You may have seen stars with tails and you may also know that they are called “comets” (彗星). In ancient China, people believed that comets were bad signs. However, scientists say comets may have been important to the start of life on the Earth. They have been trying for years to know more about comets.

Now NASA is going a step further. On July 4, NASA’s Deep Impact (深度撞击) spacecraft will attempt a brave meeting with the comet Tempel 1, which is flying through space at tens of thousands of kilometres per hour.

Scientists know comets are made of ice and dust but they want to know more about our solar system (太阳系). Deep inside, comets hold some important secrets about how our solar system was formed.

Previous observations of Tempel 1 taken with ground-based telescopes show the comet is dark and oblong (椭圆形), with a width of a few kilometres. It is a black comet about 14 by 4 kilometres, or about 8,000 football pitches.

NASA’s Michael A’Hearn, leader of the Deep Impact programme, says its aim is to find out what is inside the comet and how comets are made.

The Deep Impact spacecraft was sent up on January 12, 2005. On July 3, as it comes close to Tempel 1, the spacecraft will separate into two parts. The impactor (撞击器) will place itself in the path of the speeding snowball and will smash into it. This is supposed to make a small hole. The second part will travel around for a ringside view.

Besides, at least 30 telescopes around the world, including Hubble (哈勃望远镜), will be watching the dramatic impact. By studying the material blown out of the comet, this global network of telescopes will collect a list of the raw ingredients (原始成分) that went into making the planets in our solar system.

Beautifully cut grass, elegant white clothes, shouting fans and exciting matches make Wimbledon in London the home of tennis.

Last week the famous British tournament (比赛) at the All England Lawn Tennis Club opened, with almost 500,000 fans expected and players from 60 nations competing. Across the world 1.8 billion people are following the action on the television, radio and Internet.

A private club held the first Wimbledon championships as a relaxing party in 1877. Just 22 players took part, and no more than a few hundred spectators came to watch.

But these days the Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon is the third Grand Slam tournament played each year, preceded by (之前有) the Australian Open and the French Open, and followed by the United States Open.

Wimbledon is renowned (有名的,有声誉的) for its special rules and traditions. Players’ clothing, including shoes, must be almost entirely white.

In 2002, Anna Kournikova was forced to take off her black shorts and change into another pair on court. From 1988 to 1990, American legend Andre Agassi refused to play because of the all-white rule.

The United Kingdom’s unpredictable (无法预知的) summer weather is part of the tournament. If rain begins to fall, the players and fans have to wait patiently for it to stop before cheering as the covers come off the grass court.

Many British fans do not think the courts should have a roof, to keep with tradition.

Wimbledon is not just famous for great tennis matches. Fans like to eat strawberries and cream while watching. Every year 27,000 kilos of strawberries are consumed with 7,000 litres (升) of cream.

British people are very proud of the tournament, but the Wimbledon tournament has not been won by a British woman since 1977, and not by a British man for 70 years.

But disappointment has also become another Wimbledon tradition for loyal fans of British players.

41. From the passage we know that a British man hasn’t won Wimbledon since ____.

42. In the third paragraph, the bold word “spectators “ means ______.

A. inspectors B. selectors    C. audience D. competitors

43. How many competitions make up the Grand Slam tournament now?

A. Three.      B. Four.      C. More than four. D. It is not clear.

44. Which one is not included in Wimbledon’s special rules and traditions?

A. Players’ clothing, including shoes, must be almost entirely white.

B. The United Kingdom’s unpredictable summer weather is part of the tournament.

C. Many British fans think the courts should have a roof.

D. Fans like to eat strawberries and cream while watching.

45. For what reason does the writer say “disappointment has also become another Wimbledon tradition for loyal fans of British players”?

A. The first Wimbledon championship was held as a relaxing party and just 22 players took part.

B. American legend Andre Agassi refused to play because of the all-white rule.

C. Though British people are very proud of the tournament, Wimbledon tournament is not always held in Britain.

D. Wimbledon tournament has not been won by a British competitor for many years.

Everyone has experienced a twist of fate at some time. Actor Hu Ge is no different. In fact, his story is more amazing than most.

He stars in “The Chinese Love Story” (《仙剑奇侠传》), a TV series based on a popular computer game of the same title, which hits our screens in July.

The 22-year-old breathes life into main character Li Xiaoyao, and shows he is one of the most promising stars of this year.

But few people, including Hu himself, ever expected him to be an actor. Hu was once a shy boy, and rarely spoke. To help him become more sociable, his parents sent him to an art troupe (剧团).

“It was a hard time,” Hu said. “I always came last in the exercises. Until the teacher called my name, I seldom volunteered to perform. My grades were the lowest.”

At that time, Hu never thought he would have a career on stage or in front of the cameras.

But his sunny smile and experience with the art troupe gave him a chance to appear in an advertisement while he was in middle school. Instead of gaining confidence in acting, Hu became very interested in directing. As the national college entrance examination approached, Hu chose to study directing at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing.

Hu got a high mark and was given the registration(报到,注册)notice. During the holidays at home he accompanied his friends to an audition(试听,试演) at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. To encourage his friend, Hu performed and, surprisingly, he passed the exams.

