In a moment of personal crisis, how much help can you expect from a New York taxi driver? I began studying this question and found the answers interesting.

One morning I got into three different taxis and announced: “Well, it’s my first day back in New York in seven years. I’ve been in prison.” Not a single driver replied, so I tried again. “Yeah, I shot a man in Reno.” I explained, hoping the driver would ask me why, so I could say casually, “Just to watch him die.” But nobody asked. The only response came from a Ghanaian driver: “Reno? That is in Nevada?”
Taxi drivers were uniformly sympathetic when I said I’d just been fired. “This is America,” a Haitian driver said. “One door is closed. Another is open.” He argued against my plan to burn down my boss’s house: “If you do something silly and they put you away, you can not look for another job.” A Pakistani driver even turned down a chance to profit from my loss of hope: he refused to take me to the middle of the George Washington Bridge, a $20 trip. “Why you want to go there? Go home and relax. Don’t worry. Take a new job.”

One very hot weekday in July, while wearing a red ski mask and holding a stuffed pillowcase with the word “BANK” on it, I tried hailing a taxi five times outside different banks. The driver picked me up every time. My ride with Guy-Caaude Thevenain, a Haitian driver, was typical fo the first-class help I received.

  “Is anyone following us?”

“No,” said the driver, looking in his rearview mirror at traffic and me.

“Let’s go across the park,” I said. “I just robbed the bank there. I got $25,000.”

  “$25,000?” he asked.

“Yeah, you think it was wrong to take it?”

“No, man. I work 8 hours and I don’t make almost $70. If I can do that, I do it too.”

As we approached 86th Lexington, I pointed to the Chemical Bank.

“Hey, there’s another bank,” I said, “Could you wait here a minute while I go inside?”

“No, I can’t wait. Pay me now.” His reluctance(不情愿) may have had something to do with money --- taxi drivers think the rate for waiting time is too low--- but I think he wanted me to learn that even a bank robber can’t expect unconditional support.

60. From the Ghanaian driver’s response, we can infer that ____.

A.    he was indifferent(漠不关心) to the killing.

B.    he was afraid of the author.

C.    he looked down upon the author.

D. he thought the author was crazy.

61. Why did the Pakistani driver refuse to take the author to the middle of the George Washington Bridge?

A.  Because he didn’t want to help the author get over his career crisis.

B.  Because he wanted to go home and relax.

C.  Because it was far away from his home.

D.  Because he suspected that the author was going to kill himself.

62. What is the author’s understanding of the driver’s reluctance “to wait outside the Chemical Bank”?

A.  The driver thought that the rate for waiting time was too low.

B.  The driver thought it wrong to support a taxi rider unconditionally.

C.  The driver was frightened and wanted to leave him as soon as possible.

D.  The driver wanted to go home and relax.

63. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.  How to make taxi riders comfortable.

B.  How to deal with taxi riders.

C.  The attitudes of taxi drivers towards the taxi riders having personal crisis.

D. The attitudes of taxi drivers towards violent criminal.

CHARLOTTE Hollins knows she faces a battle. The 23-year-old British farmer and her 21-year-old brother Ben are fighting to save the farm from developers that their father worked on since he was 14. While confident they will win, she lists farming’s many challenges.

“You don’t often get a day off. Supermarkets put a lot of pressure on farmers to keep prices down. With fewer people working on farms it can be isolating,” she said, “There is a high rate of suicide(自杀) and farming will never make you rich!”

Like others around the world, Charlotte’s generation generally leaves the land for cities.

Oliver Robinson, 25, grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. But he never considered staying on his father and grandfather’s land. “I’m sure dad hoped I’d stay,” he said. “I guess it’s a nice, straightforward life, but it doesn’t appeal. For young, ambitious people, farm life would be a hard world.”

For Robison, farming doesn’t offer much “in terms of money or lifestyle”. Hollins agrees that economics stops people from pursuing farming rewards: “providing for a vital human need, while working outdoors with nature”.

Farming is a big political issue in the UK. “Buy British” campaigns urge consumers not to buy cheaper imported foods. The 2001 foot and mouth crisis closed thousands of farms, stopped meat exports, and raised public consciousness of troubles in UK farming.

Well-known chef Famie Oliver’s 2005 campaign to get children eating healthily also highlighted(突出) the issue.

This national concern spells hope for farmers competing with powerful supermarkets. While most people buy food from the big supermarkets, hundreds of independent Farmers’ Markets are becoming popular.

“I started going to Farmers’ Markets in direct defiance(挑战) of the big supermarkets. I seriously objected to the super-sizing of everything--- what exactly do they put on our apples to make them so big and red? It’s terrible,” said Londoner Michaela Samson 31.

64. Hollins will agree with the following views EXCEPT that __________.

A. farming is necessary and basic for humans.

B. a farmer can not leave for a holiday frequently.

C. farmers can get close to nature when they are working.

D. for the young farm life is not attractive at all.

65. The underlined word “spell” means ________.

A. mean     B. weaken      C. deny D. support

66. The writer quotes Michaela Samson’s words in order to _______.

A. show why people leave lands for cities

B. show some people think supermarkets don’t sell goods of good quality

C. tell us more and more people are concerned about the trouble in UK farming

D. show more and more people support Farmers’ Markets

67. What does the text mainly tell us?

A. Farming is not so easy as it was.

B. Supermarkets make farmers leave their lands.

C. UK farmers fight big supermarkets.

D. Farmers in UK tries to save UK farming.

                    D

It’ a simple law of business: if an item is scarce and many people want it, the price goes up. It happens with certain kinds of toys during the holiday season. It happens with tickets to important sports events. But could you imagine it happening to the price of tulips(郁金香)?

