  Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with a great sense of pride as an American and with humility as a human being that I say to you today what no men have been privileged to say before. “We   36   on the moon,” but the footprints at Tranquility Base belong to 37   the crew of Apollo 11. They were put there by hundreds of thousands of people across the country, people in the   38 , industry and universities, the teams and crews that preceded us, all who tried hard throughout the years with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

Those footprints belong to the American people and   39 , the representatives, who accept it and 40   it ——the challenge of the moon. And, since we came in   41   for all mankind, those footprints belong also to all people of the world. The moon   42   impartially(不偏不倚地)on all those looking   43   from our spinning earth, so we do hope the benefits of space exploration will be spread equally with a harmonizing influence on all mankind.

Scientific exploration implies investigation on the   44 . The result can never be wholly expected. Charles Lindberg said, “Scientific accomplishment is a path, not a (n)   45 ; a path leading to and disappearing in mystery.”

Our steps in space have been a   46   of this country’s way of life, as we open our doors ad windows to the   47   to view our successes and failures and as we   48   with all nations our   49 . The Saturn, Columbia, and Eagle and the Extravehicular Mobility Unit have 50   to Neil, Mike and me that this nation can produce equipment of the highest quality and dependability. This should give all of us   51   and inspiration to overcome some of the more difficult problem here on earth. The Apollo lesson is that national goals can be met where there is strong enough   52   to do so.

The 53   step on the moon was a step toward our   54    planets and finally toward the stars. “A   55   step for a man,” was a statement of a fact, “a giant leap for mankind,” is a hope for future.

You have probably heard of treasures placed in the graves of ancient rules for use in the afterlife. But no grave site was more impressive than that of Chinese emperor Qin Shihuangdi. This monarch (君主) had an entire army buried with him.

Qin Shihuangdi, who ruled in the second century B. C, created the modern country of China. He unified seven independent states that had been warring for centuries. Then he built the Great Wall to keep invaders at bay. The systems of law, government, currency, and measurement that he established remained in place until well into the twentieth century.

When Qin’s grave was excavated in 1974, archaeologists found typical royal burial treasures. There was jewelry of gold, jade, and turquoise; there were rare ceramics and coins. But also in the gravesite was a remarkable collection of over 8, 000 full size statues of soldiers, horses, and chariots. This army, made of terra cotta (陶土), was lined up in battle formation.

It is not only the size of this clay army that is astonishing. The quality and variety of the sculptures is also impressive. Each soldier’s body was made of coils of rough clay and then coated with a finer grade of clay. The head and the hands were created separately. The result was that no two soldiers looked exactly alike. Among the many types of soldiers—all dressed in appropriate, brightly painted uniforms—were foot soldiers, armed chariot drivers, and archers.

Several hundred thousand laborers created Qin’s terra cotta army. Their work remained in place, protecting Qin’s remains if not his spirit, for over 2,000 years.

56. This passage is primarily concerned with ___________.

  A. Qin Shihuangdi’s life and times.

B. Qin Shihuangdi’s building of the Great Wall.

C. the terra cotta army in Qin Shihuangdi’s gravesite.

 D. the work of archaeologists in China

57. Qin probably had the army constructed ________.

  A. to war with his enemies. B. to protect him in the afterlife.

C. to protect the other treasures in the grave.

D. to provide jobs for his people.

58. The author of this passage develops the main idea by ________.

  A. presenting a biographical sketch of Qin Shihuangdi’s life.

B. discussing various ancient Chinese rulers.

C. describing the army found in the gravesite.

D. explaining how the army’s creators lived and worked.

Turning on the TV, a wonderful scene comes to your eyes---- a group of men, tall, strong and handsome. and women , young, beautiful and attractive, too. Together they eat in the finest restaurants, traveling everywhere around the world by luxurious planes and pleasure-ships. They are models.

Do you envy them? What sort of life are model leading? Is it a wonderful life for a young lady or a young man?

A few models are well-known actors or actresses who can make a big money only by showing themselves off in commercials. But the majority of them are just curious to see what it is like. They’d like to be modes just because they are attracted by what they imagine— Models earn a lot of money and lead a glorious life. This is true for those who are very successful. However, most models find it difficult to get work. Very few can earn enough to live on, and for all models their expenses are high . Their agents claim about 20% of the earnings, and no model will get very far without a clever agent. Besides, they have to buy good clothing. They also have to pay to travel to interviews and reach the places where the work is to be none.