Hu had to decide whether to be a director or an actor. He followed his dream and prepared to go to Beijing. But when the teacher told him many great directors had been actors, Hu hesitated.

He finally stayed in his hometown to study performing arts. He was given a chance to take the lead role in the TV drama “Dandelion” (《蒲公英》). “I was just 20, but I had to play the role of the father of a six-year-old kid,” Hu said. “I don’t think I did a great job. I began doubting whether my choice to be an actor was right.”

But he was right, of course. When playing Li Xiaoyao, Hu said he made great progress with his kung fu instructor. “I promised myself that I must try my best to get told off less every day,” Hu said. “Surprisingly, I found pleasure and satisfaction.”

46.What makes Hu Ge a success according to the story?

A. He is a lucky boy, and he found it easy to have a successful career.

B. He is a gifted boy, and he had no difficulty getting his successful career.

C. Several people in his family succeeded in the career, which influenced him.

D. He gets his successful career through his efforts.

47. According to the passage, which sentence is NOT true?

A. He wished to become an actor when he was a boy.

B. He had a hard time when he was studying with the art troupe.

C. He seldom volunteered to perform when he was at school age.

D. He got two registration notices from separate collages.

48. When did he become interested in directing?

A. When his parents sent him to the art troupe.

B. When he got a chance to perform and appeared in an advertisement.

C. When he got the registration notice from the Central Academy of Drama.

D. When he played a role in “The Chinese Love Story”.

49. When he had to make a decision whether to be a director or an actor, why did he hesitate?

A. He didn’t know which one he liked better.

B. He liked both of them, and he really didn’t know which one to choose.

C. He learned from the teacher that many great directors had been actors.

D. He really wanted to be a director but he had no confidence.

50. What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph.

A. He didn’t like to travel by plane every day.

B. He wanted to get more chances to play characters.

C. He was angry when some directors were not satisfied with his performance.

D. He made great efforts to improve his performing skills and avoid mistakes.

D

What’s your main reason for going to an amusement park? Nine out of ten people reply “to ride a roller coaster”, which is sometimes called the scream machine.

A roller coaster makes you feel like you are flying. When it rolls over sharp crests (顶部) one second you are looking at the sky and the next you are staring straight down at the ground. With higher and steeper (更加陡峭的) hills and larger drops and rolls, the faster the speed. It is one heart-stopping thrill after another!

Roller coasters keep breaking records. The tallest and fastest on earth, Kingda Ka, opened in the United States last month.

The “rocket coaster” begins with an amazing launch from zero to 206 kilometres per hour in just 3.5 seconds. It then sends riders straight into the sky at a 90-degree angle (角度), up to nearly 140 metres, or about 45 storeys.

The view from the top - if you had the chance to stop and have a look - would be impressive. But this is not an observation tower, it is a thrill ride! Kingda Ka does not wait to let you admire the view. Instead it immediately starts a terrifying 127-metre vertical freefall (垂直的降落).

The history of roller coasters shows our constant search for greater thrills. The first scream machines were not out-of-control trains, but wooden sleds (雪橇) on man-made ice-covered hills in the mid-1600s in Russia. Later, carriages travelled over hills on grooved (有凹槽的) tracks.

It was the French who added wheels to the slides. The world’s first roller coaster was built in France in 1817.

The roller coaster is a very complicated (复杂的) machine built only for fun. The ride is so exciting because of our basic fear of losing control. Once the cars start, you can do nothing but scream.

Turning fear into fun depends on illusion (错觉). No matter how dangerous a roller coaster may appear, it must be totally safe. “We always try to make them look and feel more dangerous than they really are,” says Michael Boodley, president of Great Coasters International.
51. The subject discussed in this passage is ____.

A. amusement parks B. roller coasters

C. fun activities D. wooden sledges

52. By saying “roller coasters keep breaking records”, the author means ____.

A. roller coasters are not good for records

B. roller coasters have a long history

C. roller coasters are going faster and faster

D. roller coasters are more and more expensive

53. The world’s first roller coaster came into being when ____.

A. Russians made sledges that could travel on ice

B. carriages that travelled on grooved tracks were made

C. the tallest and fastest roller coaster opened in the US

D. wheels were added to sledges to make them run faster

54. According to the passage, the roller coaster is popular because ____.

A. it doesn’t cost much to get a ride

B. it is complicated

C. it can make people feel out of control

D. it is totally safe

55. Which of the following would probably happen to roller coasters in the future?

A. They will be taller and run at a greater speed.

B. People will lose interest in them gradually.

C. They will become more and more dangerous.

D. They will become the most popular recreation.

作文参考答案:

Dear editor,

Some years ago, my hometown used to be a beautiful place. Thick trees and green grass could be seen all over the hills. As time went on, people destroyed almost the whole forest to grow more crops. To make matters worse, people let their cattle eat up the grass. So, you can only see wasteland instead of green forests now. As a result, when it rains, the soil is washed down the hills and into the rivers. Strong winds also blow away the valuable soil that lies on the top of the fields. I do hope all the people will take good care of the forests and plant more trees to improve our living conditions.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