Tulips weren’t always grown in Holland; the first bulbs were transported there from the Turkish Empire in 1593. But the botanist who brought them into the country was very mean with them, refusing to give them away or even sell them. People gradually got their hands on the bulbs, but they remained a rarity (稀有) that only the rich could afford.

Tulips were so bright and beautiful that many people desired them. And so the price kept increasing. The most popular tulips of all had alternating broken stripes of two different colors. These so-called bizarre patterns, which were actually caused by a tulip virus, meant that every single tulip had a unique look. So prized were such tulip that in 1624 certain varieties of them were selling for $1,500 a bulb! A short time later that price had gone up to $2,250.

Between 1634 and 1637 the market for bi-color tulips were out of control. Not only the rich but trade and craft people as well were crazily bidding up prices, sometimes paying for one bulb the equivalent (相同的) of what it would cost to feed and clothe a small town. In fact, the highest price ever recorded for a bulb was over $400,000.

And then, as you might expect, the market collapsed. Just as in the stock market crash of 1929, many people were financially ruined. But among the lamentations, despair, and suicides, the modest tulip continued to beautify the Dutch countryside.

68. The best title for this passage would be _________.

69. With “bizarre” tulips, people ________.

A. could not predict what a new bulb would look like.

B. often planted hundreds in their gardens.

C. handed the bulbs down to their grandchildren.

D. sometimes became ill from the virus themselves.

70. The author of this passage refers to the 1929 stock market crash in order to ______.

  A. make the tulip story sound more modern.

B. point out its similarity to the fall of the tulip market.

C. show that people from every century are greedy.

D. emphasize the value of good investments.

71. Lamentations means __________.

  A. uncertainty. B. songs of joy. C. buying. D. cries of sorrow.

Most people believe that music can train a person’s character, develop a person’s intelligence and comfort a person’s soul while a lot of them fail to be aware of its benefits to health. Nowadays, therapists(specialists who treat a particular type of illness or problems) say this is more factual than theoretical. That those who study music therapy can get PhDs is yet more scientific proof of its effect.

In North America, music therapists are often invited by doctors or nurses to bring music to hospitals. One of them is Mrs. Halde. She said that nearly every patient she meets reacts to music, and even those in coma respond with their hearts beating to the rhythm of the music.

The practice of music therapy in the West dates back to the Bibilcal era but the modern use of this therapy probably began in the 1950s, and a spokesman for the American Music Therapy Association.

During World War II, playing music for wounded soldiers was meant to distract them from pain. Doctors them found out that music did more than provide a diversion and alleviate pain.

They developed standardized procedures and guidelines for music therapy and the study of music therapy was continued to increase, he added. Now, “you can even obtain a PhD in music therapy,” he said.

The various music therapy techniques are all based on the theory that “rhythms have practical benefits to human body.”

For instance, when playing music for patients who are trying to regain their ability to walk, you can play music whose beat gradually gets faster, which probably helps patients walk again in the end.

72. According to the passage, the modern use of music therapy in the West has existed since ______ years ago.

C. Theoretically speaking, music provides only a diversion for patients.
D. The procedure of music therapy is not standardized yet.

74. The advantages of studying music therapy are many EXCEPT ______.
A. getting a PhD B. dancing well

C. helping patients      D. understanding the beats of music

75. The best title for the passage is ______.
A.  Music and Life B.  Obtaining a PhD in Music Therapy
C.  The Functions of Music Therapy D.  Rhythm is the Core Theory of Music Therapy

(Text 10) Dear John,

I’m very glad that you enjoyed your holiday with me. We enjoyed having you and your sister here. We heard that you will be able to come again next year. Perhaps you will be able to stay longer next time you come. A week is not really long enough, is it? If your school has five weeks’ holiday next year, perhaps you will be able to stay with us for two or three weeks.

We have long been back at school three weeks now. It feels like three months! I expect that you are both working very hard now that you are in Grade One. I shall have to work hard next year when I am in Grade One. Tom and Ann won’t be in Grade One until 2004.

They went for a picnic yesterday. But I didn’t go with them because I cut my foot and I can’t walk very well. They went to an island. Do you remember the island? That’ s where all five of us spent the day of our holiday.

                              Yours

                              Michael

I think the time at high school will be the busiest and most difficult in my career. There are so many subjects, and it is so important that we try to be good at all of them.I am looking forward to going to university.I hope to get a good knowledge of my favorite subjects.I’ll have to work hard to get the best results.

If I am lucky,I want to get the perfect job when I graduate from university.I hope the job can give me opportunities for on-the-job learning, which will be very important because there are many things you cannot learn from books.

The world around us is changing all the time.I think in the future we’ll have to take courses in our jobs to learn more skills. We’ll also have to study new things to create better opportunities to do our work well.
