“Depend on yourself”is what nature sayes to help yourself.

Dear Abby,

This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years.I need an outside opinion.

I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her hudband and their three dearly loved children—all under the age of 5—and I’m upset with some of their parenting ways.

For example:They lock the doors to their children’s bedrooms at night because “the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them.”If one child gets punished, all three are punished, and if one child says a “naughty”word, all three are given hot sauce in the mouth.

I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand,it is not my aim to interfere(干涉).

                                   Gram

Dear Gram,

Children’s bedroom door should not be locked.Should a flash fire break out,it would be a nightmare.

Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other.

Children who use “naughty”words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth. They should be taught the proper and acceptable words to use instead of the “naughty”words.

A proud father has named his son after a computer software term.

Jon Blake Cusack, from Mocjogam, told local newspapers the US traditional way of adding “Junior”or “Ⅱ” after a boy’s name was too common.

So,when his son was born last week,he decided on the name Jon Blake Cusack 2.0,as if he were a software upgrade.

Mr. Cusack admitted that it took months to persuade his wife,Jamie,to accept the idea.

Mrs Cusack said she asked several friends whether they can accept this name or not.

All the men,she said, felt the name was”cool”.however, her women friends did not think so.”I think the women end up like it,”she said.

“I thought that if they can do it,why can’t we?”he said.

After little Jon version 2.0 was born, Mr. Cusack even sent a celebratory e-mail to the family and friends designed to look as though he and his wife had created new software.

"Where are your bananas?" It seemed like a logical question to ask.For all of my forty trips around the store, bananas were a key item to place in the grocery cart. For the first time I could recall, the banana bin was empty. So I asked a store worker where the bananas were.

"We don't have any,"he replied."We'll be getting some in tomorrow."

It took me a few moments to absorb this information."What do you mean you don't have any?"I thought ."Every store have bananas."True, sometimes they are almost green enough to pass forbent cucumbers(黄瓜).And they occasionally appear to have lost an armwrestling match with a watermelon. But there are always bananas of some sort in the store.

Then it dawned on me just how foolish my expectations were.I live well north of New York City.Even if somebody invented a way to cultivate them in the Great White North,it was early April, and they would not bear fruit at that time of year. For goodness sake, outside the snow was falling and inside I was expecting tropical bananas!

Dear Andrew:

I’m glad to hear about you are coming to China soon.In my opinion, both air travel and train travlel have advantages and disadvantages.

Travelling by air can save time. For example,if you fly from Qingdao to Guangzhou,it takes only two hours. If you take the train, you will get to Guangzhou in 23hours.Also,air travel is more comfortable. The train is usually crowded and you have to sit on your seat for a long time .You will get tired after the long travel. On the other hand train travel also has its advantages.First,it costs only 550 yuan while traveling by air costs 1200 yuan.Besides, you can enjoy the beautiful views outside the window along the way.

Which would you prefer? I’m afraid you have to make your own choice. If you need more information, don’t hesitate to let me know.

 Have a nice journey!

 Yours

 Lihua
