get.
Your primary and secondary schools, however, are irrelevant, as they are part of your distant past.
It is customary in this section to list the information in reverse date order. This is because your recent studies and qualifications are the most relevant to an employer. However, you should provide a brief explanation of your studies and qualifications.
In this section, you can also include details of any major academic prizes you have won.
3. Work experience
In this section, again put your most recent work at the top of the list. As a student, you may
have had any proper jobs yet, but most of you may have work experience or voluntary work.
You may be working as the editor of a college newspaper. That can also be mentioned.
4. Interests and other skills
It is useful to consider this section under three headings: language, computer skills and interest.
Under languages, only list those that you are confident of using at a conversational level--
knowing a few words and phrases is not enough.
Under computer skills, list the important programs that you can use competently. Most of you will be able to use Word and Excel, but some of you may have knowledge of specialized software such as Access, Linux and PageMaker.
In this section also list any serious interests you have. The aim is, again, to show how wellrounded a person you are.
5. Warning
It is important to remember that anything you put on your CV can be the subject of questioning at an interview. So don't lie.
Finally, a word about the layout of your CV. Remember that employers and academics have to
read many of them, so make their lives easier by organizing the information you give neatly. Remember, a good CV is CLEAR, ORGANIZED, EASY TO READ, and above all HONEST.
63. Which of the following expresses the correct meaning of the word "CV" ?
A. A variety of one's life experiences.
B. A kind of marketing document used to appeal to the buyers.
C. Subjects included in a course of study or taught at a particular school, college.
D. A brief description of somebody's earlier career, usually with an application for a job.
64. Your recent studies and qualifications are the most important to an employer, so you are required_____.
A. to provide a brief explanation of your studies
B. to list the information of your primary and secondary school
C. to list every detail of any major academic prizes you have won
D. to put your recent education and qualification at the top of the list
65. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. It is necessary to show that you have wide and varied knowledge.
B. It is wrong to list the language in which you can't communicate with others.
C. It is unnecessary to write down your life experience to be a volunteer or a college editor.
D. This will impress the employers better if you have knowledge of specialized software
besides Word and Excel.
66. What does the underlined word "them" in the last part refer to?
A. CVs. B. Employers. C. Details. D. Qualifications.

laughing, and sleeping.
Several people have been instrumental (起作用的) in the field of psychology. Wilhemm Wundt set up the first psychological lab in Leipzing, Germany, in 1879. Ivan Pavlov, a Russian, is noted for his experiments with dogs in which he studied their reflexes (反射) and reactions. Around
1900, Sigmund Freud stated his theory that people try to hide any memories or thoughts that they believed were not good.
Psychologists should not be confused with psychiatrists. Psychiatrists deal only with mental illness. They are medical doctors who treat people.

The ocean is always moving: waves break on the surface, sea levels rise and fall with the tides, and currents flow below the surface. Although it looks as if the water in a wave is moving across the surface of the ocean, it is not. The water is actually moving up and down. This is why an object on top of a wave will bob up and down, but not move forward.
When a wave reaches the shore, however, the water does move forward. It surges (前进) onto the shore. This is because the "bottom" of the wave drags on the sand and the "top" continues on, crashing onto the shore. This crashing water is called the surf. Most waves are caused by wind blowing across the ocean's surface. The size of a wave depends on how fast and how far the wind blows over the surface and on the depth of the wave. Small winds can cause ripples, while strong winds create large hurricane waves.
Along most shorelines, water levels rise and fall twice a day. These changes, called tides, are caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon. The ocean surface lifts, or bulges (凸出), in two places: on the side of Earth that faces the Moon and on the side of Earth that faces away
from the Moon. Both bulges cause a high tide on nearby shorelines. At the same time that the high
tides occur, low tides occur between the two bulges.
Tides are also affected by the pull of the Sun, although the effect of the Sun is not as great as the effect of the Moon. When the Moon and Sun are lined up with Earth, the combined pull is the strongest, causing the highest high tides and the lowest low tides. These very high and very low tides are called spring tides. Weaker tides, called neap tides, happen when the Moon and the Sun are at right angles to Earth. High tides alternate with low tides. Along most shorelines, a high tide or low tide occurs about every six hours.
72. When the Moon and Sun are lined up with Earth, the tides are called _____.
A. neap tides B. low tides
C. high tides D. spring tides
73. The word "alternate" in the last paragraph means _____.
A. appear suddenly B. bob up and down
C. change or become quickly D. happen or follow one after another
74. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Tides occur twice a day.
B. The effect of the Sun on tides is the greatest.
C. Tides are caused by wind blowing across the ocean's surface.
D. The water in a wave is moving across the surface of the ocean
75. The best title for the passage is _____.
A. The Moving Ocean C. Tides and Waves
B. Ocean and Earth D. Waves and Currents
