第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Over the past few years, people seem to have become tired of being told what they can’t eat. They also have taken too much advice that doesn’t seem effective. They want to hear messages about healthy food. They are understandably worried about some food industry practices and problems.
The food industry puts money-making first. Buyers and companies have been less informed on food safety than they should have been. The result is human cost has been high.
The food industry defends itself. It says it tries to provide as good a product as possible at low prices, as cost is a major consideration in buying food. It is the buyers who are to blame. They are waking up to the hidden costs of cheaper food. Chicken burgers, for example, may have only a little chicken in them.
The increasing organic(有机的)food market shows that people are prepared to pay more for fruits and vegetables that haven’t been grown purely(纯的)for its outside look and money business.
There is now a new kind of food called functional food. It contains so-called beneficial(有益的)additives, such as fruit drinks with added Vitamin C. It is believed that adding this makes a product healthier. In fact, this unnatural food will become a problem in the future.
If a mother-to-be wants to protect her unborn baby from illness, she needs to eat a special breakfast to which certain additives have been added. Yet she can get these things much more cheaply from other healthier foods, like orange juice or green vegetables. We shouldn’t be led to believe that we need to eat these “special,” expensive products to be healthy when most of the good things we need are found in cheaper natural foods.
I buy as much fresh organic food as possible. I believe that future studies will show that eating organically will make us healthier. I also enjoy them more and feel strongly like supporting the organic farmer’s cause.
56.According to the passage, many people are paying attention to_______.
A. what they should or should not eat
B. whether the food is harmful
C. which food product is new
D. who produces the food
57.In the opinion of the writer, adding extra things into the food ________.
A. is good for the baby B. makes food healthier
C. causes prices to go high D. may not be a wise way
58.What information is the passage trying to give people?
A. We should have special breakfast
B. Functional food gives good value
C. Natural food is better than anything else
D. We shouldn’t waste money on organic food
59.Because people are told less about the food they are eating they ________.
A. may choose to eat harmful things
B. talk less about the food than before
C. are hot supporting the farmers enough
D. need more advice from the food industry
B
It is sometimes said that the English are polite people. This can make life difficult for foreigners. Suppose a foreign boy asks an English girl to go out with him and she says. “If I finish my work. I’ll meet you in the café at 7 o’clock.” Is she saying “yes” or “no” to his invitation?
In grammatical terms, she is using the conditional structure. By using the conditional, speakers of English can avoid giving a “yes” or “no” answer to a question. It enables people to be diplomatic(圆滑的)If the girl doesn’t want to go out with the boy, she won’t turn up at the place she will let him understand she is still working. If she wants to go out with him, but doesn’t want to appear too easy to catch, she has achieved that with her reply. But in this case, as she uses the first conditional which shows probability, she is quite likely to turn up at the café. Being polite can make life very difficult.
The conditional is often used by people in the news-politicians, for example-who wish to avoid speaking out their ideas. This is very important if they are on their way to discuss an agreement. No one wants to give away his or her points before he or she starts. A government spokesman might say to a group of workers, “if we could pay you more, we would” The use of the conditional here makes room for argument although the speaker is using the second conditional form, which shows improbability. So it is unlikely the workers will get their rise.
“IP” is a small word, which appears often in the English language. It can show politeness and conditionals such as the First-probability-if I can come to your party, I will, the Second improbability—if I saw you tomorrow. I’d give you the book, and the Third—impossibility(meaning it is too late to change something that has happened)—if you had told me. I would have helped you.
60.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Language used in the news should make room to argue.
B. Usually English girls are not easy to communicate with
C. English people never speak out their ideas in public.
D. The word “if” can show different meanings.
61.The using of the conditional can make a speech________.
A. clearer B. quicker C. more polite D. more exciting
62.In the passage, the underlined sentence probably means“______”.
A. the workers will make more money
B. the spokesman doesn’t give any promise
C. the spokesman keeps his word
D. the workers’ problems aren’t difficult
63.This passage is mainly talking about__________.
A. the conditional in communication
B. how to invite a girl in Britain
C. British people and their life
D. Some language points in daily English

Not only farmers but scientists have studied weather forecasting. People, for many centuries and in all countries, have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasts. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water-vapor in the air, and therefore a rain will probably come.
When distant sounds(such as the noise from a train, birds singing, or people shouting) are very clearly heard, then wet and stormy weather is on the way.
Rings around the sun is a sign of coming rain. Many people feel the coming of wet weather in their bones Their joint(关节)aches. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly very near the ground if rainy weather or a storm is on the way. This as probably because the insects which they are hunting, fly low at that time. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sigh that the weather will clear up and become fine. Such rainbows come in the evening if the stars twinkle clearly at night, fine weather will come continue. If a mist appears in the early morning, just about sunrise, the day will be warm.
If the sunset is mostly red in color, the following day will be fine. When big cumulous clouds(积云)appear at sunset, the bad weather will follow the next day.
If circus clouds remain quite still, fine weather will come. If a rainbow appears in the morning, then rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made up by people who have used their eyes and their brains to forecast the weather.
64.Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, because______.
A. they like fine weather
B. hey can fly high when fine weather is coming
C. they fly high to catch insects
D. they feel very happy
65.In this passage “wet weather” means _____ weather.
A. cloudy B. rainy C. windy D. dry
66.If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, it shows that the weather will clear up and become fine. This because_________.
A. there is much water—vapor in the air
B. there is not much water vapor in the air
C. there is not any water-vapor in the air
D. there are all kinds of water-vapor in the air
