New Zealand is an English-speaking country. But the government recognizes another language, too. This is the Maori language. English sailors began to visit New Zealand after 1770. They found the Maoris, a dark-skinned people, living there. They had come from the islands in the Pacific Ocean 400 years before the 14th century.

For a long time the British Government was not very interested in these far-away islands. It was made a British colony in 1840. In this year the first British people came to settle in the new country. More and more settlers came from Britain later.

The Maoris were friendly to the first settlers. But soon the new settlers wanted the Maoris’ land. So in 1844 there was a fighting between them. This was the first of several wars between the two peoples. The next fifty years was very bad for the Maoris. Many were killed in the wars. Many more died from new diseases brought by the British. In 1840 there were perhaps 200,000 Maoris. By 1896 this number had fallen to 42,000

For many years, the British new Zealanders looked down upon the Maoris. In this country the two peoples have lived in peace. Two scientists in California now think they can find out a person’s real age. Jeffrey Bada and Patricia Masters do chemical tests on teeth. When we are born the amino acids(氨基酸)in our teeth are in one form. Then, as we grow older, these amino acids change into a second form. Every year, one thousandth(1/1,000)of the amino acids change. So, by testing just one tooth and counting the number of amino acids in each form. Bada and Masters can work out a person’s age. They tested a tooth from the body of an Eskimo woman who died 1,000 years ago. Form the appearance of her body she was between 50 and 60 years old when she died. The tooth test put her age at 53. Then the Russian Government sent them a tooth from an old woman in Georgia. The tooth test said she was 99. Her real age was 96. The Russians are now hoping to send more teeth, from the very old people without birth certificates. But there are problems. Some of the centenarians(百岁老人)have lost all their teeth. The others want to keep their teeth until they drop out naturally. So the Russian Government and the American scientists have to wait and hope.

“My advice wants me to call him by his first name,” many foreign graduate students in the U.S. have said. ”I just can’t do it! It doesn’t seem right. I have to show my respect”

On the other hand, professors have said of foreign students, ”They keep bowing and saying ‘yes, sir, yes , sir.” I can hardly stand it! I wish they’d stop being so polite and just say what they have on their minds.”

Differing ideas about formality and respect frequently complicate relationships between American professors and students from abroad, especially Asian students(and most especially female Asian students). The professors generally prefer informal relationships(sometimes, but not always, including use of first names rather than of titles and family names)and a little knowledge of status differences. Many foreign students are used to more formal relationships and sometimes have difficulty bringing themselves to speak to their teachers at all, let alone address them by their given names.

The characteristics of student-teacher relationships on American campuses change somewhat, depending on whether the students involved are undergraduate or graduate students, and depending on the size and nature of the school. Graduate students typically have more student-teacher relationships are typically even less formal than they are at larger schools.

To say that student-teacher relationships are informal is to say that there are no recognized status differences between the two groups. But students may show their respect mainly in the vocabulary and tone of voice they use when speaking to teachers. Much of their behavior around teachers may seem to foreign students to be disrespectful. American students will eat in class, read newspapers and act quite informal postures. Teachers might not enjoy such behavior, but they bear it. Students, after all, are individuals who have the right for themselves how they are going to act.

It wasn’t just another computer. It was a marvelous(神奇的)machine, a whole room full of electronics that controlled all of its own devices, doors, locks, lights, and air conditioning. Jules was its creator and chief programmer. He taught it to play chess and programmed it so that it could never lose. He programmed its huge memory bank with millions of useful items and facts. It was surely the most intelligent computer in the world.

When it was about a year old, the computer remained Jules many times of facts he had long forgotten. It constantly corrected him on difficult problems. The computer got bored and recognized that it needed better input.

One day the computer flashed a light,” Give me a better programmer.” Suddenly, every other function of the computer turned itself off. Jules could not correct the problem. The computer just flashed, ”Give me a better programmer! ”over and over again.

Of course he was discouraged and disappointed, but he also felt hurt and insulted (侮辱的). His own creation was rejecting him as an inferior intellect(智力低下).Jules decided to go home to rest. He felt this message: ”Recover from this malfunction (故障) or I’ll destroy you”.

When Jules returned the next day, the light was still flashing, “Give me a better programmer.” He tried a simple command: ”Add four plus four. ”The computer didn’t answer. Angry and disappointed, he decided to call the demolition crew. The phone was dead. Jules reached for the emergency(紧急)switch. It didn’t work.

Now Jules began to get frightened so he decided to go to get the crew himself. He moved towards the door. The lights went out. Jules was furious( 狂怒)and he shouted at the computer. ”That won’t work. I know every inch of this room by heart.” He made his way to the door and got even angrier. It was locked. ’Open the door! ”he screamed, but the computer did nothing. In the dark room Jules could only see, ”Give me a better programmer…Give me a better programmer …”

All was dark and quiet. Jules realised that the computer shut off the air supply. He was slowly suffocating as it got more difficult to breaths. Then Jules remembered the power supply pipe. It ran through the wall to the outside. He crawled to it under the main console(控制台).With his shoe, he hammered out the SOS signal…The next morning some telephone linemen heard it. They called the police and fire department. The computer even interfered(干涉)with their rescue operations. It sent a high voltage(伏特数)electrical charge through the door.

