Until the doctor told me that I might go blind, the future spread before me in all directions. My paintings had been shown in New York galleries (艺术馆). I enjoyed the hours in my studio. But now everything was shadowed with fear.

One day, after I showed photos of my paintings to Ron, who was an eye doctor and sculptor (雕塑家), he asked me to go to his school and show slides of my work to his students with developmental disorders.

The next day, when I arrived at the school, I found one student was in the art room already waiting, a young man in a wheelchair. His head was held up by wires. His fingers were bent backward. When I came in, his eyes met mine. A burst of voltage (电压) passed from him to me. Two other students arrived, one of them wheeled in by Ron, who had invited me. This boy’s arms were lashed (捆紧) to his wheelchair.

“Tim is a professional artist,” Ron told the group, “and is here to share his ideas.” Ideas? Getting free of the limitations of the physical world —— that was the point of my paintings. Was I supposed to share this with people in the wheelchairs? Nervously I showed slides of my paintings. You make art to say something you can’t say with words, I explained. These paintings might be about being held down, and getting free.

After I showed the last slide, Ron said, “Maybe Tim will come and visit again. What do you say?” he asked me. I looked at the man with the wired head. When our eyes met, he nodded with a slight movement of his head.

The next few nights, I lay awake thinking about the million things these people could not do: climb a tree, hold a spoon, or turn the pages of a book. Yet there was that light in their eyes. What would they tell us if they had the power?

Then I called the school and reached the director of the arts program. “I was there a week ago, showing slides of my paintings in Ron’s class. I was wondering if I could come back.” “To help with the class?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “To start a new one.”

The science of meteorology is concerned with the study of the structure, state, and behavior of the atmosphere. The subject may be approached from several directions, but the scene cannot be fully approached from any one vantage point (有利的地位). Different views must be integrated (合并) to give perspective(合理判断)to the whole picture.

One may consider the condition of the atmosphere at a given moment and attempt to predict changes from that condition over a period of a few hours to a few days ahead. This approach is covered by the branch of the science called synoptic meteorology(天气学).

Synoptic meteorology is the scientific basis of the technique of weather forecasting by means of the preparation and analysis of weather maps and aerological diagram(高空气象图). The practical importance of the numerous applications of weather forecasting cannot be overestimated . In serving the needs of shipping, aviation (航空), agriculture, industry, and many other interests and fields of human activity with accurate weather warnings and professional forecast advice, great benefits are obtained in the form of the saving of human life and property and in economic advantages of various kinds. One important purpose of the science of meteorology is constantly to strive, through advanced study and research, to increase our knowledge of the atmosphere with the aim of improving the accuracy of weather forecasts.

The tools needed to advance our knowledge in this way are the disciplines of mathematics and physics applied to solve meteorological problems. The use of these tools forms that branch of the science called dynamic meteorology.

In previous generations, young people were under their parents' control; now the teenage children of the West's richest generation were ready for something to get excited about. The Beatles simply put a spark to a fuse (导火线) that was waiting to be lit.

Everything changed, and what changed for the Beatles was their lives and their working habits, in the midst of the hysterical (歇斯底里的) following the band attracted. Because of the demand of the fans to see them perform, they played biggest venues (meeting places), especially in America.

But John, Paul, George and Ringo became increasingly unhappy that, because of the screaming of their fans, neither the band nor the audience could hear the music. Creatively frustrated and tired of the pressures of life under siege (围攻) from their fans, they retired from playing concerts in 1966 and decided to concentrate on recording.

It was from this point that the brilliance of the Beatles really began to reveal itself: they would record over their career some 200 songs. Never before nor since has any recording and writing group even developed and yet remained the same in the way the Beatles did.

Their songs never lost their universal appeal thanks to the warmth and timelessness of their melodies and lyrics.

John and Paul were powerful singers with distinctive styles. It became apparent that, despite the fact that the songwriting credits were always equally attributed to them, Paul and John wrote and sang their own songs. George also contributed two or three of his own compositions to each of the Beatles eleven albums. Even Ringo wrote and sang the occasional song.

68. Which of the following is NOT true about the Beatles according to the passage?

  A. They made the young people of their time very excited.

  B. They attracted a large following wherever they played.

  C. They were always pleased with their popularity.

A. John and Paul were more talented and made greater contribution to the success of the band

B. John and Paul sang their won songs because they didn't like each other's style

C. George and Ringo never composed or sang their own songs

D. The Beatles maintained so much popularity with their works that no other recording or writing group could compare

70. It is implied in the third paragraph that _____________.

  A. the Beatles had no appetite for fame

  B. the audience were unhappy about the sound effect

  C. pop musicians get easily tired as they are under great pressures of life

  D. the screaming of the fans prevented the Beatles from performing happily and creatively

71. What can we learn about the Beatles' music?

  A. It was fine example of music for simple sing along songs.

  B. Its appeal was not limited to any particular time .

  C. It was simple in form but rich in meaning.

D. It reached a height which other pop music groups had never reached for their lyrics and melodies.

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.

If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …”, what follows that “but” can cause the apology ineffectiveness. “ I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.

Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I am sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow in the wrong for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again.

These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not adopt these pseudo-apologies as a means of achieving an aim.

But even when presented with examples of real deep regret for having done wrong, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that borrowing a parent's clothes without permission is not acceptable.

72. If a mother adds “but” to an apology,________.

A. she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized.

B. she does not realize that the child has been hurt

C. the child may find the apology easier to accept

D. the child may feel that he owes her an apology

73. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_____”

   A. You have good reason to get upset

B. I’m aware you’re upset, but I’m not to blame

C. I apologize for hurting your feelings

D. I’m in the wrong for making you upset

74. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry_____.

   A.  the complexities involved should be ignored

B.  their ages should be taken into account

C.  parents need to set them a good example

D. parents should be patient and tolerant

75. It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is _________.

   A. a social issue calling for immediate attention

B. not necessary among family members

C. a sign of social progress

D. not as simple as it seems
