第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Lost in thought, he stared at the surface of his tea and felt the warmth from the cup in his cold hands.

A knock on the door frightened him. He stood up to answer it.

“Package for Todd R. Bartlett,” said a UPS delivery man pushing forward a notebook with his hand.

Todd signed his name and took the package in his tired arms, a frown crossing his face. Once the man left, he carefully opened his parcel.

First was a note, with handwriting he knew well and hated. It read, “Tamisha’s second grade photos… Your Father’s Day Present…”

Under the note was an envelope containing the photos. Todd held a picture up to the light and counted three missing teeth. Tamisha was his. She was not the daughter or rich Laura, The one who bought Tamisha toys, chocolates and a home in the country. Yes, his daughter, because he loved her more than anyone else in the world. Damn the judge who said he didn’t.

At the bottom of the package, Todd found the carelessly labeled “Father’s Day Present”.

It was a blue ashtray. Tears stung his eyes and he sat for a moment before reaching for the phone book. Without feeling, he lifted the phone and dialed the unfamiliar numbers.

“Blackstein residence, Tammy speaking,” answered a voice on the other end, the letters “S” whistling through the gap in her teeth.

“Hey baby, it’s Daddy. I just want to thank you for the beautiful present.” Todd looked at the ashtray in his hand. “Your mum sent me pictures of you. How big you’ve grown.” It was useless talk, good to be said, but only words to replace the hug he felt inside. “How is may baby doing?”

“Okay. Charles and I went to the beach. He showed me…” Todd listened, expecting every word with bittersweet sadness. At least someone was there for her, a father figure.

Suddenly the phone made a strange nose and a sharp voice came over. “You! I told you not to call her!” Laura shouted. “I want you out of my life. You…”

“But, Laura, I have a right to tell her I love her…”

the line went dead with a crash. Todd closed his eyes and lowered the receiver.

With his mind empty, or maybe full, he cleared the empty package off the table. A piece of paper fell onto the ground. Slowly, he bent and picked it up. It was a crayon picture(蜡笔画)—a girl and her father at a city playground. And the four magic words: I love you daddy.

56.Why was “he” frightened by the knock on the door?

A.Because he was hiding there from someone.

B.Because he didn’t wish to be seen by anyone.

C.Because he was examining the tea and the cup.

D.Because he hadn’t expected there would be a knock.

57.Who do you think is Laura in the passage?

    A.His former wife. B.His daughter.

C.His daughter’s new mother D.The judge he knew.

58.Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

    A. “He” still loved his daughter, whose name was Tamisha.

B.The daughter was probably no more than ten years old.

    C. “He” usually kept in touch with his daughter by telephone.

    D. “He” and Laura disliked each other.

Being a man has always been dangerous. There are about 105 males for every 100 females, but this ratio(比率)drops to near balance at the age of maturity(成熟期), and among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men. But this situation is being changed, Now, boy babies survive(幸存) almost as well as girls do. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess(过多)of boys in those years when they are searching for a mate. More important, another chance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby (especially a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost no difference. Since much of the difference is due to genes, one more agent(原动力) of evolution(进化)has gone.

There is another way to commit evolution suicide: stay alive, but have fewer children. Few people are as productive as in the past. Except in some particular areas, few women have 15 children. Nowadays the number of births, like the age of death, has become average. Most of us have the same number of children. Again, differences between people and the chance for natural selection to take advantage of it have become smaller.

For us, this means that evolution is over; the biology Utopia(乌托邦)has arrived. Strangely, it has involved little physical change. No other species fills so many places in nature. But in the past 100,000 years-even the past 100 years-our lives have been transformed but our bodies have not. We did not evolve, because machines and society did it for us. Darwin had a phrase to describe those ignorant of evolution: they “look at an organic being as a savage looks at a ship, as at something wholly beyond his comprehension.” No doubt we will remember a 20th century way of life beyond comprehension for its ugliness. But however surprised our children may be at how far from Utopia we were, they will look just like us.

59.What used to be the danger in being a man according to the first paragraph?

    A.A lack of mates.

    B.A fierce competition

    C.A lower survival rate.

    D.A poor gene.

60.The author argues that our bodies have stopped evolving because      .

A.life has been improved by technological advance

B.the number of female babies has been going down

C.our species has reached the highest stage of evolution

D.the difference between wealth and poverty is disappearing

61.What does the underlined word “productive” most probably mean in the second paragraph?

