Whether we find a joke funny or not largely depends on where we have been brought up.The sense of humour is mysteriously(神秘地)connected with national characteristics.A Frenchman ,for instance, might find it hard to laugh at Russian joke.In the same way, a Russian might fail to see anything amusing in a joke which would make an Englishman laugh to tears.

Most funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a worldwide request. No matter where you live, you would find it difficult not to laugh at, say ,Charlie Chaplin’s early films. However, a new type of humour, which stems largely from America, has recently come into fashion. It is called “sick humour”.Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent (cause by force)death or serious accidents. Many people find this sort of joke distasteful. The following example of “sick humour” will enable you to judge for yourself.

A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on pestering(纠缠) his doctor tell him when he would be able to go home.He was afraid of having to spend Christmas in hospital .Though the doctor did his best, the patient’s recovery was slow.On Christmas day, however, the doctor consoled(安慰)him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough , on New Year’s Eve he was able to hobble(跛行) along to a party. To compensate(补偿)for his unpleasant experiences in hospital , the man drank a little more than what was good for him.In the process, he enjoyed himself and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.

56.Whether you find “sick humour” funny or not will depend on ________.

A.your having been brought up in America

B.the joke being related to a really comic situation

C.your ability to see the funny side of an unpleasant event

D.your ability to laugh until you cry

57.The man spent Christmas day feeling miserable because ________.

B.he was not able to be with his friends

C.being unable to walk, he did not enjoy the celebrations at the hospital

D.he thought he might also miss the New Year’s Eve celebration

58.The point of the joke taken to explain “sick humour” is that ________.

A.no sooner was the out of hospital than he had to go back in again.

B.the man should not have said how much he hated hospitals

C.the man would be unable to walk for the rest of his life

D.the man had not got a leg to stand on

59.What can you learn from this story ?

A.On New Year’s Eve, the man was able to walk properly to the party.

B.At the party , he enjoyed himself but only drank a little.

C.He had to go to hospital again though he hated it.

D.The man got well soon because the doctor took good care of him.

Do you think that daydreaming is a waste of time? Probably so.

“On the contrary,” says L.Giambra.an expert in psychology (心理学),“Daydreaming is quite necessary.Without it, the mind couldn't get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day… You can't possibly to all your thinking with a consciousness.Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time.Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues.”

Early psychology experts paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980' s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the Writer of the book DAYDREAMING.Klinger says, “We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures…Day dreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.”

Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be

hard to understand. It's easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine you sleep dreams carefully.Day dreams help you recognize the difficult situation in our life and find out a possible way of dealing with them.

Day dreams cannot be predicted. They move off in unexpected directions which may be

creative and full of ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy.

D.He hasn't formed his own idea yet.

61.Which of the following statements is true?

A.Daydreaming is less harmful than sleep dreaming

James Joyce was an Irish novelist who revolutionized the methods of depicting characters and developing a plot in modern fiction. His astonishing way of constructing a novel, his frank portrayal of human nature in his books, and his complete command of English have made him one of the outstanding influences on literature in the 20th Century. Many critics judge that he is second only to Shakespeare in his mastery of the English language.Joyce was deeply influenced by Ireland and wrote all his books about Dublin.

When he was in Dublin College, he studied languages and spent his spare time reading books. He refused to take part in the nationalist movement like his fellow students, but he became passionately interested in literature. He wrote outspoken articles of literary criticism that shocked his teachers and even taught himself Norwegian so that he could read Ibsen’s works in the original.

When he graduated in 1902, he knew he would become a writer and an exile, because he felt he could not be one without the other. In order to preserve his ideal of writing truthfully, fully, and as objectively as he knew how, about the people and places he knew best, he had to escape from all temptations to become involved in popular opinion or public life.He went to France, Italy and Switzerland, where he lived in poverty and obscurity for the first 20 years, only returning to Ireland when his mother was dying.Except for a couple of brief trips, he stayed abroad all his life.

    A.2. B.3. C.1. D.4.

67.Why did James Joyce stay abroad almost all his life?

A.Because he wanted to live in poverty and obscurity.

B.Because he wanted to write the people and places he knew best.

C.Because he wanted to escape from all temptations to become involved in popular opinion or public life.

D.Because he wanted to preserve his ideal of writing truthfully, fully and objectively about the people and the places he knew best.

