I was a freshman in college when I met the Whites . They were completely different from my own family , yet I felt at home with them immediately . Jane White and I became friends at school , and her family welcomed me like a long-lost cousin .

In my family , it was always important to place blame when anything bad happened .

“Who did this ?” my mother would scream about a dirty kitchen .

“This is all your fault , Katharine,” my father would insist when the cat got out or the dishwasher broke .

From the time we were little , my sister , brothers and I told on each other . We set a place for blame at the dinner table .

But the Whites didn’t worry about who had done what . They picked up the pieces and moved on with their lives . The beauty of this was driven home to me the summer Jane died .

In July , the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New York . The two older sisters , Sarah and Jane , were college students , and the youngest , Amy , had recently turned sixteen . Proud of having a new driver’s license Amy showed off her license to everyone she met .

The big sisters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip , but when they reached less crowded areas , they let Amy take over . Somewhere in South Carolina , we pulled off the highway to eat . After lunch , Amy got behind the wheel . She came to a crossroads with a stop sign . Whether she was nervous or just didn’t see the sign no one would ever know , but Amy continued into the crossroads without stopping . the driver of a large truck , unable to stop in time , ran into our car .

Jane was killed immediately .

I was slightly injured . The most difficult thing that I’ve ever done was to call the Whites to tell them about the accident and that Jane had died . Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend , I knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child .

When Mr and Mrs White arrived at the hospital , they found their two daughters sharing a room . Sarah had a few cuts on the head ; Amy’s leg was broken . They hugged us all and cried tears of sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters . They wiped away the girls’ tears and made a few jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches (拐杖).

To both of their daughters , and especially to Amy , over and over they simply said , “We’re so glad that you’re alive .”

I was astonished . No blame . No accusations .

Later , I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had run a stop sign .

Mrs White said , “Jane’s gone , and we miss her terribly . Nothing we say or do will ever bring her back . But Amy has her whole life ahead of her . How can she lead a full and happy life if she feels we blame her for her sister’s death ?”

They were right . Amy graduated from the University of California and got married several years ago . She works as a teacher of learning-disabled students . She’s also a mother of two little girls of her own , the oldest named Jane.

C

A great majority of our nine million college students are in school not because they want to be or because they want to learn . They are there because it has become the thing to do or because college is a pleasant place to be in ; because it’s the only way they can get parents or tax-payers to support them without working at a job they don’t like ; because mothers want them to do so , or for which college is supposedly organized . Some of the professors and administrators estimate (估计) that no more than 25 per cent of their students are interested in classwork . For the rest , college is at best a social center or a place where time can be killed , and at worst a young people’s home or even a prison that keeps them out of the way of economic (经济的) life for a few more years .

I no longer accept the idea that college is the best place for all high school graduates . Just as the United States was the first nation to make great efforts to teach every small child to read and write ,so , during the 1950s , we became the first and the only great nation to offer higher education to all . During the 60’s we built great state university systems as fast as we could . And parents , employers ,high school teachers began to push the youth to get an education . By 1970 , colleges and universities were spending more than 30 billion dollars yearly . But still only half of our high-school graduates were going on .

Now the babies have graduated from college , the rate of growth of the student population has begun to increase . To keep their universities financially (财政地) supported many institutions have begun to attract students by using whatever means they can . They help in the development of features (特色) they think students want: creative (有创造力的) programs , an environment helpful to meaningful personal relationships , and an education so free that it doesn’t sound like college at all.

64.The reason for most U.S. college students to go to school is not that      .

A.mothers want them to go B.college is a pleasant place

C.they want to continue their education D.it’s the only way to get financial support

65.According to this passage , most of the college students      .

    A.do not like to study

B.like to make friends at college

C.find their universities as comfortable as their homes

D.complain that a college is like a prison

66.In order to get financial support , many institutions have begun to      .

    A.build universities bigger than before

B.spend more than 30 billion dollars yearly

C.make every effort to increase the student population

D.offer their students a large number of practical courses

67.The best title for this passage might be      .

    A.Crisis (危机)of US Universities B.U.S .Students Today

C.Why Do They Go to College ? D.Higher Education in the United States

To many visitors to a country the word “city” means the capital city , whether it’s Tokyo , Paris , New York , Mexico City or London . And that in its turn means what would be taken in by a group of tourists who had set out to see the sights . To many visitors to Britain , London is where it’s all going on . “The man who is tired of London is tired of life ,” Doctor Johnson said in 1750 . Or as an updated (更新的) version (版本) had it , London is where the action is . Well , that’s how it’s put down in the guide books anyway .

