Smile,when making an introduction.

Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It's important to do so in a proper way,no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone,or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this,we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction.

◎Always stand when making an introduction.

When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up.By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person.

◎Always maintain eye contact while making an introduction.

Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact you are giving a confident image.

◎Always introduce a person of lesser authority to one of greater authority. The most important thing to remember is to say the most important person s name first

For example.when introducing your supervisor(上司)to a job interviewee, you would give your supervisor’s name first.“Bob Smith, may I introduce Susan Lee,who has just graduated from ABC University?”

◎In a situation where rank is unimportant,an introduction is based on sex and age.A man is presented to a woman and a younger woman to an older woman.

What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person’s name? Start with a handshake and reintroduce yourself.By doing this, you will usually cause the other person to do the same.

However.if the other person does not take your suggestion,it is OK simply to apologize and let the person know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation,of course, but it does happen to all of us.The other person should be forgiving.

Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it.Modem skill has changed this.Either man will end war,or war will end man.For the present,it is nuclear weapons(核武器)that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in stopping war.there would be no danger for us.To do this,we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way,not by contests of force,in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by talking in accordance with agreed roles of law.It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.

Some people hold completely false attitudes toward how to prevent war. In fact, they are willing to go to war in support of them. However, the movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world.but the attitude towards them is a better one than it was some years ago.It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict(冲突)nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the atom bomb.

56. From the first paragraph we can know that______.

A. we may face greater threat from weapons

B. chemical weapons are less dangerous than nuclear weapons

C. man’s idea of victory has changed

D. dangerous weapons are forbidden in modern society

57. According to the author,______.

A. it is impossible for man to live without war

B. the difference between East and West will lead to war

C. war must be stopped if man wants to survive

D. war will be stopped by modern skill

58. The author believes that the only way to stop War is to ________ __.

A. stop nuclear weapons

B. settle international problems through agreements

C. get rid of bacteriological and chemical weapons

D. let the stronger side take over the world

59. The last paragraph suggests that ________ ___.

A. nuclear war will certainly not take place

B. real agreements have been now reached

C. world opinion is still divided on nuclear war

D. man is beginning to realize nuclear War is his greatest enemy

60. Which of the following words can best describe the author's feeling in writing this passage?
