One cold morning in winter, when I was a little boy, a smiling man with an ax on his shoulder stopped me, saying: “My pretty boy, has your father a grindstone(砂轮)”

“Yes , sir,” said I .

“You are a fine little fellow!” said the man. “Will you let me grind(磨) my ax?”

Pleased with the flattery, I answered, “Oh, yes, sir. The grindstone is down in the shop.”

Patting me on my head, he said, “Will you get me some hot water?” I ran and brought the hot water.

“How old are you, and what is your name?” he asked without waiting for a reply, “I’m sure you are one of the finest boys I have ever seen. Will you turn the grindstone a few minutes for me?”

Hearing the flattery again, I went to work with a will. It was a new ax, and I worked hard until I was almost tired to death. The school bell rang, but I could not get away, because the ax was not half ground.

At last, however, it was sharpened. Then the man turned to me and said, “Now, you little rascal(小坏蛋),you’ve played truant(逃课)! Run to school, or you’ll be sorry! ”

“Alas!” thought I. “It was hard enough to turn a grindstone this old day, YC but now to be called a rascal is too much.”

In many ways, the earliest stages of photography are the most satisfying. Learning to handle the controls is easy and comes quickly, and you can measure the results in terms of sharp and correctly exposed picture. Once you have mastered that, you can start on the second stage of your photographic career. Applying these basic skills in a wide range of situations to the pictures you want, focusing on what you see through the viewfinder and turning that into the most effective picture becomes totally interesting.

All good photographs have one thing in common: there is no doubt what the subject of the picture is meant to be. Focus, CY exposure and composition all lead your eye to the same point, they all make the subject of the picture stand out. Every photographer must apply those same standards to his or her work, not only to the finished results but to the subject before he or she takes it. Always work out quite clearly what the subject of the picture is to be and why you are taking the picture. For example, “I am going to take a picture of this street to show the different styles and ages of the buildings and that people have been living, working and shopping in them since time began.” By doing this you have a better idea of what to include in the picture and what to leave out. How often have you been shown photographs taken by people away on a trip somewhere? The commentary is always similar, something about “the car park is out of the picture to the left”, or “you can’t quite see from this picture but if you go up the street”. The photographs are usually confusing collections of buildings, people, parked cars, possibly a distant glimpse of an ancient church, and best of all, a figure which you are told is Aunt Henrietta, disappearing in the middle distance. When photographers show you their pictures, they have a clear idea of what they want to bring to your attention, but it often does not appear in the picture. If they had given just a little of their time to think about their future commentary before taking the picture, then the picture would relate its own story. Good pictures communicate quickly and easily.

69.What does the author mean by saying “in many ways, the earliest stages of photography are the

    most satisfying”?

A.The skills of photography are not as satisfactory nowadays as before.

B.The earliest pictures were the best pictures people have ever taken.

C.The present-day photography depends more on technology than on art.

D.Learning to produce a sharp and correctly exposed picture is only the first step in

       photography and is easily learned.

70.What will it bring you if you decide the purpose of the photograph in advance?

A.Allows you to leave out unnecessary material.

B.Allows you to stand in the best place.

C.Helps you to vary the subjects of your pictures.

    D.Means you waste less time.

71.Many photographers fail because______.

A.their pictures include the buildings and people

B.the details are out of focus in their pictures

C.the subjects of their pictures are not obvious

D.the explanation given for their pictures is confusing

72.What book is this passage most likely taken from?

A.A book on photography for the expert.

B.A book on how to photograph people.

C.A book on choosing the right camera.

D.A book on improving photographic techniques.

“It was all his own idea,” says Pat Peters, the 38-year-old wife of Palo Alto, California high school football coach Bob Peters, 39. Bob had just drawn up a “motherhood contract (合同)” stating that for 70 days this summer he would take over the care and feeding of their four Children, plus all housework. Although he didn’t even know how to make coffee when he signed, he was quite sure that he could make it. (He thought the experience would make a good book.)

After 40 of the 70 days, he was ready to give up. “I was completely beaten down.” admits Peters. Three weeks later, he spoke to the local press (also part of the contract), stating, “Not only is motherhood a difficult task, not only is it never-ending, it is an impossible job for a normal human being.”

Bob and Pat were high school sweethearts. After they were married in 1980, she worked as a secretary to help put him through university. Since then Bob has been the football and wrestling coach at Palo Alto’s Cubberley High School while Pat raised the kids.

Then two years ago Pat went back to work as a secretary at Cubberley. “I had been around children so much,” she complains, “I couldn’t talk to a grown-up.” She continued to run the household, however, until Bob signed the contract, whereupon she decided to relax and enjoy it.

Although Peters has asked for help from his school’s home economics teachers and head of the cafeteria(食堂), his meals were sometimes a disaster. “I tried to slip the butter I’d forgotten under the eggs after they were frying”, he says. For the last three weeks, the family ate out a lot—sometimes having Macdonald’s hamburgers for lunch and dinner.

As for housekeeping, a home economics teacher had told Bob that a room always looks clean if the bed is made. “I found an easier way---I shut the doors,” he says. Soon the kids were wearing the same clothes for a week. “I made them wear their shirts inside out, and when we went to pick up Pat at work, they turned the right side out so they would look clean.”

Now that Bob has publicly admitted he was wrong, he is sharing the child-raising and housework with Pat. The title of his book about the summer is taken from something that he shouted at the kids one day.

73.The couple signed the contract because_____.

A.Pat complained a lot about doing the housework all by herself

B.Bob loved taking care of kids and wanted his wife to have a good rest

C.they agreed that husband and wife should share housework

D.Bob thought it’s easy to take care of the family and needed the experience for a book

74.What can we learn about Pat Peters?

    A.She was hardworking and selfless.

    B.She was pretty and kind-hearted.

C.She was tired of the child-raising and housework.

D.She did not love Bob any more.

75.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Bob tried to keep his children’s clothes clean.

B.Bob tried to cook good meals for his kids.

C.Bob frequently took his kids out to eat because he was too busy at work.

D.Bob helped his kids to make their beds clean and tidy.

76.Which of the following may be the title of Bob’s book about the summer?

A.My Experience of Being a Mother

B.I’m Proud of You All, My dear.

C.Wait till Your Mother Gets Home!

D.Motherhood: an Impossible Job for Anyone

When it comes to romance, women prefer someone who is humorous while men choose those who catch their eye, according to an international survey.

The survey, conducted in 16 countries by Canadian romance publisher Harlequin Enterprises, asked men and women on six continents about personality they liked or disliked and how they went about trying to meet Mr or Ms Right.

The survey showed differences between countries in the way people tried to impress the opposite sex.

Australians and British men frequently admitted drinking too much, while about half of German and Italian men said they had lied about their finances(未婚妻). Spaniards were the most likely to use sex to catch someone’s attention.

Eighty percent of Brazilian and Mexican men said they had lied about their marriage or romance as did 70 percent of German women, the survey said.

When it came to meeting that special someone, a majority of respondents preferred to rely on friends for introductions. The Internet was not a popular hunting ground except in Portugal, where about half the surveyed men and women would like to find people online.

There was a gap between the two sexes in Spain and France. Thirty percent of Spanish men, but no Spanish women, looked for love online. In France, 40 percent of men but only 10 percent of women attended parties, bars and clubs to meet someone, but they did have one thing in common: both sexes regarded looks as more important than their counterparts in other countries.

When it came to that first meeting, a majority of men surveyed said beauty was more important than brains, while women put a sense of humor at the top of their list.