Interviews for a model job are known as cattle-markets in the modelling world, and not without a good reason. A top model can choose her work, demand and receive high fees and have her expenses paid. But for most models, the situation is quite different. An agent or employer inspects each model much as a farmer inspects cattle at a market. Intelligence, qualifications and personal characteristics count for little against good looks and the tight figure. For all except the very few lucky ones, the life of a model is a continual search for work, trying to sell herself or himself in the face of fierce competition and, sometimes, not particularly moral standards on the part of some employers.

Immigration officials at airport look suspiciously at a girl whose passport shows her occupation as “Model”, and these are men and women of considerable experience of the world. It comes no surprise to find that some models prefer to put “Secretary” or “Businessman” as their jobs in their passports.

Modelling is a changeable world with great rewards for a tiny minority but not for the majority.

59 . For models, their looks and figures are_____ , compared with their good qualifications and intelligence.

    A. more important B. less needed

    C. less essential D. more looked down upon

60. Which of the following can lead you to believe according to the passage?

A. A model ‘s travelling expenses are usually paid by his employer.

B. To be a model ,good looks are the most important qualification.

C. Most models have a fairly easy way of life with high pay.

D. A model can hardly be successful without a good agent.

61. What may be the author’s attitude toward modelling?

A. It is a worthwhile life for a young lady or a young man.

B. He is in favour of young people to try modelling.

C. Before being crazy about a model job ,young people should be aware of the difficulties.

D. It is a field in which everyone has a great chance to succeed.

62 .The underlined word “suspiciously” can most probably be replaced by ________

A. dubtfully B. excitedly C .proudly D. sadly

C

Teach Your Child to Wonder

Children start out as natural scientists, instinctively (本能地) eager to investigate the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy, there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a career. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I like my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”

After a long pause, a boy raise his hand, “Have your ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get stomachache. Why?”

This began a series of questions that lasted nearly two hours.

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past three decades have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for a response, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children respond with more logical, complete and creative answers.

Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child engaged in a science discussion, don’t’ jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it that way before,” or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Never urge a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense, children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so he will be a smaller target for your disapproval (不赞成).

Lastly, show, don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can gain from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips (指尖) through a magnifying glass, and they’ll understand why your want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates(蒸发掉), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.

63. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, to simulate (激发) their interest, the important things for adults to do is ______.

  A. to let them see the world around.

B. to share their children’ curiosity.

C. to explain difficult phrases about science.

D. to supply their children with lab devices.

64. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word lists could best be replaced by __________.

  A. any questions. B. exercise items.

C. questions from textbooks. D. any number of questions.

65. According to the passage, the children can answer question in more logical, complete and creative way if adults __________.

  A. let them respond quickly.

B. wait for one or two seconds after a question.

C. tell them what to think.

D. wait at least for three seconds after a question.

66. In which of the following paragraph(s) does the author tell us what to say to encourage children in a science discussion?

  A. Second and third. B. Fifth.

C. Fifth and sixth. D. Seventh.

67. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children’s curiosity except that adults should _________.

  A. tell their children stories instead of reciting facts.

B. offer their children the chance to see things for themselves.

C. be patient enough when their children answer questions.

D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own.

D

An Unusual Experience at Sea

It was early one morning in February 1972 when Mayoral and his partner Santos Luis Perez set out to fish in Laguna San Ignacio. Hundreds of gray whales were swimming in the three-mile long, one-mile-wide inlet (小湾). This was usual between December and April, for the whales breed (生育) in the protected inlets of Baja, the final destination of their annual 6,000-mile migration from the Arctic. Mayoral and Perez stayed as far as possible from the spouting (喷涌) creatures, because the whales were said to smash (粉碎) boats with their powerful flukes (鲸尾的突叶). Mayoral, who had 16 year’s experience at sea, knew no one who had been close to a healthy gray whale and lived.

As Mayoral rowed to catch the outgoing (退出去的) tide, he saw, straight ahead, a whale approaching. Heart pounding, the 31-year-old turned the little wooden boat and pulled hard for shore. Try as he might, however, he could not row over the huge beast. In moments, it overtook them. Expecting the worst, the fishermen dropped to their knees and made the sign of the cross. The whale raised its nine-foot head out of the water and looked at them. Then, remarkably, it began to rub gently against the boat.

Sinking and resurfacing (重新露出水面) on opposite sides of the boat, the whale continued its gentle rubbing for almost an hour. At first the men prayed, frozen in fear. But gradually Mayoral’s terror gave way to curiosity. He was tempted (引诱的) to reach out and touch this oddly unthreatening monster, but a lifetime of caution (慎重) kept him still.

At last, having finished with whatever its purpose had been, the whale disappeared below the surface. Some time passed before either man spoke. Then they headed home. To his wife, Mayoral said only, “No fish today”.

