第三部分:阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分, 满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
It is physically impossible for a well-educated, intellectual, or brave man to make money the chief object of his thoughts; as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them. All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money — ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation of winning it ; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.
A good soldier, for example, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay — very properly so, and justly grumbles (抱怨) when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main notion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.
So of doctors. They like fees no doubt — ought to like them; yet if they are brave and well- educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They, on the whole, desire to cure the sick, and — if they are good doctors, and the choices were fairly put to them — would rather cure their patient and lose their fee than kill him and get it. And so with all other brave and rightly trained men; their work is first, their fee second, very important always, but still second.
But in every nation, there is a vast class of people who are cowardly, and more or less stupid. And with these people, just as certainly the fee is first and the work second, as with brave people the work is first and the fee second.
And this is no small distinction (区别). It is the whole distinction. It is the whole distinction in
a man. You can’t serve two masters ; you first with you, and your fee second, work is your master.
Observe, then, all wise work is mainly threefold in character. It is honest, useful, and cheerful. I hardly know anything more stranger than that you recognize honesty in play, and do not in work. In your lightest games you have always someone to see what you call “fair play ” . In boxing you must hit fair; in racing, start fair. Your watchword is fair play; your hatred, foul play. Did it ever strike you that you wanted another watchword also, fair work, and another hatred also, foul work?
56. What is the main object for a well educated, intellectual, or brave man?
A. Money. B. Healthy.
C. Something better than money. D. Food.
57. What does “very properly so” mean?
A. Very poor. B. Reasonable. C. Impossible. D. Very good.
58. If doctors are brave and well-educated, they should think .
A. their fee is first B. their patient is second
C. their work is first D. both fee and work are first
59. What do you learn from the passage?
A. All healthy-minded people like making money.
B. The fee is first and work second.
C. Work is something better than money.
D. Being soldiers and doctors, you will earn much money.

"Creativity is the key to a brighter future," say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.
Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. The fact a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.
Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can't recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.
It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.
63. The company where Drew once worked learnt from its mistake that ________.
A. they should encourage people to work a longer time
B. they should discourage people to think freely
C. they should ask people to spend all their work time developing new ideas
D. they should encourage people to spend some time considering and improving new ideas
64. Creativity is something
A. that people are born with B. that depends on intelligence
C. that is a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems
D. that is not important at all
65. Schools don't try to encourage creativity because ________.
A. they don't understand the importance of education
B. they don’t want their students to make mistakes
C. they pay too much attention to exam marks, language and mathematical skills
D. they think it more important to remember some information
66. Parents should when their children decide how to spend their money.
A. try to help them as much as possible B. take no notice of whatever they do
C. leave them as they are D. help them if their decision is wrong
D
Artificial (人造的) flowers are used for scientific as well as for decorative purposes. They are made from a variety of materials, such as wax and glass, so skillfully that they can scarcely be distinguished from natural flowers. In making such models, painstaking and artistry are called for, as well as thorough knowledge of plant structure. The collection of glass flowers in the Botanical Museum of Harvard University is the most famous in North America and is widely known throughout the scientific world. In all, there are several thousand models in colored glass, the work of two artist- naturalists, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolph.
The intention was to have the collection represent at least one member of each flower family native to the United States. Although it was never completed, it contains more than seven hundred species representing 164 families of flowering plants, a group of fruits showing the effect of fungus diseases, and thousands of flower parts and magnified details. Every detail of these is accurately reproduced in color and structure. The models are kept in locked cases as they are too valuable and fragile for classroom use.
67. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. An Extensive Collection of Glass Flowers B. The Lives of Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka
C. Flowers Native to the United States D. Material Used For Artificial Flowers
68. It can be inferred from the passage that the goal of Leopold and Rudolph was to ______.
A. create a botanical garden where only exotic flowers grew
B. do a thorough study of plant structure
C. make a copy of one member of each United States flower family
D. show that glass flowers are more realistic than wax ones
69. In line 10, the word "it" refers to which of the following?
A. The intention B. The collection C. One member D. Each flower family
70. Which of the following is NOT included in the display at the Botanical Museum of Harvard University?
A. Models of 164 families of flowering plants B. Magnified details of flower parts
C. Several species of natives birds D. A group of diseased fruits

Short people, studies have shown, are more likely to have a stroke(中风), suffer from high blood pressures and heart disease and be bullied in school.
Now, researchers report that short people—at least in the past—were also more likely to die at a younger age than their taller peers.
Their study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology(流行病学)and Community Health, found that short bones have something to do with short life for more than 1,000 years. The conclusion was based on 490 sets of adult skeletal(骨架的) remains from an archaeological(考古的)site in northeastern England, dating from the 9th century to about 1850.
About 55% of men and 73% of women died before the age of 45, and 39% of men and 56% of women died before age 30. The risk of death before age 30 declined as bone length increased.
“This study provides evidence from an archaeological sample that long bone length is connected with age at death—those with smaller bones tend to die younger,” according to Dr. D.J. Gunnell of the University of Bristol in the UK and colleagues.
While it is not clear why short stature(身材)might be linked to earlier death, the researchers point out that height is an indicator of childhood nutrition, which may have long-lasting effect on health.
“Mechanism(身体结构) for height-motality(死亡)associations in the past may differ from those today, for example, short stature may have increased the risk of death in childbirth and this may explain the higher risk of premature(未成熟的) mortality in women, ” Gunnel and collegues write.
“However, short bones, it would appear, have always been a marker of a short life,” the authors conclude.
71.The title of the passage should be .
A.Short people and their taller peers B.Short stature and short life
C.Men and women D.Long life and short life
72. “An indicator” in Paragraph 6 means .
A.a study B.a risk C.a marker D.an age
73.Which of the following statements is Not true according to the passage?
A.Most people were more likely to die at the age of 30 in the past.
B.Women were more likely to die at a young age.
C.Women with smaller bones were more likely to die younger.
D.People with smaller bones were more likely to die younger.
74.Short stature may be caused by .
A.high blood pressure B.heart disease
C.some illnesses D.less childhood nutrition
75. The topic in this passage is probably connected with .
A.space medicine B.social medicine
C.sports medicine D.industrial medicine

Once ,Tom didn’t go home until eleven o’clock at night. When he got home, he told his mother that he had been going over his lessons. Poor mom!She believed him and cooked two eggs for him. “Take more care of yourself as you work too hard, my dear son.” But Tom’s face turned red at his mother’s praise. Text 10
Many years ago a laborer sat down to rest on the sidewalk in a downtown area. He took off his hat, held it in his hand and started to sleep lightly. People walking by started dropping money into the hat. When he woke up he found in the hat more money than he had earned during the day as a laborer. He became a professional beggar and was then able to live comfortably.
This kind of giving encourages laziness and fails to help those who really need help. It is much better that these people enter their names in some organizations where they will be cared for and given work to gain their self - respect. ff we collect our contributions and give them to the organizations, we will help to get rid of the unnecessary beggars in our city.