Of course to Londoners the word city means “the City” with a capital C, that square mile finally marked out and walled in by the Romans after they had set up their original camp by the Thames about 50 A. D. Some Londoners still live there , but as you look at the area today , you come up against the real story (and problem ) of many of the world’s capital cities growth and identity (身份) .

Most Londoners are not Londoners and do not live in the London they work in . Their home is in one of the many large villages that make up London as it began spilling over and pushing out in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries . They live either in the inner suburbs (郊区) of the Metropolitan area or the outer suburbs of the Greater London area . It’s all very expensive and overcrowded and yet more and more people are piling in and looking for a nest . For every one who finds it too expensive and moves out , at least three are waiting to move in .

Which brings in the identity problem ? Where does Britain really begin ? In London ? Well , does France begin in Paris ? Only a Parisian or a Londoner would make this claim and Londoners are scarcer than Parisians these days . What ! With nine million inhabitants (居民)? You might ask in astonishment . But what is meant by that is that these days in London if you’re in a roomful of people the chances of coming across a second-generation Londoner are about one in a hundred . And a third generation Londoner is something to make people’s eyes pop .

    A.was a tiring place B.was a most attractive place

C.didn’t interest tired people D.was an uninteresting place

70.The writer suggests that      .

A.the suburbs are really villages B.the suburbs are larger than villages

C.the suburbs are getting larger D.the suburbs are near some large villages

71.The passage suggests that few Londoners      .

A.have parents born in London B.know about Paris

C.were born in London D.have friends in Paris

When a ship sinks , the passengers and crew are left drifting (漂流) in lifeboats and many of them die from thirst or starvation before they are rescued . A French doctor . Alain Bombard , thought that people in such an unfortunate position did not need to die . He believed that they could drink a little sea-water each day and that by catching fish and other sea creatures they could obtain enough food to stay alive .

To prove his theory , he sailed by himself across the Atlantic Ocean in a small , inflated rubber boat , about fifteen feet long and six feet wide . The boat had a mast (船桅) and a sail but no motor , so he was at the mercy of the wind . The journey took sixty-five days and for all of this time he lived on fish and other sea creatures and drank sea-water and the juice of fishes .

The following passage is taken from his diary .

Sunday ,2nd November , will remain in my memory because I did a very stupid thing . For some days my health had not been too good . The change of food and the unchanging humidity (湿气) had caused a number of painful spots to form on my skin . I hoped to prevent them forming scabs by resting my weight on a little air cushion , the only one I had . Some unskillful movement must have knocked it overboard , a fact I only realized when I saw it floating a couple or hundred yards or so at the back part of the boat . I lowered the sail , put out the sea anchor (锚) and dived in to fetch it . I am a strong swimmer and reached the cushion in a few minutes . Imagine my great shock , when I turned round , to see the boat sailing off without me , too fast for me to be able to catch it . The sea anchor , normally shaped like a parachute (降落伞) , had become entangled (缠住)and was no longer stopping the drift . It was quite clear that I would become tired out long before I could overtake it . At that moment the boat very nearly continued the voyage without me .

When I was training to swim the English Channel in 1951 , in top physical condition , I once swam , for twenty-one hours . Weakened as I was I could not possibly have equaled the tolerance (耐久力). I deserted the cushion to its fate and concentrated on the fastest swim of my life . I managed to cut down the distance a little , but then had difficulty in even keeping it up . Suddenly I saw the boat slow down . I caught it up and just managed to raise myself on board .

The nurse smiled and said , “There’s a waiting room at the end of the hall .”

Sam was walking anxiously up and down in the passage at about midnight when the nurse came out of his wife’s room and said , with a happy smile, “Which would you have preferred , a boy or a girl ?

“A girl,” answered the husband . “I have an older sister , and she was always very kind to me when I was a child .”

“Well ,” said the nurse , “It’s a boy this time .”

“That’s all right,” answered Sam cheerfully , “That was my second choice .”

One possible version :

Dear Editor ,

I’m a middle school student named Li Hua . I’m writing to tell you something . Recently I’ve noticed that many of my schoolmates often go to the cyber café near our school . The other day , I went there , too . I was surprised to see many students playing computer games , seeing movies or chatting .Some students were even sending love letters online .

In my opinion , cyber cafes should be a place where we can find much useful information . Internet should be a window to the outside world rather than a place for playing games . Internet is good if we make good use of it . Otherwise , it will do us great harm . So the local government should take measures to make sure of the “safety” of students in cyber cafes .

Yours ,

Li Hua
