¡¡¡¡Elderly people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to provide as their behaviour can sometimes be irritating(ÄÕÈ˵Ä). If they get excited or upset then they may become more confused and more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary. At the same time it is also important that you don¡¯t make them feel like children.
¡¡¡¡Failing memory makes it very difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. The information has to be constantly repeated to make up for the poor memory. you must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and straightforward(Ò׶®µÄ).

¡¡¡¡Methods of training animals have changed greatly in recent years. Zoo keepers have always had problems getting the animals to leave their cages in order for the cages to be cleaned, and also training them to move indoors when appropriate. Another problem was that many of the large animals became listless and bored. In the last twenty years, scientists have done research on dolphins and whales, training them to obey commands. The scientists found they could get animals to obey by rewarding them with food and affection when they responded correctly.
¡¡¡¡Proper training allows the animals to receive the care they need. It was very difficult to get untrained animals, especially the larger ones, to stay still when they needed medical attention. Now they can be trained, on command, to remain still and even to allow blood samples to be taken and shots administered. All this is accomplished through positive reinforcement, without the use of any force. Affection training, as this process is called, has been used with great success on a wide variety of zoo animals. Animal behavior experts have taught zoo keepers to train bears, tigers, monkeys, and many other species to behave in a way that provides for better animal-keeper interaction. This training also keeps the animals from becoming bored and inactive.
Although some people proclaim(Ç´Ôð) that this training is inhumance and cruel to animals, results have shown that captive(ÁÔ»ñµÄ)animals who previously were not doing well flourish under the new training procedures.

¡¡¡¡We have all experienced days when everything goes wrong. A day may begin well enough, but suddenly everything seems to get out of control. What invariably happens is that a great number of things choose to go wrong at precisely the same moment. It is as if a single unimportant event set up a chain of reactions. Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time. The telephone rings and this marks the prelude (ÐòÄ»)to an unforeseen£¨ÒâÁÏÖ®ÍâµÄ£©series of catastrophes (´ó»ö). While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the table-cloth off the table, smashing half your best crockery£¨ÌÕÆ÷£©and cutting himself in the process. You hang up hurriedly and attend to baby, crockery, etc. Meanwhile, the meal gets hurt. As if this were not enough to reduce you to tears, your husband arrives, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner.
¡¡¡¡ Things can go wrong on a big scale as a number of people recently discovered in Parramatta, a suburb of Sydney. During the rush hour one evening two cars collided and both drivers began to argue. The woman immediately behind the two cars happened to be a learner. She suddenly got into a panic and stopped her car. This made the driver following her brake hard. His wife was sitting beside him holding a large cake. As she was thrown forward, the cake went right through the windscreen and landed on the road. Seeing a cake flying through the air, a lorry-diver who was drawing up alongside the car, pulled up all of a sudden. The lorry was loaded with empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the vehicle and on to the road. This led to yet another angry argument. Meanwhile, the traffic piled up behind. It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meantime, the lorry-driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two stray dogs benefited from all this confusion, for they greedily devored what was left of the cake. It was just one of those days!
83.What would have most upset the woman the day everything went wrong for her?
¡¡A. She had not expected her husband to arrive so early.
¡¡B. The meal she had cooked for the three guests had got burnt.
¡¡C. Her husband had not told her he was bringing anyone to dinner.
¡¡D. She had not got enough crockery left to serve the meal with.

¡¡A. the lorry-driver blamed the owner of the cake for his accident
¡¡B. the traffic was extremely slow to get on the move again
¡¡C. the lorry-driver did not think he should be made to sweep up the glass
¡¡D. two dogs had devoured what was left of the cake

At times my heart cries out with longing to see all the things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.
If I were the president of a university I should establish a compulsory course in ¡°How to use Your Eyes¡±. The professor would try to show his pupils how they could add joy to their lives by really seeing what passes unnoticed before them.
If I were able to see, I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer wor1d to me. I should want not merely to see the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her
eyes that strengnth of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.