They rescued Jules just in the nick(关键时刻)of time, He was revived(苏醒) with oxygen from a respirator(人工呼吸器). His physical state recovered better than his mental state. In his mind he knew that the machine had won.

Can you remember the first time you learned how to ride a bike or drive a car? Learning these skilled changed your life forever and opened up new horizons. Learning about computers can be like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you will never go back to the old days. The mew technology is simply too convenient and too powerful.

Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has allowed us to extend our capabilities(能力) . Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed---the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds.

Computers have saved organizations millions dollars. Furthermore, these same computer systems have opened up new opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected .The computer can multiply what we can do, and the return on investment(投资)is high. The growth of computer usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. Invasion of privacy, fraud(欺诈),and computer-related mistakes are just a few shocking examples.

The computer is like a double-edged sword. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can also cut deeply into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of the current technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through a knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the danger while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-Mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun---see a great movie, perhaps---and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away.

More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t eliminate(排除)any of the old ways.

At one time, I was convinced that real learning would be at hand if every child had a computer. I was convinced that computers would revolutionize education and hold immense(巨大的)possibilities for learning.

That possibility has not become a reality yet. Based on recent test results, far too many Californian children have not mastered the basic reading, math, and writing skills necessary to function at a minimal level in our society. And far too many children do not have the commitment(行为)to concentrate on learning to get a good education. These kids need good teachers, not fast computers.

No one will argue that computers have educational use. Unfortunately, in far too many instances, the classroom computer has replaced the television set as a game tool to occupy children. One wonders what is the use of an Internet feed to the classroom if the child does not read.

There are those who believe that bringing a computer to the classroom will supplement what teachers teach. That is difficult to comprehend since teachers are always telling us how many subjects and how little time they have to teach. When a child is occupied with a computer for any length of time, that child does not get the attention of teachers and the required learning that should occupy their class time

Educators are now looking into requiring teachers and students to become computer proficient(精通的). And districts that do not have enough dollars for textbooks are spending their meager

funds to buy computers and software, all in the name of technology and computer competency.

One would think that educators would come to the realization that computers are tools not much different from libraries, calculators, movie or slide projectors. Kids must still learn and be inspired to study basic skills, think, write, communicate, solve problems, and be good citizens.

And while it is good for students to make use of computers, we must not get carried away with faster and more powerful computers at the expense of basic skills, effective teaching and powerful learning.

Although Beethoven could sit down and make up music easily, his really great compositions didn’t come easily at all. They cost him a great deal of hard work. We know how often he rewrote and corrected his work because his notebooks are still kept in museums and libraries. He always found it hard to satisfy himself.

When he was 28, the worse difficulty of all came to him. He began to notice a strange humming in his ears. At first he paid little attention; but it grew worse, and at last he consulted doctors. They gave him the worse news any musician can hear; he was gradually going deaf. Beethoven was in despair; he was sure that he was going to die.

He went away to the country, to a place called Heiligenstadt, and from there he wrote a long farewell letter to his brothers. In this he told them how depressed and lonely his deafness had made him.” It was impossible for me to ask men to speak louder or shout, for I am deaf,: he wrote. “ How could I possibly admit an infirmity in the one sense( hearing) which should have been more perfect in me than in others---I must live like an exile.” He longed to die, and said to death,: “ Come when you will, I shall meet you bravely.”

In fact, Beethoven did something braver than dying. He gathered his courage and went o writing music, though he could hear what he wrote only more and more faintly. He wrote his best music, the music we remember him for, after he became deaf. The music he wrote was very different from any that had been composed before. Instead of the elegant and stately music that earlier musicians and had written for their wealthy listeners. Beethoven wrote stormy, exciting revolutionary music, which reminds us of his troubled and courageous life. He grew to admire courage more than anything, and he called one of his symphonies the “Eroica” or heroic symphony, “ to celebrate the memory of a great man.” Describing the dramatic opening notes of his famous Fifth Symphony, he said, “thus fate knocks on the door.”

In time Beethoven went completely deaf, so deaf that he could not hear even the stormiest parts of his exciting music. But in those years he wrote more gloriously than ever. He could “hear” his music with his mind , if not with his ears. His friends had to write down what they wanted to say to him. He was lonely and often unhappy, but in spite of this, he often wrote joyful music. In his last symphony, the Ninth, a choir sings a wonderful Hymn of joy. Because of his courage and determination to overcome his terrible disaster, his music has given joy and inspiration to millions of people.