    A.useful B.producing babies C.well-educated D.caring

62.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Sex Ratio Changes in Human Evolution

    B.Ways of Continuing Man’s Evolution

    C.The Evolutionary Future of Nature

    D.Human Evolution Going Nowhere

Many people who are rich are also well known. Ted Sweeney was an exception to this rule. His family moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles when he was one month old. That’s where he grew up. At the age of seventeen he was hit by a train. Although he was not seriously hurt, the railway paid him $25,000. Instead of going to college, he bought a small store. Six months later, the government bought his land to build a new highway. He sold it for $95,000.

With this money he moved to Detroit. He started a small company that maid parts for car manufacture. It was very successful and by the time he was 23, he was a millionaire. When he was 24, he got married. He and his wife had three daughters in the next five years. By the time he was 30, he had over ten million dollars.

The tragedy struck. He was involved in a traffic accident. He did not die but his wife and daughters did. Six months later, he sold everything he owned and put his money in stocks. Ted then moved to new York. He lived for the next forty years in a one-room apartment.

He spent most of his days wandering through the city, looking for garbage cans for food. He never worked. He rarely talked to anyone except himself. Most people were afraid of him. His clothes were always old and dirty. Shortly before he died, he moved back to Los Angeles. After spending two weeks there, he was put in jail because he had no money and no job. City workers tried to help him. They offered him work, but he would not work. Towards the end, he would not talk to anyone at all. When he died, he was a lonely man. But someone remembered his name. They knew he had lived in Detroit. After his stocks were sold and all the taxes paid, there was still over a hundred million dollars left.

Some people would say that the Englishman’s home is no longer his castle, that it has become his workshop. This is partly because the average Englishman is eager to work with his own hands and partly because he feels, for one reason or another, that he must do for himself many household(家庭用品) for which, some years ago, he would have hired professional help. The main reason for this is a financial one. The high cost of labour has meant that builders’ and decorator’s(装修者) cost have reached a level which makes them prohibitive(抑制的)for English people of modest means. So, if they wish to keep their houses looking bright and smart, they have to deal with some of the repairs and decorating themselves. As a result, there has grown up in the post-war years what is sometimes referred to as the “do-it-yourself movement”.

The “do-it-yourself movement” began with home decorating but has since spread into a much wider field. Nowadays there seem to be very few things that can’t be made by the “do-it-yourself movement” method. A number of magazines and handbooks exist to show hopeful handymen of all ages just how easy it is to build anything from a coffee table to a fifteen-foot(4.5 meters) sailing boat. All you need, it seems, is hammer and a few nails. You follow the simple instructions step by step and, before you know where you are, the finished article stands before you, completely in every detail.

Unfortunately, it is not always quite as simple as it sounds! Many a budding(初露头角的) “do-it-yourself” has found to his cost that one can not learn a skilled craftsman’s(手工艺人)job overnight. How quickly one realizes, when doing it oneself, that a job which takes the skilled man an hour or so to complete takes the amateur(业余的) handyman five or six at least. And then there is the question of tools. The first thing the amateur learns is that he must have the right tools for the job. But tools cost money. There is also the wear and tear on the nerves. It is not surprising then that many people have come to the conclusion that the expense of paying professional(专业者)to do the work is, in the long run, more economical than “doing it oneself”.

68.Which of the following people can repair and decorate their own houses?

A.Skilled craftsman. B.Handymen of all ages.

    C.Hopeful men. D.Family supporters

69.The “do-it-yourself” movement comes from       .

    A.house repairing B.house building

    C.house decorating D.furniture building

70.Which of the following is false? Some Englishmen prefer hiring professional decorators, because      .

    A.they are wealthy

B.the craftsman’s job is not easy

    C.the tools are expensive

    D. “do-it-yourself” brings a lot of troubles

Dear Editor:

I’m a middle school student. I want to tell you how we students are burdened with heavy studies in my school.

Most teachers require us to come to school ten minutes earlier to begin our morning study. They force us to make it one of our class rules. It’s unfair! We are required not only to finish all the exercises in our textbooks but also to buy some extra exercise books, which take us much more time.

Therefore. we have little time for sports and other activities. Our eyesight is getting worse, and so is our health.

It seems that our teachers are helpless about all this although they themselves also complain about the situation, because their teaching, as well as the ability of the students is evaluated by no other means than our test marks. I worry about ourselves and about the future of our society.