But word spread through the group of small wooden houses near the salt-water lake. A strange thing had happened: one of the whales had tried to touch the men, and the men had returned unharmed. Why?

In nights to come, by faint kerosene lamps, Mayoral and Perez told the story. They and other fishermen struggled to understand. What did the whale want?

68. We know from the passage that the whales traveled 6,000 miles from the Arctic to the inlets of Baja __________.

  A. just to have a change in environment.

B. to give birth to baby whales in winter.

C. to escape from the cold water for a while.

D. to find a warm place to settle down.

69. What did the fishermen do when a whale approached them?

  A. They did nothing but kneel down and pray.

B. They rowed quickly to the shore.

C. They threw a cross to the whales.

D. They prepared to fight against the whale.

 70. On seeing the whale was an unthreatening creature, Mayoral forgot his fear and became curious, ____________.

   A. then he touched the whale. B. then he played with the whale.

C. yet he was still motionless. D. yet he continued his praying.

71. According to the passage, how did Mayoral react upon the event?

  A. He told the story to other fishermen as soon as he got home.

B. Unable to explain what had happened, he told no one at first.

C. He told his wife that he failed to catch a very big living fish.

D. He regretted that he did not manage to catch the living whale.

Adaptation of Living Things

Certain animals and plants develop characteristics (特性) that help them deal with their environment better than others of their kind. This natural biological process is called adaptation (适应性). Among the superior characteristics developed through adaptation are those that may help in getting food or shelter, in providing protection, and in producing and protecting the young. That results in the evolution of more and more organisms that are better fitted to their environments.

Each living things is adapted to its way of life in general way, but each is adapted especially to its own distinct class. A plant, for example, depends upon its roots to fix itself firmly and to absorb water and inorganic (无机的) chemicals. It depends upon its green leaves for using the sun’s energy to make food from inorganic chemicals. These are general adaptations, common to most plants. In addition, there are special adaptations that only certain kinds of plants have.

Many animals have adaptations that help them escape from their enemies. Some insects are hidden by their body color or shape, and many look like a leaf or a little branch. The coats of deer are colored to mix with the surroundings. Many animals have the ability to remain completely still when an enemy is near.

Organisms have a great variety of ways of adapting. They may adapt in their structure, function, and genetics (遗传素质); in their development and production of the young; and in other respects. An organism may create its own environment, as do warm-blooded mammals, which have the ability to adjust body heat exactly to maintain their ideal temperature despite changing weather. Usually adaptations are an advantage, but sometimes an organism is so well adapted to a particular environment that, if conditions change, it finds it difficult or impossible to readapt (再适应) to the new conditions.

72. Some plants and animals develop superior characteristics so that they may _________.

  A. help others of their kind get food, shelter and other things needed.

B. get into the biological process of adaptation.

C. become better adapted to the environments than others of their kind.

D. lead to the evolution and production of more and more organisms.

73. All of the following adaptations of living things are mentioned in the passage except that in their _________.

  A. structure. B. ways to develop the survival skills of the young

C. production of the young. D. working system of the body.

74. Which of the following statements about the warm-blooded mammals is true according to the text?

  A. They can change their environment.

B. They can adjust body heat to keep their ideal temperature.

C. They can make food from chemicals.

D. They get most of their heat from the environment.

75. The passage is mainly a discussion of __________.

  A. the adaptations of organisms to their environments.

B. the reasons why organisms have their particular shapes and colors.

C. the special way of life of each living thing.

D. the hows and whys of the structures of organisms.

W: Yes. That’s right, I do. It’s nice of you to ask, Bob. But I don’t think I can. Margaret has already asked me to see a friend, and then we’ll go t the theatre together. In fact she’s getting tickets this morning.

M: Oh, well, never mind. What about next weekend? The concert is still on then. I think, if you are free next Saturday.

W: Oh, I’d like to very much, but what time exactly?

M: It starts at seven thirty, I think.

   W: Sure, bye for now.

(Text 10) You ask me if I have been in a plane. Of course, I have. Now I tell you how I like it.

Last Monday I flew to Singapore. A fortnight ago I went to the office in Kuala Lumpur and bought my ticket. Then very early on Monday morning. I went to the office again with my luggage and got into the bus with the other passengers.

The bus took us to the airport. There people took our luggage and put it in the plane, and then, after about twenty minutes, we got in, too. I was a little afraid at first, because it was my first ride in a plane, but a kind air-hostess brought us some sweets and spoke to me, and soon I was quite happy again.

We flew through some clouds. They were very white, like cotton, wool, and beautiful. Then we began to come down because we were near Singapore. We went through the clouds and flew over Singapore. It was very interesting. When we got out of the plane, I said, “I like flying!”
