A

A few years ago, we were sitting at dinner table one night. The whole family was there, my mother and father and I, and my three sisters, my younger brother, and also my elder brother Arnie. Arnie was there because he was AWOL (absent without leave from the Army). Arnie joined the Army when he was eighteen, on his birthday, just as soon as he could. They sent him to basic training right away and we didn’t see him for a couple of months. We didn’t hear much from him. He called once or twice, but he didn’t say much. He sent a couple of post cards. Everything seemed OK. Then one day he turned up home. He said they’d given him a leave for several weeks, and he just seemed to settle down again. One day he told me that he didn’t have a leave, that he was an AWOL. I didn’t know what to say. I told my mother and father, and they didn’t say much either. After a while, when nothing else happened, we just sort of forgot about it. We were happy Arnie was home. He was a great guy, always kidding around, but we were scared for him really. I could tell he was scared too, although he tried not to show it. He even got a job in a dry cleaner’s.
Then at supper that night with all of us there around the dinner table there was a knock on the door. Not a loud knock. It sounded like the lady downstairs when she wanted to borrow something. When my sister opened the door, two men in brown suits pushed her into the room saying “FBI.” They showed their badges(徽章) and walked right over to the table.
They looked at Arnie and said, “Your name Arnold Jones?” He said, “We’re just having supper, can’t you wait?” One of the men interrupted him and said, “Come along.” He took Arnie by the elbow, almost picked him out of his chair, and pushed him ahead of the two of them out the door. My father shouted, “Hey, wait a minute,” and got up but they were out before we knew it. There was nothing else we could do.
We got a letter from Arnie a few days later saying that they had him in jail. He said he wished he were home. When he got out of jail, he said, they were going to send him overseas, he didn’t know where.
56. The author of this passage is probably ____.
 A. English B. American C. Australian D. Indian
57. Which one of the following four statements about Arnie is NOT true?
A.In Arnie’s country, the lawful age for joining the army is 18.
B.Arnie liked to make jokes.
C.Arnie had at least one brother.
D.In my family, only “I” knew that Arnie was a AWOL.
58. The two men in brown suits ____.
A.came here to perform official duties.
B.came here to arrest my brother, who had changed his name into Arnold in the Army
C.came here for supper.
D.took Arnie away beyond all reason(毫无道理)
59. Which statement among the four gives a true description of what happened?
A.The arresting of Arnie took place in a very short period of time.
B.Arnie was very nervous when he was being arrested.
C.Arnie was sent overseas to be reformed through labor at the end of this story.
D.Arnie developed a good habit of writing home after that unpleasant experience.

On September 22, 1986, Jay Brunkella, a policeofficer in the Rogers Park district in Chicago, was shot during a drug arrest and died. Shortly afterwards, fellow officer Ken Knapcik, a 20year veteran (老警官)of the force, returned home after work to find a note from his 15yearold daughter on the dinning table.

Dad — This poem came directly from my heart. I love you so much! It scares and amazes me that you go out every day and risk everything to provide us with all that we have. I wrote this to express how much I love you and how much lost I’d be without you — Laura. P.S.: Hey, let’s be careful out there.

Titled "The Ultimate Cop", Laura’s poem was dedicated "To all the cops in the world who have daughters who love them with all their hearts. And especially to my dad." It was about a policeofficer’s daughter who sees on the night time news that her father has been shot. Part of poem: " Daddy, my Daddy, can you hear me cry? Oh, God, I need my Daddy, please don’t let him die."

Ken Knapcik stood alone as he read the poem. "It took me several minutes," he said. "I’d get through part of it and have to stop before I could go on. I was weeping. She had never told me she was scared." He took the poem to work the next day and showed it to his fellow officers. "I’ve never seen so many grown men cry. Some couldn’t finish it."

Knapcik keeps Laura’s poem in the pocket of his police jacket. He takes it with him every time he leaves the house for a new shift. "I don’t want to be out there without it," he said, "I’ll probably carry it with me forever."

