America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect(影响) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the aging of America has led to a very different society — one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为) is suitable(合适) at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, “I’m much younger than my mother — or my father — was at my age.” No one says “Act your age” any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

56.It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America _____.

A.    has made people feel younger

B.    has changed people’s social position

C.    has changed people’s understanding of age

D. has slowed down the country’s social development

57.The underlined word “one” refers to ________.

A. a society B. America C. a place D. population

58.“Act your age” means people should _______.

A. be active when they are old

B. do the right thing at the right age

C. show respect for their parents young or old

D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

59.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ________.

A. normal B. wonderful   C. unbelievable D. unreasonable

                     B

“Oh, Doctor,” she said, “I have only just telephoned you. You must have a very fast car. You have got here very quickly indeed. There has been a very bad accident (事故) in the road outside. I saw it through the window. I can sure the driver will need your help.”

60. Where was the doctor going in his car?

 A. We don’t know.            B. To a patient’s home.

 C. To a garage. D. To his own home.

61. The doctor went to the house because ________.

A.    he knew one of his patients lived there.

B.    he had received a call to go there.

C.    he wanted to use the telephone.

D. he was injured (受伤) and could walk no further.

62. Why did the woman patient telephone the doctor?

A.    She needed medical treatment.

B.    She believed somebody else needed a doctor.

C.    To ask how quickly the doctor could come.

D. To ask whether the doctor was coming on his regular visit.

63. How did the woman feel on opening the door and seeing the doctor?

A.    She had been expecting the doctor, but was surprised that he had come so quickly.

B.    She had not expected the doctor and wondered why he had come.

C.    She felt glad that the doctor was not hurt in the accident.

D. She was alarmed (惊慌) at seeing the doctor in a bad state after the accident.

64. Which of the following is the most likely reply the doctor gave the woman patient at the end of the story?

A.    “Yes, he does need help —— your help, not mine.”

B.    “Another accident? I’ve just had an accident myself!”

C.    “I got your call and rushed over. I hope I’m not too late.”

“Earthquake!” The word thudded in my brain. A roaring sound filled my ears. I tried to slide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the center of the room. I twisted my body and grabbed at the windowsill(窗台) behind me, somehow kicking free of my dancing chair. I tried to stand. My legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator(电动扶梯).

My fingers fumbled, grasped and held the windowsill tightly. Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animal. I looked behind me and tried to fix my eyes on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare. Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and desks. One girl was screaming. A boy was trying to claw his way across the floor to the door in a crazy overarm crawl.

My grip froze me to the windowsill.

I babbled aloud, “I’m going to die. I’m going die. Save me, I’m not ready to die, I’m not ready!”

I bent myself, climbed forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched fingers. I looked at the backs of my fingers and stupidly noticed the fragile(脆的) pale hairs growing out of the pores(毛孔). The fingers would some cease to exist. Somehow the impending(迫近) horror of my death was too terrible to even cry about.

Suddenly, I became aware that the rocking had ceased. Perhaps I wasn’t going to die.

C. the confusion in the classroom D. my fear of death

71. At the end of the passage there is a feeling of ________.

A. frightened B. excitement C. sorrow D. hope

E

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they do not trust their children to deal with difficulties, that they talk too much about certain problems--and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships.

I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.

Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or entertains or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyle irritate their parents, this gives them additional enjoyments. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.

Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they approve, it locks as if you are betraying(背叛、出卖) your own age group. But in that case, you're assuming that you are the underdog; you cannot win but at least you keep your honor. This is a passive way of locking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood when you were completely under your parents' control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself.

If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and practical abilities, so that they will give you the right to do what you want to do.

72. The first paragraph is mainly about _______.

A. the teenagers' criticism of their parents

B. the teenagers' ability to deal with crises

  C. the control of the parents over their children

  D. misunderstandings between teenagers and their parents

73. The underlined word "irritate" in the third paragraph means making their parents _______.

  A. angry      B. hopeless    . C. fit D. happy

74. Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles mainly because they _______.

  A. want to irritate their parents

  B. have no other way to enjoy themselves better

  C. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and taste

  D. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their own

75. To improve parent-child relationships, teenagers are advised to be___________.

  A. active      B. responsible C. cooperative D. independent

36、选B。be pleased“对……满意”,符合语境。另三项与后面的结果状语从句无关。

37、选A。

41、选A。从he was afraid可以推知。

44、选A。

50、选A。

从…he had escaped a painful death中可得到暗示。

从“No!”

As we all know, many middle school students smoke and there are a few reasons for it.

At present middle school students always have much to learn and many exams to pass, as a result, some students have to reduce their pressure by smoking. Some students learn to smoke only because they think smoking is modern and fashionable. Still some students try to attract others' attention by smoking.  To our surprise, some students can' t help following stars to smoke.

In my opinion, middle school students shouldn't smoke, on the one hand, smoking does great harm to our health and can even kill us coldly, on the other hand, smoking also costs us much money and affects our normal life. What' s worse, smoking can cause some students to do something against the law. I wish all the young smokers to stop smoking at once.
