第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡将该项涂黑。

Nowadays, everyone tends to use EZ-link card for transportation.

Normally, when you get on board the bus, you flash your EZ-link card and move in and when you get down the bus, you flash your card again at the exit door ( located at the middle of the bus ). We all know that if we forget to flash the card, full fare will be deducted (扣除) from the card.

Below is something not known to public:

If you get off from the entrance door and you flash your card, the card will capture another entrance fare instead of exit fare, thus meaning that two full fares will be deducted from the card as no exit was being captured for the two entrances. For example, you board a crowded bus at Pasir Ris ( where it stops at Jurong East) and decided to get down ten stops later from the door you had entered. If you flash your card at the entrance door without informing the busdriver, a second entrance fare will be captured instead of exit fare thus you are paying two full fares ( 2 X $ 1.90 = $ 3.80 ) instead of one fare. This is useful information.

Here's the solution:

Go to the "big" machine (i.e. machine for you to top up the card) located at the MRT stations.

1) Insert your EZ-link card

2) Press the function key "Check card"

3) Press "more"

The above function will show you Information of the last 20 transactions (交易) on the screen. Please pass this e-mail to people you know so that they will not pay extra charges for nothing and burn a big hole in their pockets.

Last but not least, call the hotline: 1800 767 4333 when the incorrect fares are deducted.

56.If a passenger had flashed his EZ card twice in one bus ride and it later showed that he had paid twice as much as he actually should, it suggested that _____.

A. he got on the bus from the exit door

B. he got off from the front door twice

C. he got off from where he had got on

D. he flashed it twice at the entrance door

57.The author ask readers to pass on this e-mail to their friends to help them to____.

A. stay away from a loss of their pocket money

B. get free from their pockets being burnt on buses

C. avoid losing their money unnecessarily

D. know how to use an EZ card at the MRT station

58.The best title for the passage is most probably "________"

A. Helping Tips for Using an EZ Card

B. Don't Flash Your EZ Card Twice

C. Why You Pay Twice than Should

D.EZ Cards Steal Your Money

It was a few months before she was to graduate from Colgate University in 2004, but Lauren DiCioccio was not ready for the briefcase or the Brooks Brothers look.

Armed with a bachelor's degree in art and art history, she did what an increasing number of college graduates are doing: she bought a plane ticket to a country she had never visited, backpacked around the region, got a job in that country and then traveled some more.

According to one survey, 35,000 young Americans realize that working abroad, whether teaching, bartending, taking care of children, typing or picking grapes, has moved well. Far from being career suicide, it can actually provide a professional boost.

"When I went, I was hesitant because people looked at me and were surprised that I would graduate with a degree from Colgate and take time off to work and backpack around Australia," said Ms. DiCioccio, who picked grapes and was a short-order cook at a roadhouse in the outback. "So when I came back and had it on my resume (简历), I couldn't believe all of the interviews were about my time in Australia." "I ate bread and sausage, but I got experience working for a world-class brand that everybody recognizes. Cool, really, especially when I earned enough for my 30-day travel before going back home "she said. Working abroad "is a career move". "It's not a money-making move," she said. "It puts you in a position to promote yourself."

A. a good training B. working abroad C. a push ahead D. an experience

61. Which shows the correct order of Ms. DiCioccio's experience?

a. worked for a world-class brand

b. graduated from Colgate University

c. picked up grapes and worked as a short-order cook

d. bought a plane ticket for her destination country

e. traveled for 30 days before going back home

f. reached Australia

A. bdefca B. dfabce C. dbaecf           D. bdfcae

In the world today, an often-heard term is " team work", which is regarded as something utmost important for any companies, schools, businesses or whatever related to human work. So true is it that almost none would say anything against it once there are things, especially those we call hard nuts to be cracked that need to be done on a large scale.

Take, for example, a can-only-be-worked-out-by-at-least-8-people software program. No matter how talented any of the eight advanced software engineers is, he or she is only part of the team who cannot, for one thing or another, complete the whole program alone whatever efforts he/she makes or however diligent he/she is, for, a software program, often needed badly and calling for lots of time and extremely pains-taking efforts of a programmer, must be done within a limited period of time. Time, as everyone who keep in mind that this is a world of fierce competition knows, is money! Days', even minutes' delay would cause a business to lose thousands, even millions of dollars. From this point of view, the example tells everything ----- team work!

A recent survey done by WEIO, shortened form of the Working Efficiency Investigation Organization, of University of Detroit, shows that all over the world 95% of work needs team work in one way or another unless it is completely personal—say, brushing one's teeth. The organization concludes that team work stands for unity of a team and efficiency of human abilities. "Have you heard that ancient Chinese story of 'One Chopstick and Nine Chopsticks'?", says the director of WEIO smilingly," besides unity, it has a spirit of team work in it!"

62.The main idea of the passage is mostly that ______.

A. nothing can be done alone no matter when it is done

B. co-operation is needed most in our modern society

C. software programming is an example of team work

D. human ability is based on helping each other

63.The author mentioned the Chinese story of chopsticks to______?