Pronouncing a language is a skill.Every normal person is expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even moderately(适度地)proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general can’t speak foreign languages very much better than their native language is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce, and consequently never set about tackling(钉住)it in the right way.Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing foreign language is a skill—one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that can' t be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself.I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught: the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and, by his whole attitude to the subject, should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.

Apart from this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.

It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be obtained from books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the mechanics (力学) of speech, and of what we call general phonetic theory. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students.Unless the teacher has such a picture, comments he may make on his students’ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.

68.What does the writer actually say about pronouncing foreign languages?

A.Only a few people are really proficient.

B.No one is really an expert in the skill.

C.There aren't many people who are even fairly good.

D.There are many people who are even moderately proficient.

69.The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way is________.

A.an obvious cause of not grasping the problem correctly

B.a fundamental consequence of not speaking well

C.a consequence of not grasping the problem correctly

D.not an obvious cause of speaking poorly

70.By saying teachers should have “knowledge”, the author means teachers should________.

A.know about phonetic theory

B.realize the importance of speech

C.expand their knowledge about English

D.teach students knowledge as well as English

71.The value the student puts on correct speech habits depends upon________.

A.how closely he attends to the matter

B.whether it is English that is being taught

   C.his teacher's approach to pronunciation

D.the importance normally given to grammar and spelling

In Britain arrangements for inviting and entertaining guests at a wedding are usually the responsibility of the bride's family. In most cases it is mainly friends and relations of both families who are invited but when bride's father is a businessman of some kind, the wedding reception may provide a useful occasion for establishing social connections with clients or customers and other people whose goodwill may be of advantage to him.it is, however, the bride's mother who has the job of sending out the formal printed invitation cards.

In the case of a church wedding, the vicar of each parish(教区) in which the bride and bridegroom live is normally informed about a month in advance of the ceremony so that an announcement of the coming wedding can be made in church on each of three Sundays before it takes place.Anyone who may know of an existing marriage of either partner is ordered to give information, though this means of avoiding bigamy must have been more effective in the days when people attend the religious service and the bride usually wears the traditional long white dress and veil, while her bridesmaids, who are children, wear long dresses in attractive colors. This may also happen in the case of a civil wedding in a register office but is probably less usual.

The reception which follows may be held in a restaurant, a local hall or, when there are few guests, in the bride’s own home.Refreshments are provided, a special iced wedding-cake is cut(usually to the accompaniment of speeches)and distributed to the guests, toasts are drunk and dancing may follow. At some point in the celebrations, the bride goes off to change into everyday clothes and then leaves the party with her husband to go on their honeymoon, the journey they will make together, often in romantic surrounding abroad.

72.It is the bride's parents who normally have to________.

A.make all the arrangements for the wedding

B.provide hospitality for the people attending

C.decide who shall be invited

D.pay all expenses involved

73.What possible difference is suggested between a church and a civil wedding?

A.Civil weddings are less commonly followed by a reception.

B.It is less usual for guests to attend the civil wedding formalities.

C.Guests at civil weddings are less formally dressed.

D.There could be less attention paid at the latter to convention and picturesque effect.

74.The reception normally takes place in the bride’s home if________.

   A.this is a large one.

B.there is enough room to entertain the people invited.

C.the parents cannot afford to hire a hall.

D.there is to be no party afterwards.

75.The couple leave for their honeymoon________.

A.after the church or register office ceremony

B.immediately after the cake has been cut and the speeches made

C.at the end of the reception

D.as soon as the bride is ready

6—10 CCCBA 11—15 CACBA    16—20 ACBAA

本题有状语at that moment,反意疑问部分应说didn’he;如没有,可说hasn’t he.

He hurried up,hoping to get there on time.

23 D That depends视情况而定;Hold on,please别挂断;What for为什么;Sounds good听起来不错.

26B.“No sooner...than...” 、“Scarcely...before...”或“Hardly...when...”句型中,no sooner、hardly或scarcely位于句首,句子要使用倒装语序;同时,no sooner、hardly或scarcely所在的句子动词用过去完成时态,than、 when或 before所在的句子动词要用一般过去时态.

He has two daughters.They are doctors.(简单句)

He has two daughters and they are doctors.(并列句)

He has two daughters, who are doctors.(复合句)

Right as you may be, I can’t altogether agree.

详细解答:在so...that... 的结构用法与so...that... 如Little
does he be know about it,他对此几乎一无所知.