60.Laura wrote the poem.________

 D. to tell officer Ken Knapcik how much she loved him

A.to treasure her daughter’s love and to value his own life

C.because he can’t go out without it

D.to mourn over the death of officer Jay Brunkella

63.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

 A. Poem for a cop

 B. An officer’s death

 C. Daughter’s love

 D. Love my job, love my daughter

The family is considered the primary agency of socialization. It is within the family that most children experience the first socialization influence and these influencing factors affect them for the rest of their lives. Families give children their geographical location, as easterners or westerners, for example, and their urban or rural background. The family also determines the child’s social class, race, religious background, and ethnic group. Each of these factors can have a deep influence on children forever. They may learn to speak a particular dialect, to prefer certain foods, and to pursue(追求) certain types of leisure activities.
Families also teach children values they will hold throughout life. Children frequently adopt their parents’ attitudes about the importance of education, work, patriotism, and religion. Even a child’s sense of worth is determined, at least in part, by the child’s parents.
One of the values built up in the children of most American families concerns(与…有关系) the worth of the unique individual. We are taught that we possess a set of talents, personality characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses peculiar to ourselves and that we are responsible for developing these qualities. This view of the value of the individual is not found in all cultures, however. Many people who emigrated(移民) from southern Europe, for example, believe that one’s primary responsibility is to the family, not to oneself. The son of a European farm family, for example, is expected to be loyal and obedient to the family, to work for its benefit, and eventually, to take over the management of the farm when the parents are old. In our culture, however, staying with the family is often regarded as a sign of weakness or lack of ambition. These beliefs are just two of the many values that people learn primarily through the family.
64. The family is very important to a child in that _____.
he learns most of the social values in the family.
his language is determined by the location of his family
his social background is determined by his parents.
the first socializing influence he experiences is from the family.
65. We can infer from this passage that _____.
A.American children pay no respect to their parents
B.the parents shape the child’ idea of values completely
C.all the families in the United States are interested in the worth of the unique individual
D.in a family of Chinese origin, children may speak Chinese even if they are living in America
66. If one was born in a farmer’s family in Germany, he is supposed to ____.
A.stay away from his parents
B.work whole-heartedly for his parents
C.live on his own
D.have no job in the city

(二)填空题

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern.

Lynette Long was once the headmistress of an elementary school. She said, "We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys fastened. I was constantly telling them to put them inside their shirts. There were so many keys. It never came to my mind what they meant. " Slowly, she learned they were house keys.

She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the impact(影响) working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being scared. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety.

The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall, under a bed or in a closet. The second is TV. They’ll often play it at high volume. It’s hard to get statistics(统计) on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone.

W: Really? Why?

M: Because the work is tiring and the people in that section aren’t friendly.

W: That’s too bad! I’m sorry to hear that. What do you plan to do?

M: Yes. Ms. Strong sent me your newest line of laptop computers with a description of other software products, but there wasn’t any information about aftersales service.

W: Oh, I’m sorry. Would you like me to fax that to you?

M: Yes. Could you try sending that information around 3∶30? That should give me time to look over the material before I call Ms Strong, say, around 5∶00.

W: Sure. Could I have your name, telephone number and fax number, please?

M: Yes. Jack Kordell and the phone number is 5601287. And the fax number is 5601288.

W: Nervous? Who? Me?

M: Now, sit down, please. I’m going to ask you a few questions. Then we’re going to have a short conversation in English. Do you understand?

W: Yes, of course I do. But may I ask you something first?

M: After the examination, please. Just pay attention to my questions for the moment. First of all, why are you learning English?

W: Why am I learning English?

M: Yes. I mean, what are you going to do with it? Are you going to be a teacher of English or what?

W: Please stop just a second. I really must ask you something first.

M: (Irritated) Very well, if you insist.

W: More and more young couples in China have come to like a western breakfast. They think it’s very convenient and good for their health.

M: Having western food for breakfast is good for one’s health. In England since most people begin working early in the afternoon, they often have fast food for lunch such as sandwiches, apple pies and beef noodles.

W: We often have lunch in a dining hall.

M: Do you have the habit of drinking afternoon tea with cakes?

W: No, we usually wait for dinner. It’s the biggest meal of the day. All the members of the family come home and sit together, enjoying dishes with cooked rice.

 ( Text 10)

People usually sing because they like music or because they feel happy. They express their happiness by singing. When a bird sings, however, its song usually means much more than that a bird is in a good feeling.Birds have many reasons for singing. They sing to give information.Their songs are their language.Love songs are sung by male birds. They sing when they want to attract a female bird.It is their way of saying that they are looking for a wife.Birds also sing to tell other birds to keep away.To a bird, his tree,or even a branch of tree is his home.He does not want strangers to come near his home.So he sings to warn them.If a bird can not sing well,he usually has some other means of giving important information. Some birds dance, spread out their tails,or make other signs. There is also a special kind of bird which builds a small garden of stones and flowers to attract a female bird.

Sample writing:
Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about a discussion we’ve had about whether students of Senior 3 should take physical exercise. 60% of the students think they should take exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing ping-pong ball, but it shouldn’t take up too much time. Exercise builds one’s body and reduces disease. Sports let their brains have a rest so that their revision will be more effective.
On the other hand, 41% believe taking exercise is a waste of time and tiring. After having sports, they are much too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. It’s also possible to be hurt in sports.

                        Your sincerely,
                       Han Mei