A. support his own point of view

B. show how old "team work" is

C. tell us software programming is hard

D. show the Chinese is best at team work

64.What does the underlined part" hard nuts to be cracked" refer to here?

A. Fruit with hard shell.

B. Bad things to be turned down.

C. Very difficult problems to be solved.

D. Kind of software to be made.

65. What can we learn after reading the whole passage?

A. Team work is something very often mentioned in all companies.

B. Team work is a must to do a good job, a quality that everyone should have.

C. Team work can help you to find a very easy job with lots of money.

D. Team work means to make good use of one's time whoever one is.

SACRAMENTO (New York Times)----- The 2005 Best Ten Citizens of Charity have been honored today by the city government, one of whom is Ms Myrtle Smith. To answer our reporter's why-question, she told us the following story which, as she put it, had led her to the work for the less fortunate people:

"It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.

"Any old papers, lady?" asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say "no" until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.

''Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.  "

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.

The silence in the front room struck me. 1 looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, 'Lady, are you rich?"

"Am I rich? Mercy, no!"

I looked at my shabby slipcovers (家具套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, "Your cups match your saucers. "Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn't said "Thank you." They didn't need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job —— these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. And from then on I can't help doing more."

Ms Smith concluded her story with a very sweet smile that was worth millions of dollars, even an amount no one could figure out how large!

Sure enough, sometimes a very small matter counts much when it is big enough to change one's life a little and great enough to make one feel moved and eager to do things one has even never thought of, which oftentimes brings benefits.

66. Why did Ms Smith let the children in?

A. She did it out of great pity on them.

B. She had old papers to sell.

C. She knew them and wanted to make them a cup of cocoa.

D. She wanted to invite them to her Thanksgiving party.

67. The girl thought Ms Smith was rich perhaps in that _______.

A. she saw that the lady's room was comfortable

B. she saw the cups matched the saucers

C. the writer's slipcovers were very new

68. From the passage, we can infer that whether you are rich depends on____.

A. how much money you have had

B. how you feel about your life

C. how you have helped others

D. what job you are doing

69. Ms Smith left the muddy prints of small sandals on the floor for a while to____.

A. show her husband that someone had come

B. remind her that she had helped two children

C. show that she was a kind-hearted woman

D. remind herself how rich she was

70. The last two paragraphs imply that _______.

A. a famous person's smile is worth millions of dollars, or more

B. a meaningful small matter can bring about a great change in one's life

C. little children can change one's life style by paying him a visit

D. once a good deed is done, one could become well-known in a short time.

Making an advertisement for television often costs more than a movie. For example, a two-hour movie costs $ 6 million to make. A TV commercial can cost more than $ 6 000 a second. And that does not include cost of paying for air time. Which is more valuable, the program or the ad? In terms of money—and making money is what television is all about— the commercial is by far the more important.

Research, market testing, talent, time and money———all come together to make us want to buy a product. No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The sales of Charm went up once the ads began. TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product.

And the ads work because so much time and attention are given to them. Here are some rules of commercial ad making. If you want to get the low middle-class buyer, make sure the announcer has a tough, manly voice. Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell to upper-class audience, make sure that the house, the furniture, and the hair style are the types that the group identifies (认同) with. If you want the buyer feel superior to the character selling the product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself.

We laugh at commercials. We don't think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff.  It's big, big business. And it's telling us what to think, what we need, and what to buy. To put simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.

71. TV commercials are more important than other programs to television because____.

 A. they bring in great profits (利润)

B. they require a lot of money to make

C. they are not difficult to produce

D. they attract more viewers than other programs

72. The purpose of all the efforts made in turning out TV commercials is ____.

A. to persuade people to buy the product

B. to show how valuable the product is

C. to test the market value of the product

D. to make them as interesting as TV movies

73. From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can see that______.

A. the lower-middle-class buyer likes to work with his hand

B. the more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the product

C. ad designers attract different people with different skills

D. an upper-class buyer is only interested in houses and furniture

74.lt is believed by the writer that________.

A. few people like to watch TV commercials

B. TV commercials are a good guide to buyers

C. TV commercials often make people laugh

D. people do not think highly of TV commercials

75.What does the author actually mean in the last paragraph?

A. He asks TV viewers never to laugh at the TV commercial ads.

B. Commercials are used to show the true value of a product to be sold.

C. TV commercials cost much and they do influence us in one way or another.

D. Brainwashing must be introduced to sell something on TV.

good he does in his class, how scientifically 78.

he makes use of his own time ,and how hard 79.

that he works out of class. We have no more 80.

than one month and a half leave to get ready for 81.

2006 NMET. While English is my poor subject, 82.

I don't give up. On one hand, it is a subject 83.

in that we have to be examined. On the other hand, 84.

it's a tool of life, as my English teacher often told 85.

us " English makes you successful". I'll try harder

and I will never let you down, father.

Please remember me to mother,