倍数+as+adj.(adv.)+as…;③…倍数+the size(height,length,width…)of+…,本题D项省略了money as I did.

35C 本题考查连词用法.she has finished her homework是not…until…

3540 DCBAA 41—45 BDBDD 4650 BAADB 51—55 CACDC

原文用in order to 来表明因果关系,因此to preserve his ideal of writing truthfully,

fully,……为原因,结果就是he had to escape from all temptations to become involved in popular

 opinion or public life,即移居国外.

70. A 推理题.

Internet Bars are popular today, especially among young people, for the net opens large windows to the outside world But when people spend too much of their time in these bars, there come problems. Some kids are so lost playing games in the bars that they forget the time not only to go to school but also to go back home, and their health is harmed. To avoid checks by the police, the managers sometimes shut the doors and close many people in the small room. When there is fire or other danger, people can not find a way out.I suggest Internet Bars be under strict supervision and young kids be guided to surf the Internet.Only in this way can Internet be well used by people.

W: Yes’s a small group of only fifteen girls and boys. But nobody has been late for the practice.

M: I see.How many songs can you sing now?

W: We started only three months ago, but we’ve practiced eight songs.

M: Are you going to perform any time?

W: Yes, there will be a school shoe next month and we are going to sing a song in it.We are practicing a new song now. It’s written by one of the singers in our group.

M: Really? What’s the name of the song?

W: Sunny Days.

M: That’s a nice name.I hope to listen to it soon. Can I visit you when you practice?

W: Excuse me, but I think I have lost my way.

M: Hmm, let’s see.Where are you going?

W: I am going to meet my friend at the cinema.

M: Which cinema are you going to? There are two cinemas nearby.

W: Oh, I forgot the name. What shall I do now?

M: Take it easy.Let’s see.Tell me how you’ve got here first.

W: I got off Fifteenth Street and walked all the way here.My friend told me the cinema is near Fifteenth Street. She said it’s somewhere in a back street behind the City Library.

M: But there’s no library in this part of the city.

W: Oh, sorry, I meant a bookstore.

M: Bookstore? It must be the Thompson Bookstore. It’s just across the street from here.Look, it’s over there. And there is a cinema behind it, the West Town Cinema.

W: Me too.Are you going somewhere in the summer? I am going to the beach for at least one week.

M: Really? I am also going to the beach for some time.My dad told me that he would take one week off and take the whole family there.

W: I am going with my friends, Sarah, Jill, Susan and Catherine. So, when are you going?

M: My dad said he would be free next week. Before that, I will stay home and help Mum with some housework. How about you?

W: What kind of film do you like, John?

M: I like action films.

W: Hmm, I like them too.So what do you like about action films?

M: For me, action films are a way to let out my feeling.

W: What kind of feelings?

M: A feeling that you are unable to do something that you really want to do.For example, I want to be very strong and be able to break a door in one kick.

W: Are you telling me that you have a liking for force?

M: Not exactly.I would rather call it a liking for strength and power.

W: Hmm, that sounds safer to me.

M: Now why do you like action films? I don’t quite believe that girls like you will care for action films.

W: But I do, because action films give me a sense of life.So whenever I feel lost in my life, I’ll watch an action film. And I feel it will bring me back to a life with meaning.

M: That’s really a special idea.

M: Susan, can you help me make a decision?

W: What kind of decision is that?

M: You see, I am going to take a two-week holiday next January, and I wonder if I should go to Spain or Switzerland.

W: Hmm, that is a difficult decision. Both are great places. So, let’s see what you want to do them.Do you like snow?

M: Yes, very much, and that’s why I am thinking of going to such a place as Switzerland.

W: Right then, do you want to get away from the cold weather here?

M: That’s also my with, so I also think of going to Southern Spain.I sound very strange, don’t I? I like to play in the snow, but then I don’t want the cold weather.

W: That’s why you find it difficult to decide, as you have enough reason to go to either place.Well, let’s come to this basic question then. Why do you take a holiday? To kill time, to have some enjoyment or what?

M: Well, I think I need a rest after several months’ hard work.

W: That’s easy then.If I were you, I would go to the seaside place in Spain.I wouldn’t go to a cold place for a rest.Think of the warm sunshine and the beach and sand. What a fine place a rest! And think of going to sleep to the sound of the waves…

M: You’ve talked me into it.Thank you for helping me make the decision.

W: It’s OK.
